sigh
No shame in a tough game against Harden, who to this point is a health tragedy on the level of Wood or Prior (despite no one caring about Rich Harden).

Woody might turn out ok. He's only 30. I am hoping for a Smoltz/Ryan Dempsterlike conversion for Wood eventually.
Prior is finished, according to a scout I talked to at Spring Training. He said Prior has bad mechanics, always had. Prior "hooks" his arm.
Somebody at the Padres-Cubs game told me they saw Mark on one of the practice fields. She said he was throwing, or maybe it was just a photo shoot.
At the main field Prior signed a lot of autographs, like way too many autographs, like somebody please go out and get him he might hurt himself amount of autographs. He has the same "finish" when signing autographs as when he used to pitch, ending up with left hand on hip attitude.

My mom tried to put a brave face on it, saying, "He was a good hitter, right? Maybe he could become a position player."

― The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Sunday, 30 March 2008 07:55 (seventeen years ago)
I dunno, I would probably freak out and get a backup security loser hat too if the Cubs ever did win it.
Like a Giants one.
― felicity, Sunday, 30 March 2008 08:01 (seventeen years ago)
My Cubs hat is, um, a Cubs hat (just like the one Ryan Theriot wears!) -- tho I bought it in Chicago off a vendor outside Wrigley 3 years ago, so maybe that makes it extra special?
Anyway, if I was going to buy a backup hat (and my Cubs hat might be #1, since my Sox hat is all but done), it'd be either A's or DEVIL Rays. I will not even consider buying a Giants hat until A) Sabean gets fired or B) Sabean brings up / signs a hitter that doesn't make me want to yak on my feet. Which I'm sure makes Leeee & Shasta totally happy. :D
But hey the Cubs how do they shot Matt Murton?
― David R., Sunday, 30 March 2008 18:38 (seventeen years ago)
Matt Murton to AAA with good attitude please trade me award.
Hope the Cubbies deal him for a non, sub, Mendoza, hitting, catcher.

Um, I hope you're talking about trading him for a BACKUP, because Soto is a meaty slugger bro. Or is Kendall still lingering on the palette like bad veggie deep dish?

r
Good question.
I don't know all the players now but here are a few. Often I like watching players not just for being good but for being original.
Kerry Wood, obviously. He really tries but doesn't say much. I saw him hit the game tying homer in Game 7 of the 2003 NLCS over our heads onto Waveland Avneue.
Manny Ramirez. Incredibly exciting, very original. Chock-full of personality. Long eyelashes.
Jacoby Ellsbury, for the way he played in the postseason last year.
Khalil Greene. I am fascinated with the dissonance between his playing style and the way he looks like he would play. The best word I can think of to describe him is beatitude.
Stephen Drew. I liked watching him last night, he is also very understated.
Eric Byrnes. Consummate dirtbag FREAK that can play some. He is constantly doing bizarre stuff in the field, like a tweaked-out twirling girl at a Dead show. He has a reality show on Fox AZN and rides around Phoenix in a van that he calls the Shag Wagon.
Koske Fukudome. Aside from obviously being good for the Cubs he has that characteristic Japanese hitting stroke where he extends his arms really far on the follow through. It is neat that a game can be so old yet there can be new distinctive styles imported from other leagues.
There are a lot of pitchers I admire like Greg Maddux and Randy Johnson for obvious reasons, but that's all that captures my fancy for right now. I would like to watch someone who has a sick 12 to 6 curveball, any suggestions?
― felicity, Saturday, 12 April 2008 18:00 (seventeen years ago)
felicity -- the 12-6 cv is the sickest pitch in baseball & i would recommend beckett, buchholz, burnett, chamberlain, hughes, & verlander

DeRosa: will be qualified at 6 fantasy positions by May?
― felicity, Tuesday, 22 April 2008 01:25 (seventeen years ago)
Ok, in searching for an answer to the question of the day "WTF happened to Barry Zito?" I stumbled into Carlos Gomez's Bullpen Mechanics.
DaveR and callingalldestroyer have mentioned it here as well. I just love this kind of extreme close-up qualitative analysis to death. Now I understand why that guy in AZ said Prior will never be good again:
Breaking Down the Broken Down: A Video Analysis of Mark Prior
The entries on Linecum and Verlander contain some A+ pitching pr0n.

favorite current Cub? do we think Pete Crow-Armstrong will "murder" mlb pitching next season? Shota >>> Yoshinobu?
― omar little, Saturday, 26 October 2024 23:10 (one year ago)
I was really excited for Shota Imanaga. I had a soft spot for Morel, too, and I wish him well in future endeavors.
We will see. :)
― felicity, Sunday, 27 October 2024 00:11 (one year ago)
Mark Prior turned out all right though! One manager ring and being married to a Giants fan I voted (twice) for another ;)

I drafted Morel in our fantasy league and was ready to settle in with him as a possible keeper but I dropped him pretty fast 😪 I do wish him copious levels of good luck.

Belated fantasy league congrats to Corbin Burnesen and very special shoutout to runner up Send Nootbaar, good to see you both on here, guys.
btw who is your favorite current Cub, omar? There's always next year.
― felicity, Monday, 28 October 2024 03:21 (one year ago)
Shota has been my favorite post-world series Cub, his whole narrative arc was perfect. It wasn’t a particularly great season but him entering the scene like he did was real Dexter Fowler 2016 spring training vibes and it contributed to it being a real *feel good* season. Runner ups Happ, Suzuki, Paredes. Those are the types of players you want your lineup to be filled with.
And thanks! 🙏🏻

A message from Ryne Sandberg:
Unfortunately, we recently learned the cancer has relapsed and it has spread to other organs," he said. "This means that I'm back to more intensive treatment. We will continue to be positive, strong, and fight to beat this. Thank you for your thoughts and prayers for me and my family."
Sounds frightening. Fuck cancer. All the best to him.
― NoTimeBeforeTime, Tuesday, 10 December 2024 17:26 (ten months ago)
damn, that's terrible. he was my first "favorite player" as a kid, just an absolutely clock-like consistency to him, and it was a rule that the Cubs would never win the Series and Ryno would always be the best player in the game (the first part was always true, the second part was almost true from '84-'92). It's unbelievable he had to wait til his third time on the HOF ballot to make it in, and his first time he didn't even hit 50%.
― omar little, Tuesday, 10 December 2024 17:32 (ten months ago)
Oh no. Ryno was always a bright spot for us Cubbie fans.
Today I read about the iconic matchup with him and Bruce Sutter in the "Ryne Sandberg game":
"There's a drive, way back! Might be outta here! It is! It is! He did it again! He did it again! The game is tied! The game is tied! Holy Cow! Listen to this crowd, everybody's gone bananas! What would the odds be if I told you that twice Sandberg would hit home runs off Bruce Sutter?"
F cancer as always and hoping for the best.
