OH FUCK YEAH

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Friday, 6 January 2006 18:23 (twenty years ago)

i'm in.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 6 January 2006 18:56 (twenty years ago)

me too

(shouldn't we have two leagues, with relegations?)

Haikunym (Haikunym), Friday, 6 January 2006 19:00 (twenty years ago)

you bet.

love the relegation idea.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Friday, 6 January 2006 19:18 (twenty years ago)

I'm in.

d4niel coh3n (dayan), Friday, 6 January 2006 19:18 (twenty years ago)

What is relegations? For now, I say yes I am in.

c(''c) (Leee), Friday, 6 January 2006 19:24 (twenty years ago)

i'm in this year!

last year i couldn't do it but i'm definitely in this year.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Friday, 6 January 2006 19:26 (twenty years ago)

i just hope i can do better than i did in my football league. but in my own defense i was unable to make it to that draft and my top two running backs and top two wide receivers were on the ir.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Friday, 6 January 2006 19:27 (twenty years ago)

Count me in.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Friday, 6 January 2006 20:03 (twenty years ago)

relegations:
two leagues, teams grouped into great and not-so-great based on last year's results (I think I'd be in the latter league)

at end of season great league's bottom two/three teams have to play in not-so-great league in 2007, top two/three teams in not-so-great get to move up to great league in 2007

continue ad infinitum

Haikunym (Haikunym), Friday, 6 January 2006 20:51 (twenty years ago)

Relegations sound interesting. The # of teams switching over could be higher too (four?), just to make sure that people in the Premier League don't try to coast over the last month of the season into a 7th place finish.

There was a lot of talk last year about having an IP minimum as well as maximum, or stricter requirements on the min/max number of starters and relievers a team could carry. I'm in favour of this.

The depth of a 20-team league justifies a 3-4 player DL, particularly if we have max/min quotas as per my previous paragraph.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Friday, 6 January 2006 21:14 (twenty years ago)

boo to this fancy foreign relegation stuff. it's un-american, i tells ya.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 6 January 2006 21:21 (twenty years ago)

well i don't care if we do it or not, just wanted to raise the possibility

it would solve the whole 20-team-deep league thing which makes people have to start many kansas city royals outfielders though

Haikunym (Haikunym), Friday, 6 January 2006 22:15 (twenty years ago)

I'm in. Will try to make it through the season with fewer than 5 moves this time.

Erick Dampier is better than Shaq (miloaukerman), Friday, 6 January 2006 22:22 (twenty years ago)

any room for a stranger?

ample parking (Garrett Martin), Monday, 9 January 2006 14:49 (twenty years ago)

Could we change up the stats? Some things were just silly (holds), but a nice mix of stathead and traditional stats would be nice.

Erick Dampier is better than Shaq (miloaukerman), Monday, 9 January 2006 23:55 (twenty years ago)

What's so silly about Holds?

I would like to add Blown Saves as well.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 00:05 (twenty years ago)

Speaking of silly!

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 00:19 (twenty years ago)

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 00:37 (twenty years ago)

Hey we need more negative pitching stats!

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 00:38 (twenty years ago)

That's it, I'm going to add you to the list R@p0s@.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 00:40 (twenty years ago)

dude, like you have to ask

Stormy Davis (diamond), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 01:05 (twenty years ago)

i'm in

j blount (papa la bas), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 02:35 (twenty years ago)

Is there a page on Yahoo that lists all the stats we can choose from? Is there a way to create our own stats?

If we set max and min for IP (or starts?) then we partially eliminate the need for both rate and counting pitching stats.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 02:36 (twenty years ago)

i'm in! and hi gygax!

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 04:23 (twenty years ago)

list o' stats - http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/baseball/brules/brules-13.html

I'd prefer to eliminate non-statistical categories like games started and quirky ones like IBBs given up, and I think we had separate categories for OBP, SLG and OPS, etc..

Erick Dampier is better than Shaq (miloaukerman), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 04:29 (twenty years ago)

I don't want to step on any toes, but if I were setting up a league and choosing from each, I'd start with:

Batting Average (Rotisserie, Head-to-Head Only);
Slugging Percentage (Rotisserie, Head-to-Head Only);
On-Base Percentage (Rotisserie, Head-to-Head Only);
Fielding Percentage (Rotisserie, Head-to-Head Only);
Runs Scored;
Home Runs;
Runs Batted In;
Stolen Bases;
Caught Stealing;
Total Bases;

Plus a couple more statistical categories, but I don't know which work best-
Putouts;
Assists;
Errors

Earned Run Average (Rotisserie, Head-to-Head Only);
WHIP Ratio (Rotisserie, Head-to-Head Only);
Strikeouts per Nine Innings (Rotisserie, Head-to-Head Only);
Strikeout to Walk Ratio (Rotisserie, Head-to-Head Only);
Wins;
Losses;
Complete Games;
Shutouts;
Saves;
Home Runs;
Walks;
Strikeouts;
Stolen Bases Allowed;
Total Bases Allowed;

The service we use for my local leagues combines some stats to make it easier - (two times wins) minus losses, SBs minus CS - rather than doubling up on categories. Maybe Yahoo will introduce those in the new rules.

Erick Dampier is better than Shaq (miloaukerman), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 04:34 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, we should definitely get rid of the "doubling up". Using winning percentage and stolen base percentage would accomplish similar goals, but I like your way because it combines rates with counting.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 04:52 (twenty years ago)

Losses;
Home Runs;
Walks;
Stolen Bases Allowed;
Total Bases Allowed;

You people do this again, I don't want any complains about my light pitching staff!

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 05:23 (twenty years ago)

You can't have fantasy baseball without figuring pitchers' losses in somehow. It just ain't right.

I don't really like Total Bases Allowed, but it gets as close as possible to opponents' OPS, since they don't offer that one.

Stolen Bases Allowed is a legit one, IMO - part of the pitcher's job is to hold runners, no? I think Neyer even used that as an argument against Greg Maddux being the best of his era before last season. I could understand ditching it, though, since it's unfair for that one stat to count as much as other stats.

Home runs and walks are totally legit - you need the three true outcomes for both pitchers and hitters.

Erick Dampier is better than Shaq (miloaukerman), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 06:01 (twenty years ago)

He's not saying they aren't legit, he's saying he (or any of us) could dominate in those categories by loading up on relievers instead of starters.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 06:12 (twenty years ago)

No, that one backfired on me the year before. It was hitters I loaded up on.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 06:15 (twenty years ago)

I thought I was already on the list for my NO FIELDING PERCENTAGE campaign from '04!

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 14:42 (twenty years ago)

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 19:49 (twenty years ago)

I seriously doubt I spent more than 2 hours (not including the draft) managing my team last year. And that's probably way high.

Erick Dampier is better than Shaq (miloaukerman), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 19:53 (twenty years ago)

And where, praytell, did that leave you?

c(''c) (Leee), Wednesday, 11 January 2006 20:16 (twenty years ago)

Above average. If not for the damnable holds, I'd have been in great shape.

Haikunym (Haikunym), Monday, 8 May 2006 16:58 (twenty years ago)

so far i am leading my league in fewest strikeouts and caught stealingz, but also have the fewest hits. i don't think i understand this game :'(

since i am playing rotisserie, leading in errors or ibb is worth the same number of points (eight, since it's an 8-person league) as leading in hr. i don't really understand how to improve my roster? like, is it pointless to go out and cherry-pick the guys who have done best in certain areas (completed games, stolen bases, whatever), and replace my current dudes with them? cuz it's not like those stats will count for me, nor do they guarantee that they'll keep on producing numbahs. i feel like it'd be smarter for me to not try and change the roster to catch up with the guys who have 300 hits and whatnot, and instead try to snag a lead in the categories where the difference is a lot smaller. i just have NO IDEA HOW TO DO THIS HELP :(

INSANE CLOWN FOSSE (Adrian Langston), Monday, 8 May 2006 17:19 (twenty years ago)

INSANE CLOWN FOSSE (Adrian Langston), Thursday, 11 May 2006 15:51 (twenty years ago)

Depends on what stats you want boosted.

Berkman's been mashing, so he has to start.

c(''c) (Leee), Thursday, 11 May 2006 16:03 (twenty years ago)

well, i am dead last in runs, hits and homers, so i guess i should be wanting a boost in those areas. the thing is, i have too much depth at 1b. i COULD start berkman at OF, but that would mean losing ichiro or beltran. probably ichiro, but he's my best guy in terms of stolen bases and overall hits. :/

INSANE CLOWN FOSSE (Adrian Langston), Friday, 12 May 2006 21:22 (twenty years ago)

Trade one of your first basemen for a real third baseman. Ty Wigg is a mirage.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Friday, 12 May 2006 21:25 (twenty years ago)

You also might consider trading Jose Reyes, since Ichiro and Beltran should give you plenty of stolen bases. You're weak at 3b, ss, and c, and yet berkman and reyes are sitting on the pine.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Friday, 12 May 2006 21:28 (twenty years ago)

also, i just dropped griff a couple days ago... right before he comes back and hits a HR :'(. should i pick him up again???

INSANE CLOWN FOSSE (Adrian Langston), Friday, 12 May 2006 21:28 (twenty years ago)

Sure. Drop Castillo and get Griffey. But he still rides the bench on a team with Giambi, Berkman, Beltran and Ichiro.

Castillo shouldn't see the field on a team with Wigs, Weeks and Iguchi.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Friday, 12 May 2006 21:29 (twenty years ago)

ooh, thanks.

INSANE CLOWN FOSSE (Adrian Langston), Friday, 12 May 2006 21:32 (twenty years ago)

wait, trade reyes? he was my replacement for Cabrera! who should i replace him with?

casey blake's sitting out there in free agency right now. good enough replacement for wiggy?

i just benched ichiro for berkman... i am weak at catcher, but the options out there seem pretty shitty overall. i'm not sure who i should pursue.

INSANE CLOWN FOSSE (Adrian Langston), Friday, 12 May 2006 21:40 (twenty years ago)

Cabrera and Reyes are both weak options in my opinion, because your team already has two very good stolen base guys in Beltran and Ichiro. Unlike those guys, Reyes doesn't add much more than SBs (although he has been getting more walks this year). Cabrera is actually a better option on your team than Reyes because he's a bit more well-rounded.

What I would do is try to trade Reyes for a SS with some pop (Nomar? Jeter?), or for a solid 3b guy.

Blake is a much better 3b than Wigs, imo. If your league has a DL slot you could stick Rowand in it and pick Blake up for free.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Friday, 12 May 2006 21:50 (twenty years ago)

i am weak at catcher, but the options out there seem pretty shitty overall. i'm not sure who i should pursue.

Don't worry too much about catcher. Estrada has been perfectly fine so far. If you can get a Victor Martinez or a Joe Mauer or a Josh Willingham, sure, pull the trigger, but catcher is the least important position on your team.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Friday, 12 May 2006 21:53 (twenty years ago)

Don't undersell the importance of a catcher's intangibles!

Meanwhile, over at AcidMotherPendletonville... Someone please trade me for Matt Cain! I can't bear cutting him.

c(''c) (Leee), Friday, 12 May 2006 21:58 (twenty years ago)

i'm trading cabrera for felipe lopez rn, and am trying to trade konerko and reyes for schilling (lol). getting curt would be a major coup, cuz i can start him as an rp.

c(''c) (Leee), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 00:06 (twenty years ago)

i think that has been the trend this year: pick up a hot pitcher right before he shits the bed. at least i've noticed it w/ guys i've picked up and guys i've wanted to pick up that someone else got.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 00:23 (twenty years ago)

Yup - I just picked up Ramon Ramirez today and he gives up 3 runs while getting only 1 out. Thank god he doesn't show on my roster until tomorrow! But now I'm reconsidering my decision :/

INSANE CLOWN FOSSE (Adrian Langston), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 02:21 (twenty years ago)

Hey Barry, what's your price for Kinsler?

c(''c) (Leee), Monday, 29 May 2006 17:57 (nineteen years ago)

I need more speed and walks.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Monday, 29 May 2006 18:42 (nineteen years ago)

Hey Barry, what's your price for Kinsler?

Magic beans that will get Sheets and Harden off the DL and back in my rotation.

I probably owe you one for "taking" Buchholz off my hands, but I honestly don't know what I'll be needing until I know when those guys will be healthy. And when that happens, I'll probably be looking to deal some pitching, not hitting.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Monday, 29 May 2006 19:25 (nineteen years ago)

my team is terrible

- maddux, mulder, and blanton are useless
- dunn and giambi have gone in the tank
- abreu needs more HR
- chavez will never have that "breakout year" and will forever remain a 27hr/90rbi/.275 guy
- frank thomas is awful
- if i combined khalil greene and david eckstein i'd have a pretty good player
- javy lopez needs to get back on the juice
- my entire relief corps seems to be on the DL
- my third outfield spot is now on its fifth different player (xavier nady) after the failed jason michaels/preston wilson/jeff davanon/nate malouth experiments.

just about the only guys who have been steady are halladay, crede, biggio, and escobar. take that for what it's worth.

gear (gear), Monday, 29 May 2006 20:43 (nineteen years ago)

i'm fielding offers for anyone on my team (except abreu and halladay, i need them)

gear (gear), Monday, 29 May 2006 20:46 (nineteen years ago)

My entire team is slumping but at least they're doing it as a team.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 29 May 2006 21:08 (nineteen years ago)

Good luck on Nady, he lost his starting job (hence why I dropped him).

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Monday, 29 May 2006 21:11 (nineteen years ago)

Complaining that your team is terrible when it's been in the top five for most of the season, C/D?

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Monday, 29 May 2006 21:51 (nineteen years ago)

- dunn and giambi have gone in the tank

yeah, those 29 homeruns must be killing you dude.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Monday, 29 May 2006 23:26 (nineteen years ago)

dunn has hit .198 over the past month (albeit with eight HR) and giambi has been pretty atrocious lately. my team was playing above its head for awhile, now they're coming back to earth.

gear (gear), Tuesday, 30 May 2006 06:25 (nineteen years ago)
