Is this guy the worst owner ever (post-free agency anyway)?

Bud Selig wants to dip his balls in it

This latest "garage sale" (as Keith Hernandez called it yesterday) is entirely defensible in baseball rebuilding terms.

Except for the fact that his team's payroll is almost less than his team's revenue sharing reimbursement.

Yeah, there's that angle too. Rev sharing broke.

I don't mind the firesale (as you say those things are often very sensible in baseball rebuilding terms although in Florida's case with fan interest being what it is it gets a little more complicated) but threatening to trade Willis AND Cabrera and trying to hold it over the city's head and having a payroll that is half the lowest in the league and nearly half as much as you get gratis from revenue sharing =s you are a Grade A Scumbag. Not to mention he already did more than his part to fuck up baseball completely in Montreal before he ever even got to south Florida.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 10 April 2006 16:24 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, the firesale is defensible if you're rebuilding the team, but it's indefensible if you're trying to punish Floridians for not buying a new stadium for the team.

The whole Florida-Montreal-Boston musical chairs fiasco might have been the shadiest transaction in baseball history.

I mean, you really have to separate the excellence of Larry Beinfest's maneuvering from the shittiness that caused it.
