There should be some interesting pitching matchups. I'll be suprised if the Braves can really tack into that Astros starting pitching trio. Atlanta seems to have a bit more offense, but I could see Houston really racking up the K's in this series. I could also see these games being pretty tight and low scoring, unless they tap into the bullpens. The relief pitching for both clubs gets weak outside of the closers and Farnsworth was inconsistent in his only playoff appearances with the Cubs.

I won't mind seeing either club move on to the next round or win it all, as both clubs have some players that I have enjoyed watching play.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Monday, 3 October 2005 02:21 (twenty years ago)

Smoltz's arm worries me. I guess they won't announce the playoff rosters until tomorrow. Not too concerned about the Braves losing the last four games, but I am worried about a thin bench. Sutton said they might be carrying three catchers because Estrada's bell is still rung, and they'll have both halves of the 1B platoon, so that's going to leave them with four outfielders.

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Monday, 3 October 2005 02:36 (twenty years ago)

Braves in 4.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Monday, 3 October 2005 03:15 (twenty years ago)

Haha have you all learned nothing???@!! 3 and out for Braves.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 3 October 2005 04:25 (twenty years ago)

I know that the Braves are the kings of losing in the NLCS, but we're not there yet.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Monday, 3 October 2005 04:27 (twenty years ago)

Stros in 4 or 5, but I don't much care.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 3 October 2005 12:33 (twenty years ago)

Note to Ken Macha: when your catcher has an OBP that's higher than his SLG, bat him somewhere BESIDES 2nd. The Astros might be hella stupid, giving paychecks to a guy just to give the ladies something to swoon about, but at least they don't let him bat in any situations of consequence. That said, it looks like everyone aside from Berkman & Ensberg hits like Bradley away from the Capri Sun Juice Pouch. (Biggio's resurgence this year is definitely a product of some fine home cookin'.)

Possible Bobby Cox slaphead move: I assume Horacio Ramirez is starting Game 3, despite being a MUCH better pitcher at home (3.59 ERA / 1.25 WHIP / .253 BAA) than away from it (5.69 ERA / 1.54 WHIP / .310 BAA). Also of note: Hudson shut out the 'Stros this year AT THE JUICE BOX (tho it was in April - they double-switched out Ensberg!) (Danny Kolb w/ the save, too, roffle) (also of note: the game went into extra innings scoreless - guess which 'roid freak started for Houston). Anyway, given that TH is only gonna get 1 start this series (barring some Game Five desperation), it might behoove BC to flip-flop those two in the rotation, more for HR's sake than TH's.

This series is all about the 'Stros shutting down the Braves, tho - I can see the Astros getting runs across because of wee Willy Tavares "causing havoc" and getting in on a 2-run Ensberg / Twinkie more than I can see the Jones Bros. doing yard work against the Stros pitchers (unless they do it on the guys between The Top Three & Lidge). Fearless prediction: Braves win Game 1 behind Schmoltzie, then drop 3 in a row, w/ Hudson & Horacio getting shelled. And if the newest Mazzone reclamation project, Jorge Sosa, sees any starting action, his bloom's coming off quick-like.

In summary: Tavares gets too much love from the broadcast booth, Andruw mails it in, Oswalt doesn't get enough love, Adam Everett goes goofy, Giles & Furcal work the tin gloves, Astros in 4.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 3 October 2005 14:06 (twenty years ago)

Ramirez will be in the pen, Hudson's going game one against Pettite, and Thomson will be the fourth starter, if they decide to go with one. Sosa v. Oswalt in game three might be a gimme for Houston (considering ATL's bullpen will get started around the sixth inning or so), but between the first two games' match-ups I like the Braves' chances. Hudson should hold up well against Pettite. Game two could come down to Smoltz's shoulder vs. Rockhead's back, but if Smoltz can go seven or eight, and Clemens leaves after six (kind of like the norm, right?), Atlanta could take that one. If they can beat the big three twice, Atlanta should have it, yes?

Garrett Martin (Garrett Martin), Monday, 3 October 2005 14:21 (twenty years ago)

hmm... or are the 'Stros gonna risk a three-man rotation with two semi- and/or oft-gimped senior citizens?

Garrett Martin (Garrett Martin), Monday, 3 October 2005 14:21 (twenty years ago)

If I were Garner, pending his condition I might hold Clemens out til a Game 5.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 3 October 2005 15:30 (twenty years ago)

FWIW, Gammons has picked all 4 series to go 3-2...

Jimmy Mod wants you to tighten the strings on your corset (The Famous Jimmy Mod), Monday, 3 October 2005 15:54 (twenty years ago)

Rotation plan for the Astros is Pettite-Clemens-Oswalt-Backe-Pettite.

I think Garner learned his lesson last year concerning starting pitchers on three days rest. Oswalt and Clemens were both gassed by the end of the LCS.

Backe has pitched well down the stretch and was great at home in playoffs last year.

boldbury (boldbury), Monday, 3 October 2005 22:36 (twenty years ago)

I think Garner learned his lesson last year concerning starting pitchers on three days rest. Oswalt and Clemens were both gassed by the end of the LCS.

Well, sometimes you have to gas your pitchers. If the Astros are down 2-1, are they really going to stick Backe out there when Pettite is available? The season is on the line.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Monday, 3 October 2005 22:38 (twenty years ago)

Note to Ken Macha: when your catcher has an OBP that's higher than his SLG, bat him somewhere BESIDES 2nd. The Astros might be hella stupid, giving paychecks to a guy just to give the ladies something to swoon about, but at least they don't let him bat in any situations of consequence.

Brad Ausmus post All-Star numbers:

.281 avg
.380 obp
.372 slg

Plus, a 10th-inning homerun off Isringhausen to tie a game.

boldbury (boldbury), Monday, 3 October 2005 22:40 (twenty years ago)

Atlanta shows a 26-man roster. Sneaky!

Rock Is Dead They Say (Rock Hardy), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 14:07 (twenty years ago)

They have til game time to drop one, yes?

Ausmus also has VETERAN PRESENCE.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 14:09 (twenty years ago)

Don't say that. Dusty will want to trade for him.

boldbury (boldbury), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 14:19 (twenty years ago)

Kolb left out! ouch.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 19:36 (twenty years ago)

Julio Franco is the oldest postseason player, yes?

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 19:37 (twenty years ago)

ESPN's ATL team roster still shows 26 players, but at MLB.com (a fucking miserable site to try and navigate), Jay Powell's name is dropped.

Also:
Instead of carrying Kolb, Cox opted instead to carry Joey Devine, who gained a spot when Blaine Boyer awoke on Monday morning without feeling in his right arm.

?!?!?

Rock Is Dead They Say (Rock Hardy), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 19:41 (twenty years ago)

LOOK AT THOSE STROS BATS!

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 19:51 (twenty years ago)

All both of them!

(alternatively, look at Tim Hudson's 4 walks!)

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 19:54 (twenty years ago)

Other than Jordan's catch, this game has been hell to listen to.

How many empty seats at the Ted?

Beautiful Brad comes through, hatas!

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 20:11 (twenty years ago)

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 20:17 (twenty years ago)

how many of those seats would be filled if folks weren't, you know, working?

Garrett Martin (Garrett Martin), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 20:20 (twenty years ago)

the braves deserve to lose for wearing those godawful red shirts

mookieproof (mookieproof), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 20:51 (twenty years ago)

As they were wrapping up the broadcast, Karros (? I think it was him) said, "If you're the Altanta Braves, you didn't play as well as you wanted to, you didn't get the best performance from Tim Hudson, so there are a lot of positives to take away from this".

It's all in the silver lining, I guess. Hey, they could have lost 15-2.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 22:25 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I think they were a little too positive about the Braves effort just because they got some good at bats against the Astros' 4th and 5th bullpen guys.

Also, did it appear to anybody else that Cox was managing on auto-pilot today? MoBerg has three RBIs already, so let's walk Berkman to load to bases to face him. Seems like a decision that was made before the game even started. And then walking Biggio to load the bases and get to Taveras. Does Atlanta have any advance scouts? They've pinch-hit for Taveras with Bagwell at least twice in last week. News flash: The Astros have other guys that can play centerfied.

boldbury (boldbury), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 22:33 (twenty years ago)

I wonder if Krukker caught this from his colleague re his fave rookie (via Paul Swydan at Prospectus):

"Bagwell was inserted for Willy Taveras, whose offense is so bad commentator Steve Phillips said it was 'almost like having the pitcher up.' Bagwell subsequently singled with the bases loaded, making it a 6-3 ballgame."

What else are the working folks of Atlanta saving their vac/sick days for?

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 6 October 2005 16:27 (twenty years ago)

not everybody summers in kennebunkport you yuppie fuck. i'll be at the game tonight - after yesterday and with the vols saturday and pats sunday there are bigger things on georgia's plate right now though.

Wow, Francoeur walked by Clemens.

OH YEAH BRIAN McCANN

William Paper Scissors (Rock Hardy), Friday, 7 October 2005 00:01 (twenty years ago)

McCann clubbed that pitch.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Friday, 7 October 2005 00:06 (twenty years ago)

I wonder if Cox told Frenchy he'd better see more than seven pitches in four ABs tonight or else.

William Paper Scissors (Rock Hardy), Friday, 7 October 2005 00:10 (twenty years ago)

OMG Kruk OTM on 'Stros not making Smoltz throw more pitches.

Nothing like the war chant to remind me that it's the Braves' FANS that repel me most.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 7 October 2005 13:27 (twenty years ago)

MEMO TO LAROCHE: IF YOU RUN HARDER, YOU GO FASTER, YOU CHINLESS NUMBNUTS!

(But thanks for the Taco Belgrande, BTW.)

William Paper Scissors (Rock Hardy), Sunday, 9 October 2005 18:11 (twenty years ago)

WHY ISN'T THIS GAME ON FOX!!?!!?!? FUCK YOU FOOTBALL!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Sunday, 9 October 2005 18:50 (twenty years ago)

Speaking of Taco Belgrandes ... 6-5 game.

I wasn't comfortable with the 6-1 lead ... can't explain why. Sutcliffe and whatshisface have been ragging on the Braves bullpen all series, as if everyone in their pen was a replica of Dan Kolb 2005 (although they have been pitching like it thus far in the series. Come on, they weren't usually that bad, in fact, Farnsworth, Reitsma, and Boyer were damn good.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 9 October 2005 19:00 (twenty years ago)

According to Sutcliffe, ATL's been collapsing all year.

William Paper Scissors (Rock Hardy), Sunday, 9 October 2005 19:04 (twenty years ago)

Those of you with a taste for quality sideline reporting really ought to check out John Franco's "work" on the national radio broadcast:

*crackly telephone line sounds*
"J.P.?"
"Go ahead, John."
"I'm down here on the field, and Qualls is throwing sinker after sinker!"
"..."

d4niel coh3n (dayan), Sunday, 9 October 2005 19:16 (twenty years ago)

Scott's near-homer was probably the closest foul call I've ever seen.

Issuing an IBB to pitch to Bagwell felt like a "cue ominous music" moment, but it somehow worked out for the Braves.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 9 October 2005 19:34 (twenty years ago)

This game is something else.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Sunday, 9 October 2005 21:18 (twenty years ago)

The game Hudson pitched in feels like a totally different game.

Arguing balls and strikes in the 16th inning of a must win game with nearly the entire roster depleted, C/D?

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 9 October 2005 21:21 (twenty years ago)

Julio Franco + Roger Clemens = 100 years!

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Sunday, 9 October 2005 21:27 (twenty years ago)

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Sunday, 9 October 2005 21:44 (twenty years ago)

FUCK

William Paper Scissors (Rock Hardy), Sunday, 9 October 2005 22:01 (twenty years ago)

I stopped watching after the 12th when it became clear that the Braves were just waiting for the Astros to end it.

Jimmy Mod wants you to tighten the strings on your corset (The Famous Jimmy Mod), Sunday, 9 October 2005 22:10 (twenty years ago)

It won't be popular and it won't be pretty, but Julio Franco has got to go. Hell with this "playing to 50" stuff.

William Paper Scissors (Rock Hardy), Sunday, 9 October 2005 23:08 (twenty years ago)

Wow. I watched that entire thing.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 10 October 2005 02:43 (twenty years ago)

j blount (papa la bas), Monday, 10 October 2005 02:59 (twenty years ago)

From BP:

"Everyone was congratulating me, patting me on the back. I had several people say I should buy a lottery ticket or go to Vegas."

(!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 10 October 2005 17:26 (twenty years ago)

!
What are the odds????

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 10 October 2005 18:32 (twenty years ago)

I left for band practice at the start of the bottom of the 8th with one on and one out with Hudson pitching. When I got home, I could not believe this game was still going.

Way back when the Mets and Astros played that marathon game for the NL title in 86, I left to go out to dinner with my parents with the Astros and came back and could not believe that game was still going. I'm sure Garner and Jose Cruz talked about that game a bit during yesterday's marathon, since they both were playing for the Astros at the time. In fact, I think either Jose Cruz or maybe Enos Cabell may have made the last out of that game.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Monday, 10 October 2005 19:31 (twenty years ago)

Box score for the '86 game:

http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/B10150HOU1986.htm

Kevin Bass struck out to end it with Denny Walling on 2nd base. I'm pretty sure Cabell was gone by then. I know he was doing some broadcasting for the Astros as early as '87.

Besides Nolan Ryan in the stands, the other participant of the '86 game in attendace yesterday was catcher Alan Ashby, currently the Astros radio analyst.

I was in 6th grade in '86 and was aware that the Astros were in the playoffs but I didn't watch any of the games. It wasn't till the next year that I gained full sports consciousness and became a raving Astros fan. This happened one night when I discovered I could listen to all the games on the radio. Kevin Bass hit a homerun from each side of the plate in that game.

boldbury (boldbury), Monday, 10 October 2005 19:59 (twenty years ago)

Crap. Can you fix this, gygax!? Delete the first one, please.

boldbury (boldbury), Monday, 10 October 2005 20:03 (twenty years ago)

When boldbury posts this a 3rd time, it turns out that Bass homered from each side of the plate THREE TIMES. Which is a record.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 10 October 2005 20:04 (twenty years ago)

Also, boldbury is a Viking.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 10 October 2005 20:08 (twenty years ago)

Also, boldbury is a Viking.

Please explain this!

boldbury (boldbury), Monday, 10 October 2005 20:11 (twenty years ago)

Cabell's last year was 86 and he was with LA. After you said that, I remember Bass making the last out. Cabell did make the last out in 1980, when the Astros lost to the Phils in 10 innings and the series 3-2. I remember Cabell making the last out because he threw his helmet a half mile into the air after the play.

ASTROS 10TH: HEEP BATTED FOR WOODS; Heep popped to shortstop;
Puhl lined to center; Cabell made an out to center; 0 R, 0 H, 0
E, 0 LOB. Phillies 8, Astros 7.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Monday, 10 October 2005 22:39 (twenty years ago)

http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/B10150HOU1986.htm

Here is a linky to the 86 Mets/Astros marathon which featured one Dickie Thon. It reminded me that Billy Hatcher was a good playoff hitter. Rijo was great, but Hatcher should have been at least co-MVP of the 1990 World Series.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Monday, 10 October 2005 22:45 (twenty years ago)

I'm also suprised the Ex-Cub factor did not come up in any of the post game analysis of the Braves collapse. I suppose the sportswriters have too much Clemens to talk about to bring that old story up.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Monday, 10 October 2005 23:11 (twenty years ago)

o o O O (Does Earl Nash even read my posts?)

boldbury (boldbury), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 02:22 (twenty years ago)

"Does Earl Nash even read my posts?"
"After you said that, I remember Bass making the last out."

I went and checked it out after your post and realized I was thinking about Cabell making the last out in 1980. It doesn't explain why I posted that link again, but I suppose I was just laughing to myself about the name Dickie Thon.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 03:27 (twenty years ago)

Cabell's son used to come into my store sometimes way back in my former life in retail. I didn't recognize him as such right off the bat, but as soon as I saw the name on his (mom's) credit card, it clicked. He seemed like a good kid.

boldbury (boldbury), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 05:23 (twenty years ago)

Did Morgan Ensberg always have that big Brian Downing open batting stance or is this something he changed this year? I don't remember him having such an open stance, but maybe that was because Ensberg used to only make outs.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 12:09 (twenty years ago)

What a ballgame! even if gygax doesn't think it was "worth watching."

Was Nolan Ryan using a Stadium Pal?

btw, since we don't judge bad decisions by lucky outcomes: Garner letting Ausmus hit in the 9th was nuts, yes?

I'd root for Houston to go all the way -- IF I got assurances that Dubya's parents would suffer massive coronaries in the celebration. (I hope their driver took them to the Astrodome Sunday.)

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 12:34 (twenty years ago)

You bet yr ass letting Ausmus hit was nuts. Unless someone gave him Sammy Sosa's BP bat.

How does the point system work?

polyphonic (polyphonic), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 17:31 (twenty years ago)

Seems pretty random, arbitrary does it? (it is!)

10 points for guessing team and # of games
6 points for guessing team and # of games +1/-1
4.5 points for guessing team.
3 points for guessing 5 games and losing (this seems very stupid in retrospect?)
0 points for guessing nothing.

How about 10 points for guessing team/# of games and 5 points for guessing team?

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 17:38 (twenty years ago)

I just made a post about this on another thread:

OK, I finally understand gygax's point system:

Correct team + # of games = 10 pts
Correct team, off by one game = 6 pts
correct team, off by two games = 4.5 pts
correct # of games = 3 pts
all other combos = 0 pts

I was a little bit off ...

I like the 6/4.5 system. And three points for guessing that a series will go the distance is reasonable, since there's a lot of luck involved in who wins a 5/7 game series. It doesn't seem right to get zero points for not picking the right team in that situation. However, if that's the case, then I'm going to predict both series to go the distance, since that seems to be the way to maximize the expected # of points.

Maybe 3 points for guessing 6 OR 7 games and losing?

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 17:43 (twenty years ago)

Okay I'll stick with the system as your argument makes plenty of sense. I think that max games (5 for DS, 7 for CS) will be the 4.5 then. Thanks!

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 17:47 (twenty years ago)

How about talking some more about the best game of the year?

By Win Probability, the Astros' MVP of the game was... ex-Met Dan Wheeler.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 20:00 (twenty years ago)

MLB bean counters are feverishly trying to figure out how to re-bill thousands of credit cards for the extra game.

William Paper Scissors (Rock Hardy), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 20:04 (twenty years ago)

The grand slam and the game-winning homers, both hit to the short porch in left, traveled a mere 335 feet and 338, respectively (if you can respect that).

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 11 October 2005 20:26 (twenty years ago)

The Braves were hitting with a short porch in left, too.

And regarding Ausmus's hitting in the 9th: I really don't think Bagwell has the power back right now. I think he's great to have on the bench when you need a pinch-hit to drive in the run. In his at-bats since coming back, he has hit some line drives and many ground balls, but nothing in the air to even medium depth in the outfield (although supposedly he has been hitting homeruns in batting practice). Inserting him in that spot when you need a big fly may be asking too much right now.

And that is the second time in a month Ausmus has hit a game-tying dinger off a closer in the potential final inning of a game. He hit one off Isringhausen in the 10th a few weeks ago.

boldbury (boldbury), Wednesday, 12 October 2005 02:06 (twenty years ago)

Who else was on the Astro bench in the 9th who had HR capability, and did Garner have a catcher left?
