Yeah, it really hurts the Red Sox that they had 4 years of Damon's prime for only $8M per year, won a World Series w/ the guy, and watched him get concussed and banged up all over Fenway & the AL, and are now "losing him" to their dreaded rivals to the tune of 4 yrs / $52M. Give me a second to weep bitter tears of sadness.

PS - fuck an Alter Bridge fan.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 06:06 (twenty years ago)

Addressing their monumental starting pitching woes by adding more hitting is the sort of dumbassery that the Rangers executed so well during the ARod era. As for the Yankees ... oh wait!

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 06:36 (twenty years ago)

As good as he's been, I wasn't thrilled about the idea of Damon coming back for these kinds of terms. Even more so than Varitek, locking Damon up to a long-term contract would have been a risky move for Boston. Giving him 4/$52 million would have been crazy.

Needless to say, drunken BU girls are CRUSHED right now.

d4niel coh3n (dayan), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 08:35 (twenty years ago)

snooze. yep, i'll be the first to call him a traitor...fuck him. but its not his fault, he went where the money was (which we all know it was about). I just don't quite get this Red Sox ownership bullshit...they are starting to act like the Gorman/Duquette era. Anyways bring on Jeremy Reed and his .245 batting average.

slow jamz and white guy indie acoustic shit (Chris V), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 11:03 (twenty years ago)

He looked really fragile the last several weeks of last season. Of course I always liked him but what actually was he contributing at the end? OBP and that's about it. He was a total liability in the field. Future generations could study how he convinced people he could steal bases.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 13:19 (twenty years ago)

Haha reading Shaughnessy's column on this convinces me that this is going to work out alright, if you go by the theory that everything Shaughnessy says is wrong. What a frickin dumbass.

slow jamz and white guy indie acoustic shit (Chris V), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 14:02 (twenty years ago)

"The Sox won't recover from this one easily. In an already dismal offseason, they've now lost their center fielder and their leadoff hitter. They've also lost a local icon, a rare favorite of teenage girls and fanboy bloggers. Losing Damon hurts them on the field and in the arena of popular opinion. And losing Damon to the Yankees compounds the damage. When Alex Rodriguez got away a couple of years ago, Sox fans were fairly quick to scorn A-Rod and move forward."

Haha reading Shaughnessy's column on this convinces me that this is going to work out alright, if you go by the theory that everything Shaughnessy says is wrong.

OTM. If Shaughnessy says this offseason has been dismal, imagine what he'd say if he covered, I dunno, ANY OTHER TEAM IN BASEBALL.

d4niel coh3n (dayan), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 14:15 (twenty years ago)

Of course now the sox have no CF, SS, 1B and possibly no LF. I would love to see them swing a move for the pride of Rhode Island...Rocco Baldelli...who would be loved here. But that ain't happening.

Chris, brah, take a timeout & stick yr dick in the mashed potatoes or something.

The Sox could do worse than re-acquiring Dave Roberts.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 18:19 (twenty years ago)

"The Sox could do worse than re-acquiring Dave Roberts."

Boston will have to trade for Roberts, as he has already resigned with San Diego.

a rare favorite of teenage girls and fanboy bloggers

First you lose the teenage girls, then it's the pennant. Before you know it, the fanboy bloggers turn against you and you've turned into the Kansas City Royals.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 19:41 (twenty years ago)

Boston will have to trade for Roberts, as he has already resigned with San Diego.

now if only the red sox had a big fat southpaw who wanted to go to san diego...

screw damon, he was great for the team while he was here but i really think he'll give the yankees one stellar season at best. but that still leaves a huge f'ing hole in the outfield for this year. if they can't get roberts who plays there? gabe kapler?

it's staggering how quickly the bosox are dismantling the team that won the world series two years ago. the entire infield is gone as is 1/3 of the outfield (and it wouldn't surprise me if it goes to 2/3 by opening day).

otto midnight (otto midnight), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 20:04 (twenty years ago)

I guess the WICKED HAWT rumor is Clement to the M's for Jeremy Reed. How about some fun?

Johnny Damon, age 24 - 275/338/386 (472 ABs)
Jeremy Reed, age 24 - 254/322/352 (488 ABs)

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 21:18 (twenty years ago)

The Damon trade is the lead story on the Boston news tonight, it took about a quarter of the entire broadcast. They have three reporters "on location" from Fenway & the Bronx, all brought up the heartthrob factor.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Thursday, 22 December 2005 04:10 (twenty years ago)

i'd heard it was bronson arroyo as his contract is considerably less. but i wouldn't cry if either of them left.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Thursday, 22 December 2005 14:49 (twenty years ago)

at what point, though, does reed stop being a prospect and start being a not very good centerfielder? for two years we've waited for him to break out!

bring on Coco Crisp. Actually they could sign Count Chocula at a much lower price.

slow jamz and white guy indie acoustic shit (Chris V), Thursday, 22 December 2005 16:30 (twenty years ago)

now that nomah is out of the indians picture i doubt they're going to move crisp. latest i heard is that the bosox were going to take the money earmarked for damon and make a run at millwood? i dunno, rumors are what they are i guess.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Thursday, 22 December 2005 16:47 (twenty years ago)

well pitching wins championships...but its kind of hard to get there when your missing half the team. i just don't get the thinking behind half the sox moves this off season besides the beckett deal.

slow jamz and white guy indie acoustic shit (Chris V), Thursday, 22 December 2005 16:51 (twenty years ago)

pitching wins championships

Pish tosh! The Big Red Machine had no Cy contenders, let alone HOFers, on the mound.

Newsday has 4 pix of prospective Damon 'looks' that suggest he could be all of the Monkees.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 22 December 2005 17:52 (twenty years ago)

I understand the Sox moves fairly well - they're cutting bait on old and/or overpaid players. Damon's not worth $52mln. I don't know that he's worth $40mln over the next four.

I suspect that what they saw was the Yankees restocking for the short-term and the rest of their division building for the future. They're better off continuing to be the second-best team in the division and moving in some youth.

Erick Dampier is better than Shaq (miloaukerman), Thursday, 22 December 2005 19:18 (twenty years ago)

"Pish tosh! The Big Red Machine had no Cy contenders, let alone HOFers, on the mound."

To be fair the Big Red Machine had better non-Cy contenders than the Red Sox do these days.

yeah johnny longhair def aint worth 52 million but who the fuck is going to play centerfield. AND NOW THE SOX WANT TROY GLAUS...talk about overpaid and another 3rd baseman to boot. Yes, he can play first but never has. WTF. CHERHOYCHINO.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 23 December 2005 14:08 (twenty years ago)

thats true good dr. just another typical year in boston sports i guess. im intrigued by Gathright, but what good is his speed if the sox don't run...which they dont. maybe they would change the philosophy....i doubt it though. i would have loved for them to make a run at pierre.

slow jamz and white guy indie acoustic shit (Chris V), Friday, 23 December 2005 14:34 (twenty years ago)

Bill Simmons being a voice of reason is surely a sign of the Apocalypse. Famine, War, Sports Guy, something something.

Erick Dampier is better than Shaq (miloaukerman), Friday, 23 December 2005 19:18 (twenty years ago)

It felt like Simmons was repeating the same point over and over (and over and ...) but it was a meaningful point. Most of his articles have good points in them but you have to read around the Melrose Place and Survivor:Guatemala references to find them. Here, he laid off of that crap and only talked about baseball ... meanwhile, the abscence of Ian Ziering jokes had to be filled by repeating his main point several times.

Rosanne Dileo, the salon coordinator at Bellissima Salon and Spa in New Rochelle, was adamant that Damon still had too much up top and that the highlights were a definite no-no.

"He needs a buzz cut," she said. "It definitely needs to be shorter. He's going to be playing in the Bronx? That's a pretty-boy look."

oh dear....

"Beer-guzzling MC Mike O'Malley, costar of the CBS sitcom ''Yes, Dear," kept the festivities loose and irreverent. When a recent divorcee spent a chunk of her settlement on several big-ticket items to benefit children's charities, O'Malley announced that ''divorce is good for kids!" When he tried to bamboozle Kay Hanley into putting her awesome suede boots on the block, the singer agreed on one condition: that Peter Gammons model them in his tighty whities. He didn't, but the ESPN commentator -- who's currently holed up at Q Division studios recording his debut CD with producer Mike Denneen -- did trot out model roots-rock with help from the Gentlemen, Buffalo Tom frontman Bill Janovitz, and keyboardist Phil Aiken."
