Alex Rodriguez may not yet have any World Series rings to show for his remarkable career, but the Yankees' third baseman picked up his second American League Most Valuable Player Award on Monday.

Rodriguez beat out David Ortiz, Boston's larger-than-life designated hitter, who finished a close second in the vote. Rodriguez earned 16 first-place votes and 331 points, while Ortiz received 11 first-place votes and 307 points.

BBWAA was bound to get ONE correct.

All those Yankee placements look about right, even Jeter. Nice to see Hafner recognized properly too.

Rodriguez went 2-for-15 in the Yankees' ALDS loss to the Angels, while Ortiz had just one RBI as the Red Sox were swept out of the playoffs by the White Sox in the opening round.

It's funny how nobody made a peep about the fact expressed in the second part of that sentence.

Anyone see the entire totals, ie, how many ballots listed Podsednik?

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 14 November 2005 19:57 (twenty years ago)

Podsednik got one vote each for 5th, 6th, 8th, and 10th, for a total of 15 points and 12th place overall.

i like podsednik. he hit that one game-winning HR and he seems like a decent chap. but he shouldn't go near the top ten/twenty/fifty!

Funny that Contreras got a vote and not Buehrle or Garland.

No Cy Young love for Chacon or Small!

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 14 November 2005 21:16 (twenty years ago)

Tanyon Sturtze must be devastated.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 14 November 2005 21:36 (twenty years ago)

Actually, if Cy ballots listed ten names you can bet Chacon or Small would've gotten votes.

Amazing ... I had no idea he was so close to the record. I think MannyBManny had about 19, I thought if anyone would break the record it would be him.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Wednesday, 13 June 2012 04:54 (thirteen years ago)

glad it was done by a centaur with a sterling, untainted career and character.

He's a bit like Bonds to me

a shame that he tainted his career with steroids, because he was plenty good without them
