CentreSportsCenter had a bit yesterday about how the Yanqui pitching was already in trouble. I didn't bother to watch because, yes, Moose and Unit are older than dirtt.

From a Prospectus live roundtable of last night's stomp in Oakland:

Steven Goldman (7:17:08 PM PST): Bernie Williams hasn't batted yet, but I just want to say... He's KILLING the Yankees!

Steven Goldman (7:17:19 PM PST): ...With his guitar playing!

Steven Goldman (7:32:30 PM PST): If George Steinbrenner had owned the Yankees in 1951, Joe DiMaggio would have played over Mickey Mantle in 1952, 1953, and 1954.

Jay Jaffe (7:40:33 PM PST): if there's one thing I want to see this season, more than a World Series for either the Dodgers or Yanks, it's Larry Bowa creamed by a Sheffield foul ball.

The Daily News, at the bottom of the article, asks, "Why?"

Observers were befuddled that Johnson would file a lawsuit over what amounts to chump change for the millionaire - all while risking unwanted publicity on an intensely private matter.

Because he's a highly competitive athlete. It's not about the money, it's about winning something that Randy feels he should win. That's why he's a great pitcher. It's the same thing that drives players to cheat with drugs and corked bats and spitballs. These athletes have an intense desire to win, so intense that it often clouds their judgement. They put down others do they appears even greater. If you want to win, you want this kind of player on your team. But you need to accept all the baggage that goes with it.

Oh, Pinto...

awww, SS (I hope of Huston Street as well).

That was worth staying up for -- or rather, I slept early and woke up in time to see most of the 2:00-4:30 am replay. (YES skips innings on the rerun -- they probably had some Yankeeography of Luis Sojo to get to -- and they cut it off about 10 seconds after Scutaro's hit, w/o a replay). The YESbots were amazed the A's would bunt the winning run to 2nd with no outs cuz, y'know, they're a Moneyball team.

This thread is less fun with no Dahlem telling us to fuck off.

Whereas Jeter doing the same thing in the top of the 7th was perfectly understandable, because that's how Baseball Is Played, The Yankee Way.

How does that still count as a "hitting streak"? Isn't it more of a "lack of failure to hit" streak?

ojitarian (ojitarian), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 21:12 (nineteen years ago)

a hitting streak is determined by at-bats, not plate-appearances.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 21:17 (nineteen years ago)

Although I do favour the phrase "lack of failure streak".

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 21:35 (nineteen years ago)

JN (GA): It's become a stathead meme that Jeter's improved defensive numbers are a result of having A-Rod at third base. How exactly does that work? How is it different from blaming his past stats on A-Rod's predecessors?

Steven Goldman: I don't necessarily buy any of the discussion, from Jeter's improvement to A-Rod's role in it... The Fielding Bible had Jeter sucking as much as ever last year and I tend to buy into their arguments.

The argument about Jeter, from my point of view, is that his positioning could have corrected many of his problems. He lacks a great first step but there's nothing wrong with his arm. He could have done what Cal Ripken did, back up a bit knowing that his arm could make up for the lost time on grounders. If having A-Rod around gave him the confidence to alter his positioning a little bit then in that sense having A-Rod helped. That doesn't make A-Rod responsible for the improvement necessarily.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 14 September 2006 18:49 (nineteen years ago)

wtf is the difference between at-bats and plate appearances? what a stupid game :(

I found myself agreeing with him right up to the point where he started fishing for sympathy by telling us how pretty he is.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 13:32 (nineteen years ago)

""You [expletive] call those hits?" Giambi said, according to SI. "You had two [expletive] dinkers to right field and a ball that bounced over the third baseman! Look at how many pitches you missed!"

So they were outs? I'm confused Jason Giambi. Also I am pretty sure that Giambi uh took a fair amount of abuse when he was playing badly. I could be wrong, but I think I remember a few people being down on him.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 13:34 (nineteen years ago)

Admittedly the irony is that Rodriguez ISN'T playing badly at all. People is just dumb.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 13:35 (nineteen years ago)

A hit's a hit, for the love of fuck. Just because you didn't smack the stitches off the damn ball don't mean it counts less. And just because the Giambino can't go to right field anymore w/out a bullpen cart doesn't mean he should shit on the team's best all-around hitter.

Jimmy Mod's Champion Erotic Fantasy Team 2006 (The Famous Jimmy Mod), Thursday, 21 September 2006 10:23 (nineteen years ago)

My first thought was "Mussina is just as good-looking, punk."

So who is better equipped to knock off the Empire in the LDS, Minn or Det? I'm thinking Twins.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 21 September 2006 13:12 (nineteen years ago)

Assuming Gardy doesn't have any brainfarts like he did the last time the Twinkies faced off w/ the Yanqs, then yeah, Twins.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 21 September 2006 13:22 (nineteen years ago)

Let's see, Minnesota has a better offense, the best pitcher in baseball, one of the top two or three closers in the league (provided Gardy doesn't try to get three inning saves out of him or whatever it was that led to the Game 2 meltdown in 2004), doesn't have Sean Casey and Neifi Perez in its lineup, and is by far the hotter team right now.

I'm thinking Twins as well.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 21 September 2006 13:35 (nineteen years ago)

I would much rather the A's face the Tigers than the Twins in a short series so GO TIGERS!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 21 September 2006 13:47 (nineteen years ago)

of course, Alex, if the A's pass the Yanks for best record (only 3-1/2 behind -- what was the season series result?), you'd still get the Twins if they are the WC.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 21 September 2006 15:04 (nineteen years ago)

A's won the season series with the Yanks. 3 1/2 games is a lot though.
