Yikes, it's begun. Let's see how many Big Thinkers vote for Ty Wigginton and Chris Shelton.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 1 May 2006 13:23 (nineteen years ago)

Hey now - Shelton was hot shit in the 2nd half of last year, Spanky! He'd be getting votes for a half-season of excellence AND MORE!

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 1 May 2006 13:36 (nineteen years ago)

Regardless, Brandon Arroyo is gonna start for the NL.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 1 May 2006 13:41 (nineteen years ago)

haha

Yeah, it was unfair to lump Shelton with Wiggy, but he still likely doesn't deserve a start.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 1 May 2006 13:48 (nineteen years ago)

The AL Morbius All-Stars:

C - Toby Hall
1B - Phil Nevin
2B - Ty Wigginton
3B - Joe Crede
SS - Orlando Cabrera
OF - Alexis Rios
OF - Casey Blake
OF - Nick Swisher
DH - Chris Shelton
SP - Mike Maroth

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 1 May 2006 13:52 (nineteen years ago)

And for the NL:

C - Paul LoDuca
1B - Prince Fielder
2B - Brandon Phillips
3B - Garrett Atkins
SS - Hanley Ramirez
OF - Brad Hawpe
OF - Xavier Nady
OF - Josh Willingham
DH - Craig Wilson
SP - BRANDON OMG SO DREAMY

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 1 May 2006 13:55 (nineteen years ago)

Kruk or HR will present those in a week

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 1 May 2006 13:59 (nineteen years ago)

Some of those guys have a pretty decent chance of deserving the spot.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Monday, 1 May 2006 14:58 (nineteen years ago)

A starting spot? I don't see a single one that's defensible for a vote (assuming that a hot month or three doesn't make you an All-Star), except possibly LoDuca because of the rather sorry depth at NL catching.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 1 May 2006 15:06 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, not as starters, but Swisher & Shelton & Hawpe & Craig W could probably make the team. Tho I imagine they'll pick Jack W over Craig W as the 'Rats rep.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 1 May 2006 15:10 (nineteen years ago)

As a starter, probably not.

I wonder who will represent the Padres? Hoffman? Linebrink?

polyphonic (polyphonic), Monday, 1 May 2006 15:24 (nineteen years ago)

Barfield?

Haikunym (Haikunym), Monday, 1 May 2006 16:10 (nineteen years ago)

Whoever gets picked for the Padres will not deserve to be there, that's for sure. It won't be a Lance Carter-level bad pick, but someone who deserves to be there will get skipped.

Peavy should be there but he decided to suck at pitching this spring.

Overreacting based on small sample sizes is fun for the whole family.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Monday, 1 May 2006 18:22 (nineteen years ago)

Ha ha! I love how "small sample size" has become the "oh wrinklepaws" of ILBB this week!

this week

You don't read my posts very often, do you?

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Monday, 1 May 2006 18:59 (nineteen years ago)

I treasure all your posts.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 1 May 2006 19:11 (nineteen years ago)

I see nothing wrong with voting someone in based on first-half performance (first-month might be going too far). It's an exhibition game, vote for anyone you want to see play, good or bad.

I plan to vote exclusively for people on my roto teams.

milo z (mlp), Monday, 1 May 2006 23:31 (nineteen years ago)

"Exhibition game"??? THIS TIME IT COUNTS.

c(''c) (Leee), Monday, 1 May 2006 23:40 (nineteen years ago)

haha

Stormy Davis (diamond), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 00:41 (nineteen years ago)

vote for anyone you want to see play

Vote for stars, ideally.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 12:11 (nineteen years ago)

I dunno - I kinda want to see Jorge Julio in there.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 12:18 (nineteen years ago)

No, Duaner!!!

Going solely by this morning's RARP (ie, Runs Above Replacement by Position, no defense), the leaders are mostly familiar:

AL
1b Giambi
2b Roberts
ss Jeter/Tejada
3b Glaus
of Wells, Swisher, Blake
c Martinez
dh Hafner

NL
1b Pujols
2b Vidro
ss Vizquel
3b Ensberg
of C. Lee, Dunn, Abreu (Andruw if you insist on a proper CF)
c AUSMUS!!!

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 15:26 (nineteen years ago)

four weeks pass...
The Magic of Jeter leads all AL players... Bonds 12th among NL OFs (Aaron Rowand 10th). I don't see the totals listed anywhere on mlb.com, tho.

Rolen leads at 3B -- I hafta say, as a Wright fan, it should probably be Ensberg or Cabrera!

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 31 May 2006 18:09 (nineteen years ago)

thome should be the dh starter

gear (gear), Wednesday, 31 May 2006 18:18 (nineteen years ago)

Because it's an NL host city, there is no DH slot, hence Ortiz leading at 1B.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 31 May 2006 18:32 (nineteen years ago)

this is my first time voting for the all-star game... how come you can't vote for pitchers?

INSANE CLOWN FOSSE (Adrian Langston), Wednesday, 31 May 2006 18:34 (nineteen years ago)

Because the managers don't want that fucked up too... I'd say it's cuz who gets the start is largely a function of their team's schedule.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 31 May 2006 18:47 (nineteen years ago)

Who pitches in the game (and for how many innings, including who starts) partly depends on who didn't pitch the weekend before the ASG. Plus, you have guys like Pedro who pussy out of it every year.

xpost

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 31 May 2006 18:49 (nineteen years ago)

those pussies should just buck up and throw some mothafuckin balls!!!

INSANE CLOWN FOSSE (Adrian Langston), Wednesday, 31 May 2006 18:49 (nineteen years ago)

er, xpost

INSANE CLOWN FOSSE (Adrian Langston), Wednesday, 31 May 2006 18:50 (nineteen years ago)

If one needs a crusading spirit to vote... Yankee fans have stuffed CANO into the lead! In Runs Above Replacement adjusted for position, he's THIRTEENTH among AL 2b; TENTH in VORP; his Equivalent Average is .245 to Brian Roberts' .304.

You know what to do.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 2 June 2006 13:14 (nineteen years ago)

I had the same ballot as Morbius, save four differences: Jose Lopez at 2b in the AL, and in the NL Renteria at short, Andruw Jones instead of Beltran, and McCann behind the plate.

Jones might be a homer pick for me, but c'mon, Vizquel and Barrett over Renteria and McCann? You're a Mets fan, aren't you?

barefoot manthing (Garrett Martin), Friday, 2 June 2006 17:28 (nineteen years ago)

All other things being equal, I give 2/3 weight to last season and 1/3 to '06 thus far. Even at age 63, Omar V isn't the butcher Renteria is in the field and is having a better offensive year; a quarter of one excellent season (and a long DL stint) doesn't make McCann an All-Star, while Barrett was best with the bat last year and is HOT. (I came thisclose to voting for Piazza again.)

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 2 June 2006 17:57 (nineteen years ago)

Barrett is also the league leader in punches to AJ Pierzynski's face.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Friday, 2 June 2006 18:23 (nineteen years ago)

my hustle, guts and chemistry ballot:
1B - (Tom) Millar
2B - Cano
3B - Blalock
SS - Jeter
C - Varitek
OF - Damon, Ichiro, Hunter

Pujols
Biggio
Eckstein
D. Wright
Lo Duca
Bay/Edmonds/Giles

milo z (mlp), Friday, 2 June 2006 20:52 (nineteen years ago)

AL
1B: Ortiz
2B: Castillo
SS: Tejada
3B: Rodriguez
C: JOE MOTHERFUCKING .362-HITTING MAUER who is apparently getting less votes than .240-HITTING JASON VARITEK WHAT IS WRONG HERE
OF: Suzuki, Guerrero, Hunter (in the off chance he'll rob Pujols of a home run or something)

NL
1B: Pujols
2B: Utley
SS: Renteria
3B: Ensberg
C: McCann
OF: Bay, Soriano, Beltran

Wait - is Liriano cute, or is PRONK cute?

So PRONK?

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 3 July 2006 12:32 (eighteen years ago)

yeah i meant pronk. also i meant it facetiously. i just voted for liriano (and chris young) about 35 times.

maura (maura), Monday, 3 July 2006 14:15 (eighteen years ago)

I thought the managers got to select the pitchers.. thats the only explanation for Brad Penny making the team. Its not like people from LA actually vote for the all star team.

Like we need any of those other fucking candyass sports.

Liriano gets in to replace Contreras (who "pitched Sunday." A sorry excuse like that proves it REALLY counts). But Hafner still didn't make it, right?

Were those puke-yellow Derby jerseys supposed to be a "tribute" to lame Pirate unis?

Thanks Fox for bringing teh cheese in the opening montage.

"brad penny is almost as dominating as pedro martinez in 1999" then gives a dinger up to vlad, fuck you mccarver.

fox sports baseball is an embarassment.

fox sports baseball is an embarassment

man, wtf is up with this "I'm Joe Buck, Tim McCarver in a moment..." lead-in shit year after YEAR??

it's like, oh yes, we need to lead-in with a close up of the GREAT Joe Buck's ever receding whispy hair and have him waste time saying "Tim McCarver in a moment" so that 10 seconds later we can pull the camera back and bring McCarver into the shot .... grrrrrr!!! fuck Fox.

oh well. at least no "Stripey" or "Slidey" sightings yet or whatever the fuck the talking baseball was called.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Wednesday, 12 July 2006 00:35 (eighteen years ago)

fongoloid sangfroid (sanskrit), Wednesday, 12 July 2006 12:12 (eighteen years ago)

Lineups don't matter, sillies -- and neither should this game.

I'm glad Jackfuck and McCarver-Jeter told us the managers would "treat this like World Series Game 7" -- I look forward to the inning-long dugout interviews during this year's WS, along with the willynilly substitutions.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 12 July 2006 12:17 (eighteen years ago)

Ozzie should have gone with Papelbon!

i was certain this was going to happen

fongoloid sangfroid (sanskrit), Wednesday, 12 July 2006 12:32 (eighteen years ago)

Lineups don't matter, sillies -- and neither should this game.

wait weren't you all pissed about wright hitting 6th last year?

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 12 July 2006 14:25 (eighteen years ago)

Ozzie should have gone with Papelbon!
i was certain this was going to happen

i would've loved (on a certain detatched level) to have seen ozzie throw papelbon out there for like 4 innings. make him pitch until his arm detatched at the elbow. i wouldn't put it past ozzie to try to gain any conceivable edge over a rival with something like that.

of course on a different (more involved, less philosophical) level had papelbon come out of the pen at all i would've been screaming bloody murder at ozzie.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Wednesday, 12 July 2006 14:44 (eighteen years ago)

None that hadn't been beaten with a fungo bat before the game :\

mattbot (mattbot), Wednesday, 12 July 2006 18:20 (eighteen years ago)

Meanwhile, over in Japan...

everyone EXPECTS Shinjo to do crazy stuff. Apparently he wanted to land a helicopter on the field to make his entrance, which was not allowed... so instead, he wielded a rainbow-colored bat and wore an LED display on his belt that supposedly said, in English, "Never mind whatever I do!!! Fan is my treasure!!!" They also apparently decided Shinjo was the game's "MBP" - "Most Bakushou Player", which means amusing.

Here's a picture of Shinjo with the crazy belt and the rest of the colorful crap he was wearing.

But, that's not all.

Another Fighters outfielder, Hichori Morimoto, who was also on the All-Star roster, decided to dress up as an alien during the first game, and in effect, out-weirded Shinjo. Morimoto painted his entire head bright green and put on alien ears and antennae, and sat around in the dugout and the pre-game festivities dressed as such. Here he is on the bench between Kazuhiro Kiyohara and Daisuke Matsuzaka (who looks like he can't decide whether to be scared or amused), and later on they had him coaching third base (pictured here as Tomoya Satozaki ran by after hitting a solo home run).

c('°c) (Leee), Tuesday, 25 July 2006 19:46 (eighteen years ago)

There are some great YouTube clips of that game, including Shinjo's entrance and Kyuji Fujikawa celebrating his 26th bday by striking out Alex Cabrera and Michihiro Ogasawara to get the hold. I'll try to dig them up.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 25 July 2006 19:57 (eighteen years ago)
