Brett Boone hung it up today at the Mets camp, and Troy Percival (going into the 2nd year of $15M/2yr. contract) got lit up by non-roster invitees and is pondering the same.

Who's next:
Sammy Sosa?
Rafael Palmeiro?
The Rocket?

and Rickey finally called it quits, right?

He's a special council for Mets' hitters in ST, innny?

Jimmy Mod: The Prettiest Flower In The Pond (The Famous Jimmy Mod), Thursday, 2 March 2006 17:37 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, he's supposed to groom Jose Reyes into the next Rickey, but of course he's ready to step into the lineup himself when asked.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 2 March 2006 18:12 (nineteen years ago)

Rickey would actually get on base. I think the Mets should go for it. Remember Timo Perez? He was a fast dude too...

There was some article I read a couple of weeks ago that Sosa was contemplating retirement. Sosa has already turned down a paycheck from the Nationals.

Percival also had arm pain and has left Tigers camp.

I think it is safe to say that Clemens will be playing this year, most likely for the Astros while taking April off.

Is Urbina still in the big house?

PHOENIX -- The focus this week has been on the future of Roger Clemens, but Al Leiter, who has had a distinguished career, said he probably will hang 'em up after the World Baseball Classic.

"This could be the last thing I do," Leiter told MLB.com on Monday as Team USA held one more practice session at Chase Field before opening pool play against Mexico at 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday. "Very much so."

wait a minute ... Al Leiter is pitching for Team USA? How did I not notice this? Did Jesse Orosco have other plans?

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 7 March 2006 18:39 (nineteen years ago)

he was a late addition after some other pitcher pulled out last week.

This is worse than Steve McNair playing in the NFL Pro Bowl!!

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- The three-way battle to replace Doug Mirabelli as Boston's backup catcher has been reduced to two with Tuesday afternoon's news that veteran John Flaherty, who broke in to the Major Leagues with the Red Sox back in 1992 and returned to the organization last December, has decided to retire.

"It is with mixed emotions that I am announcing my retirement from Major League Baseball today," said Flaherty in a press release issued by the Red Sox. "I am grateful to Theo Epstein and Ben Cherington for giving me the opportunity to play on a world class team and my appreciation is not diminished because of the judgment call I am making today.

"I started my career with the Red Sox and proceeded to live out my boyhood dreams in Major League Baseball. Thank you to all of my teammates, coaches, managers and fans for making the ride so much fun."

he couldn't catch wake's knuckleball so he would have been cut anyway. i guess they're just going to ride varitek into the ground? the other two guys they had in camp were walk ons i think.

two weeks pass...
Bagwell to start season on DL, says he may not play again...

http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news;_ylt=AoBI_IodVuoeLGzzLQ3__JERvLYF?slug=ap-astros-bagwell&prov=ap&type=lgns

It looks like this day was coming for the past couple of years, but I think Bagwell has finally hit the wall. I was wondering who would be done first between him and The Big Hurt, as both have been the walking wounded for the past few seasons.

I personally am sorry to see Bagwell end up like this as I always liked him as a player and what a crazy batting stance, especially before he changed it because of his bum shoulder.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Sunday, 26 March 2006 22:40 (nineteen years ago)

marquis grissom retired.

maura (maura), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 16:58 (nineteen years ago)

Marquis was part of the worst trade John Schuerholz ever made. Shame he never got a second swing with the Braves, like Pendleton and Jordan.

We forgot about Larry Walker already...

one month passes...
Alex Gonzalez:

http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news?slug=philliesgonzalez&prov=st&type=lgns

The link in the story leads to the player profile of the other Alex Gonzalez. Maybe Yahoo will catch the mistake by the time you read this.

I'll remember him as the perpetually underachieving and K-prone Blue Jays shortstop, but for most people his legacy is secure as one of the key goats in the Steve Bartman game.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 21 May 2006 19:50 (nineteen years ago)

until now i never knew which alex gonzalez the cubs had.

one month passes...
Steve Karsay the day after his last A's appearance.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 21 June 2006 14:56 (eighteen years ago)

It's a good story, it was his first win in 3 years!

He went to Beane asking off the team and Beane said, "Let's just wait through the weekend..." So what do you know, a 17-inning game in LA and Karsay comes out on the winning end and goes out in style!

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Wednesday, 21 June 2006 15:09 (eighteen years ago)

Wins are just a counting stat ;)

mattbot (mattbot), Wednesday, 21 June 2006 16:48 (eighteen years ago)

Meanwhile, Roger Clemens is coming back out of retirement. Again. He truly is a "rolling retiree."

Bill Mueller's season is in jeopardy -- and his career might be as well. The Los Angeles third baseman is scheduled to be at Dodger Stadium today to have his right knee evaluated by the team's medical personnel.

Mueller, 35, has been at home in Phoenix rehabilitating from surgery on his right knee more than a month ago. It was his third operation on the knee in three years, and recovery has been slow.

``He's got degenerative, arthritic changes in his knee,'' Dodgers trainer Stan Johnston said. ``There is cumulative damage from all the procedures.''
