Cards over .500s in 3.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Sunday, 2 October 2005 21:20 (twenty years ago)

Cards in 4. Peavy will outduel Carpenter and then it's Murderer's Row bye bye.

gygax! (gygax!), Sunday, 2 October 2005 22:19 (twenty years ago)

Cards in 4.

Cards in 4. Peavy will win one.

boldbury (boldbury), Monday, 3 October 2005 01:24 (twenty years ago)

padres in 5!!!!!!

(i'm trying to be bold here. but also the cards' pitchers have been hitting some bumpy spots of late, and carpenter's last few starts have not been so good at all)

maura (maura), Monday, 3 October 2005 02:02 (twenty years ago)

Robert Fick's quote about only having to play a game over .500 during the playoffs to win it all was pretty funny, but I figure this will become one of those blink and it was over playoff series. An upset could happen, but I don't think it will.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Monday, 3 October 2005 02:55 (twenty years ago)

I'm going to say Padres in 5 but mostly because I have to.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Monday, 3 October 2005 03:12 (twenty years ago)

Don't forget Woody Williams. He's given up two runs or less in six of his last seven starts -- the exception being a terrible outing at Coors Field.

Go the Padres~!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 3 October 2005 04:16 (twenty years ago)

Woody Williams might not even get a chance to start. He's slated for Game 5.

Peavy, Astacio, Eaton, Peavy, Williams.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Monday, 3 October 2005 04:32 (twenty years ago)

Go Padres! I'll say 5, like I know.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 3 October 2005 12:30 (twenty years ago)

HOLY CRAP PEDRO ASTACIO!!! Dude's allowed two runs or less in every start he's had (seven!) since August 6th. And that's both home & road - he pitched @ Washington (OK, big whoop), Atlanta (pretty damn good?), & Arizona (hmm).

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 3 October 2005 13:06 (twenty years ago)

What the hell? Aside from Giles (and Dave Roberts??!!), the Padres' road hitting stats make them look like a bunch of Joe Carters (i.e. no walk, much pop). Except for Klesko, who's just a waste wherever he is. Nice to see Joe Randa suck ass @ 3B and STILL come out ahead of the guy he replaced. If the Pads can somehow get Ramon Hernandez & Miguel Olivo in the lineup @ the same time (assuming MO continues taking his B12 shots), and Mark Sweeney replaces Klesko, the Pads MIGHT score runs.

And that's assuming the Cardinal pitchers suck the supposed ass they've been sucking post-clinch. Please note: the 241.2 IP turned in by Chris Carpenter is a career-high; the last time he totaled that many innings, he sucked ass the following year and went on the DL for 18 months. Fox & Soup have been solid, tho, and Marquis' September has been ridiculous - I'm guessing / hoping Matty Mo is gonna be sitting in the bullpen? (FWIW, the Pads seemingly have the edge in the pen, assuming they avoid Otsuka. And Dennys Reyes - 43.2 IP w/ a .315 BAA ain't the stuff.)

Barring a starter collapse (which is most probably w/ either JM or CC), I can only see the Pads doing damage if Ray King or Julian Tavares screw the pooch in key situations. And barring the Cards reliving the awesome hitting clinic they put on after Game 1 of last year's Series, they shd score enough runs to win games. That said, I can see Peavy (1 start against STL this year, 8 IP, 1 R, 2 H, 10 K, 0 BB) (yes, at Petco, shut up) winning his 2 starts. And then the Cards gut out 1 win while trouncing the Pads in the other 2 games. As much as I'd love to see TLR bounced out of the playoffs, I don't see it happening in this round.

In conclusion: David Eckstein gets the red carpet treatment; goofs on the NL West abound; Jake Peavy is Mr. No Respect; Mark Sweeney goes gonzo; Chris Carpenter gets shelled; Pedro Astacio gets shelled; Cards in 5.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 3 October 2005 14:37 (twenty years ago)

Spartacus says Cards in 4

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Monday, 3 October 2005 14:44 (twenty years ago)

Olney likes the Padres in round 1!

Division Series: Boston beats the White Sox, 3 games to 2; Angels beat the Yankees, 3 games to 1; Houston over Atlanta, 3 games to 2; Padres over St. Louis, 3 games to 2.

Championship Series: Angels over Boston in six games, Houston over San Diego in five games.

World Series: The Angels over the Astros in six games. The Most Valuable Player: John Lackey.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Monday, 3 October 2005 16:38 (twenty years ago)

Al Reyes (STL set-up stud) is out for a year after tearing an elbow ligament while striking out the side in the regular season finale.

This is the Fuct By TV series -- first 3 games Tues / Thurs / Sat!

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 12:15 (twenty years ago)

Sheehan of BP:

Peavy is the real thing, and I suspect Carpenter's recent struggles stem from an empty tank and not something temporary. The schedule forces the Cards to deal with Peavy twice on full rest, the second time at Petco Park. As much as I appreciate the Cardinals' talent and performance, this is the Colon Theory redux, but with a better pitcher and an extra day's rest.

America, Jake Peavy is ready for his close-up. Padres in four.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 13:56 (twenty years ago)

I played hooky today to watch this.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 14:37 (twenty years ago)

A lot of folks are ignoring that less than one month ago Peavy was pulled from a game and ended up skipping his next start due to shoulder pain. This does not bode well for a pitcher who's already been on the DL 3x since June and has thrown a career high in innings pitched.

I'll give him one postseason gem and then it's back to the icepacks.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 15:16 (twenty years ago)

1-0 STL -- Edmonds homer.

Carpenter had to work hard in the first.

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 16:24 (twenty years ago)

Yep, Carpenter's curveball isn't looking good.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 16:24 (twenty years ago)

two on none out for the cards -- eckstein error + blown call at first

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 16:32 (twenty years ago)

The Cards love the blown calls (1985).

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 16:35 (twenty years ago)

THIRTY FIVE PITCHES thru 2 for CC! Also: Peavy's thrown 17 strikes against 2 balls.

It's over.

Jimmy Mod wants you to tighten the strings on your corset (The Famous Jimmy Mod), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 17:05 (twenty years ago)

BRILLIANT! Give a great hitting team MORE baserunners. IN THE THIRD INNING!

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 17:07 (twenty years ago)

OF THE FIRST GAME OF THE SERIES!

Bruce Bochy is the new Jim Tracy.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 17:08 (twenty years ago)

If you're not going to trust your #1 guy to get you out of a jam, then why bother even coming to the ballpark?

Also: meet the Padres 3rd hitter - .280 / .360 / .347

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 17:11 (twenty years ago)

I didn't know Dave Magadan (.390ish OBPs, slower than the DMV) was the SD hitting coach. He's responsible for either the deep counts or the DPs.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 17:35 (twenty years ago)

Peavy apparently is not the real deal. 3 straight balls to Sanders with the bases juiced. Thanks for coming out Padres, here's your parting gift.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 17:37 (twenty years ago)

And that parting gift: a grand salami.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 17:38 (twenty years ago)

Joe Sheehan w/ the KISS OF DEATH!

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 17:45 (twenty years ago)

Except he also said short-series predictions are bullshit, which we all know anyway.

At least Peavy will be well-rested for Game 4!

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 17:53 (twenty years ago)

MAN DOWN MAN DOWN

Jimmy Mod wants you to tighten the strings on your corset (The Famous Jimmy Mod), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 17:58 (twenty years ago)

holy shit was carpenter injured??

John (jdahlem), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 17:59 (twenty years ago)

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 18:08 (twenty years ago)

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 18:08 (twenty years ago)

wtf was mod talking about, anyone?

John (jdahlem), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 18:15 (twenty years ago)

Mets, PLEASE AVOID RAMON HERNANDEZ.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 18:41 (twenty years ago)

Ha! Pads actually "force" TLR to go to Izzy in the 9th! Nice!

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 19:03 (twenty years ago)

Jonah Keri on the Morris Factor:

Tony, if you had the guts, you should consider having Morris serve as clubhouse boy for the playoffs, salaries, politics and fan reaction be damned. According to BP's Support Neutral Report, Morris has been the 5th-best starter on the Cards' staff, the other 4 solidly ahead of him.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 19:09 (twenty years ago)

OMG RAMON HERNANDEZ AKA ROBERTO HERNANDEZ

He should've bunted.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 19:11 (twenty years ago)

So, um, despite the fact that the Padres lost (and Bruce Bochy showed NO CONFIDENCE in his #1 starter), things didn't turn out so bad: Peavy's well-rested for his next start (as Mords noted), they got to Izzy, they stuck it to Izzy (and the Card bullpen as a whole), and they made a semi-respectable showing of a game that was well out of hand.

Bruce Bochy is a suckass, tho.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 19:15 (twenty years ago)

Anyone wanna take a stab at the over/under for game 2?

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 20:01 (twenty years ago)

758

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 20:01 (twenty years ago)

I don't see why Bochy made a bad decision in pulling Peavy. Maybe he should have pulled him earlier, but when it's 8-0, lick your wounds and move on. They showed that they can score against a weakened Cardinals bullpen. Hopefully they can muster a little offense against Mulder et al and get things moving back in the right direction.

However, I would like to point out that I hate the Astros for winning the wild card because I would rather be playing the Braves, that's for sure. Pujols/Sanders/Walker/Edmonds... yikes.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 21:22 (twenty years ago)

Breaking News: Jake Peavy is out for the postseason:

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/playoffs2005/news/story?id=2181056

Uh, that pretty much will do it, then.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 21:27 (twenty years ago)

polyphonic (polyphonic), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 21:34 (twenty years ago)

yeah, he's out for the postseason. fractured ribs! ugh. bye bye padres.

maura (maura), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 21:35 (twenty years ago)

One postseason gem next year... for the Yankees!

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 21:40 (twenty years ago)

I'm kinda surprised that more people don't get hurt during on-field celebration.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 23:11 (twenty years ago)

Huh? is that how he hurt himself????

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 23:13 (twenty years ago)

Yep. Someone else got hurt in post game celebration a year or two ago, I just cannot remember who it was.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 02:08 (twenty years ago)

'gax does not get credit for anticipating a different medical issue!

At least SD knows it can hit the snot out of Izzy... one of those overpaid practitioners of Cowboy Brantley's 9th Inning Magic.

If Walker hadn't made that catch...

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 12:13 (twenty years ago)

how 'bout that mark mulder????

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 6 October 2005 19:46 (twenty years ago)

How 'bout ASTACIO? so far at least...

haha, Saturday's game starts at 11pm Eastern, for the diehards.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 6 October 2005 19:55 (twenty years ago)

So, uh, what should the Padres do this offseason.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Thursday, 6 October 2005 21:38 (twenty years ago)

Fire Bruce Bochy.

Fire Ryan Klesko.

Fire Sean Burroughs.

Fire Mark Loretta.

Move the PETCO Park fences in by 500 feet.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 6 October 2005 21:40 (twenty years ago)

I'm not really clear on how this team won 82 games.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Thursday, 6 October 2005 21:55 (twenty years ago)

Or how they won 4 of 7 against the Cardinals.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Thursday, 6 October 2005 22:44 (twenty years ago)

i think towers might get the axe. he had kind of a 'brownie, you're doing a hell of a job' moment the other day, and alderson's livid enough that it seems like someone's going to hang for the peavy thing:

"I thought [Peavy] looked great," Padres general manager Kevin Towers said. "I told a couple of advance scouts I was sitting next to, 'He's got his 'A' game today.'"

maura (maura), Friday, 7 October 2005 01:07 (twenty years ago)

Arent the Padres going to lose Giles? Alot of SABR minded types are fond of him, but I think hes too damn old..

Stuh-du-du-du-du-du-du-denka (jingleberries), Friday, 7 October 2005 01:20 (twenty years ago)

He had a great year, but yeah at his age you don't want to pay him like he's gonna reproduce it for the next three.

The glimmer for the Pads, besides going home, is LaRussa is starting his pitcher most likely to be beaten.

>I'm not really clear on how this team won 82 games.<

They didn't get the Cards for all 162 this year.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 7 October 2005 12:20 (twenty years ago)

Anyone hear Eric Karros say the forbidden words -- that the seat-of-the-pants postseason TV schedule fucks up players' timing? I wonder if he'll be given a talking-to.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 7 October 2005 13:20 (twenty years ago)

Karros needs a talking to for other reasons - like being a douche.

Stuh-du-du-du-du-du-du-denka (jingleberries), Friday, 7 October 2005 15:47 (twenty years ago)

And there's some choice defensive cockcraft for the Pads...and Eckstein goes yard. I'd love to see the eastern time zone quarter-hours for this one.

d4niel coh3n (dayan), Sunday, 9 October 2005 02:40 (twenty years ago)

Did David Eckstein train with Barry Bonds during the offseason or something?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Sunday, 9 October 2005 02:53 (twenty years ago)

Isringhausen looked like Bill Pulsipher out there, but the Cards still held on. Joe Morgan just officially made them his SHOCKING pick to win the WS.
