So far, Jermaine Dye on track for 1.000 BA, 1.000 OBP, 1.000 SLG, 162 RBIs, 162 SBs.

Also: Anyone who picked Cleveland to win the AL Central feeling a bit nervous now that CC has re-strained the same muscle that kept him out for six starts last year?

Haikunym (Haikunym), Monday, 3 April 2006 15:52 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I just downgraded em to 92 wins from 93.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 3 April 2006 15:55 (twenty years ago)

Your rapier-like wit cuts me to the quick.

Did you see the item about the Revenge of Jason Bartlett?

You mean JACK BLACK IN UPCOMING FILM NACHO LIBRE LOOKS LIKE NICK JOHNSON WITH MOUSTACHE - Nick's been staching since last year.

TOUCHE

Jimmy Mod: My theme is DEATH (The Famous Jimmy Mod), Monday, 3 April 2006 16:28 (twenty years ago)

THANK YOU

Danny Graves relieved CC? Christmas. On the plus side - 2 BB & 1 hit in .2 IP means he's in mid-season form!

Also: Rey-Rey & the Dook are a combined 0-for-2 so far.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 3 April 2006 16:30 (twenty years ago)

but soriano walks and steals second in his debut! he's both sabermetric AND joemorganocentric!

The overcast weather in my neck of the woods is harsh any potential Opening Day buzz. Being @ work doesn't help, either.

Suzuki walked onto Safeco Field for a two-hour workout sporting pant legs that ended at the knees and showed blue socks pulled high, like Moyer. Suzuki had the same look leading Japan to the title of the World Baseball Classic last month. He said he intends to wear his socks high all season. "Old school, brother," Suzuki said

c(''c) (Leee), Monday, 3 April 2006 17:17 (twenty years ago)

I really should have taken today off. Poor planning.

I have mixed emotions about the weather -- on the one hand, sucks for baseball (and really too bad that what was turning out to be a great Cle/Chi season opener got ruined) -- on the other hand, Brandon McCarthy rain delay vulture win catapults me to 1st place in one of my leagues!

Stormy Davis (diamond), Monday, 3 April 2006 17:28 (twenty years ago)

anybody else having a hard time getting the audio to work on MLB.com? I had the Mets game going fine, but then, when I tried to switch over to Boston/Texas, everything stopped working. Now I can't get any game to stream. Curses.

chocolate kuegelhopf (Garrett Martin), Monday, 3 April 2006 17:44 (twenty years ago)

Opening day and Nomar is headed for the DL with some strained muscle.

Big Papi doesn't hit cheap dingers, when they are gone, they are long gone. I think Millwood about broke his neck tracking that one.

Aaron Harang proved that being the Red's ace is not really that much of a complement.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Monday, 3 April 2006 22:46 (twenty years ago)

I like that there are two pitchers (at least) who currently have INFINITE ERAs. Sweet.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 3 April 2006 22:57 (twenty years ago)

GET ONE OUT

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Monday, 3 April 2006 23:01 (twenty years ago)

ouch Zito

Stormy Davis (diamond), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 01:49 (twenty years ago)

served up a fat meatball and A-Rod went boom

Stormy Davis (diamond), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 01:50 (twenty years ago)

...and then Big Frank launches one in his first Oakland at-bat

Stormy Davis (diamond), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 02:00 (twenty years ago)

The fact that Giambi is playing 1B and Bernie Williams in DH-ing seems to speak volumes about Bernie's defense. Is he that worthless in the field? Could he be a worse 1B than Giambi? I'd switch those two up.

Zito's got a healthy 47.25 ERA to start off the year, I'm so glad I chose to start him today.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 02:08 (twenty years ago)

don't worry, a no-hitter or two and he'll be back down to a respectable number.

in my other league, I had both Zambrano and Harang facing off against each other and they BOTH got rocked. maybe it's not a good idea to start pitchers on opening day...

Stormy Davis (diamond), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 02:12 (twenty years ago)

A lot of team debut HRs today:

Frank Thomas (1st for the A's)
Mike Piazza (1st for the Padres)
Kenji Johjima (1st for the Mariners)
Roberto Petagine (1st for the Mariners, a pinch hit HR at that)
Scott Hatteberg (1st for the Reds)
Mike Lowell (1st for the Red Sox)

They should really start testing the players, this is getting out of hand.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 02:22 (twenty years ago)

Walks killed Zito. THROW STRIKES NEXT TIME!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 02:22 (twenty years ago)

Now I am hoping it rains RIGHT NOW to rob Yankees of the game, but it appears that Mother Nature is not on my side. :(

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 02:23 (twenty years ago)

you forgot Thome last nite, Steve!

Stormy Davis (diamond), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 02:25 (twenty years ago)

I did indeed.

Matsui just made it 11-1 with a 3 run dinger off Saarlos, things are UGLAY in Oakland.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 02:30 (twenty years ago)

Today has been a good day for hitting!

Pitching not so much.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 02:48 (twenty years ago)

"Today has been a good day for hitting!
Pitching not so much."

One of the few pitching duels was in Colorado of all places.

The Cardinals have added Aaron Miles to make it an all Mini-Me middle infield in Saint Louis.

It was good to see Scott Rolen, Frank Thomas and Jim Thome let it be known that they were back in business. It will be interesting to see who can stay off the DL.

"We went with our normal offensive output," cracked first baseman Lance Berkman. "I always tell the guys (pitchers) if they want to win the game, throw a shutout."

Earl Nash (earlnash), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 04:33 (twenty years ago)

One of the few pitching duels was in Colorado of all places.

That game featured three of the most devestating sinker pitchers in the majors:
Brandon Webb
Jason Jennings
Brian Fuentes

Of the 17 balls hit into play off of him, Webb allowed only 2 fly balls versus 15 groundballs.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 05:26 (twenty years ago)

really? i did not know that.

kinda cool.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 11:54 (twenty years ago)

Still batting 1.000 after opening day
Xavier Nady, Mets

brianiast (briania), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 13:19 (twenty years ago)

Sorry. Still on target for a perfect season:

Jermaine Dye, White Sox 3 1 3 1
Xavier Nady, Mets 4 1 4 1
Marlon Anderson, Nationals 1 1 1 0
Nate McLouth, Pirates 1 0 1 0
Jeff Cirillo, Brewers 1 0 1 2
Jerry Hairston, Cubs 1 1 1 0
Rich Aurilia, Reds 1 0 1 1
Chris Denorfia, Reds 1 1 1 0
Albert Pujols, Cardinals 2 3 2 4
Julio Lugo, Devil Rays 2 2 2 0
Ramon Hernandez, Orioles 3 0 3 2
Jason Smith, Rockies 1 0 1 0
Roberto Petagine, Mariners 1 1 1 1
Pete Orr, Braves 1 0 1 0
Hideki Matsui, Yankees 4 2 4 4

Of the six regulars on the list, perhaps only Albert will take it all the way. That 322-homer pace and 4.000 slugging percentage will be hard to maintain, though.

brianiast (briania), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 13:44 (twenty years ago)

JERMAINE DYE THE DREAM IS OVER

Haikunym (Haikunym), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 17:43 (twenty years ago)

So I'm listening to the Cleveland-Chicago game on MLB.com, and one of the Sox announcers just basically fellated Selig on air. Who is this dude?

chocolate kuegelhopf (Garrett Martin), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 18:22 (twenty years ago)

Either Hawk Harrelson or Darrin Jackson, I think, but probably Harrselson.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 18:37 (twenty years ago)

Hawk & Jackson don't do radio, THANK CHRIST IN HEAVEN. It's likely Ed Farmer is the one on Selig's jock. Otherwise, Chris Singleton.

brianiast (briania), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 18:51 (twenty years ago)

Rough afternoon for Freddy An. Garcia, not helped by the Boone-on-Boone two-run double after his exit.

brianiast (briania), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 19:03 (twenty years ago)

Jeez, now a solo shot. Big day for Bleepin'.

brianiast (briania), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 19:19 (twenty years ago)

CHRIS Singleton? John's son? Formerly middling pipsqueaky OF?

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 19:21 (twenty years ago)

Now middling, pipsqueaky radio raconteur.

brianiast (briania), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 19:26 (twenty years ago)

oh man, that had to be Ed Farmer ... god he's the worst

Stormy Davis (diamond), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 19:41 (twenty years ago)

john singleton the director? not possible. if you mean ken, no relation there, either.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 19:46 (twenty years ago)

GAH

I meant Skippy.

- B. Arroyo homered to deep left

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 16:19 (twenty years ago)

Why is Rich Aurilia:

1. Playing first base today
2. Hitting cleanup today

Also, why is it working.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 16:58 (twenty years ago)

He took a ride in the wayback machine back to 2001.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 17:25 (twenty years ago)

It's working because they are playing the Cubs.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 17:31 (twenty years ago)

Wow - the Tigers are looking pretty good!

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 18:39 (twenty years ago)

Tigers-Reds World Series, book it. Rust Belt Rumble!

mattbot (mattbot), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 18:49 (twenty years ago)

Just how bad is the Indian's bullpen, to leave Cliff Lee in after this mess (only 67 pitches through 5 innings but still):

Chi White Sox Inning Summary

- T. Iguchi singled to center
- J. Thome hit by pitch, T. Iguchi to second
- P. Konerko walked, T. Iguchi to third, J. Thome to second
- R. Mackowiak grounded into fielder's choice, T. Iguchi out at home, J. Thome to third, P. Konerko to second
- A.J. Pierzynski hit by pitch, J. Thome scored, P. Konerko to third, R. Mackowiak to second

Rollins' 38 game hitting streak ends.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 6 April 2006 21:17 (twenty years ago)

The dream is over.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 6 April 2006 21:20 (twenty years ago)

I never thought it made sense to have streaks stretching over more than one season anyway.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 6 April 2006 22:19 (twenty years ago)

OMG you have gone over to the dark side, come back sweet Barry come baaaaaaaaaack

Haikunym (Haikunym), Friday, 7 April 2006 00:46 (twenty years ago)

Tim Salmon has also come back from the dead with a couple of early HRs. I figured he was doing radio for the Angels not still playing for them.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Friday, 7 April 2006 00:56 (twenty years ago)

Yesterday's walk to Eric Hinske was the first time that Carlos Silva had issued two walks in a game since Sept. 24, 2004, at Cleveland -- a streak of 28 starts.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Friday, 7 April 2006 20:13 (twenty years ago)

Hinske of all people. tisk

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Friday, 7 April 2006 22:15 (twenty years ago)

One of those was a four-pitch walk -- from a guy who walked nine people all of last season!

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 8 April 2006 01:10 (twenty years ago)

two months pass...
I don't bet on baseball (except when Im in Vega$, so like once a year)... but I do like to check out the odds.

Check out these odds today:

Felix Hernandez vs. Brett Tomko @ LA: Tomko's a -105 favorite.
Last 3 starts:
Tomko: 0-3 w/ 10.29 ERA & 2.00 WHIP
Felix: 3-0 w/ 2.86 ERA & 0.96 WHIP

Francisco Liriano vs. Roger Clemens @ HOU: Clemens is a -115 favorite.
Last 3 starts:
Liriano: 2-1 w/ 2.25 ERA & 0.90 WHIP
Clemens: he looked pretty good in his A/AA starts but got lit up @ AAA. he got the loss when Mexico eliminated Team USA from the WBC.

Eric Milton vs. Pedro Martinez @ NYM: Martinez is a -230 favorite.
Last 3 starts:
Milton: 1-1 w/ 2.70 ERA & 1.06 WHIP
Pedro: 1-2 w/ 5.29 ERA & 1.47 WHIP

Moreover, the Reds' insane Road record (22-14) is actually better than the Mets Home record (21-15).

Anthony Reyes vs. Freddy Garcia @ CWS: Garcia's a -155 favorite.
Last 3 starts:
Reyes: 1-0 w/ 2.25 ERA & 0.92 WHIP
Garcia: 1-1 w/ 6.86 ERA & 1.58 WHIP
Yeah I know what the White Sox have done in the last 2 games, maybe they're out of gas.

This could be a sweet little underdog parlay.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 22 June 2006 15:46 (nineteen years ago)

If I'm calc-ing right, a $10 bet would pay $53.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 22 June 2006 16:03 (nineteen years ago)

Hmmm... Milton.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 22 June 2006 17:47 (nineteen years ago)

haha, now I know why I don't gamble!

But back to AL vs. NL... this year's interleague play is showing that the NL isn't worthy of cleaning the AL's cleats.

2006 interleague record: 103 AL wins vs. 64 NL wins.
Only three AL teams have losing interleague records: TOR (4-8), CLE (4-8) & LAA (4-8).
Only two NL teams have winning interleague records: NYM (5-4) and COL (7-2).
