Well, I guess it would be more appropriate to start this thread the day Clemens makes his first start of the season, but here goes...

Jose Cruz's other son is missing, but check this cop's name:

http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/headline/metro/3918899.html

"The pickup was found in an office parking lot in the 1200 block of Pin Oak, said Katy police Capt. Gay Dickerson. Texas EquuSearch director Tim Miller said the search effort was scaled back Wednesday because of rainy weather in the Houston area."

boldbury (boldbury), Friday, 2 June 2006 02:20 (eighteen years ago)

The Astros bullpen has been the big weakness this year, right? I know their starting pitching hasn't been as good, but it seems like when I check on scores Houston seems to be leading alot in the 6th or 7th and goes on to lose.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Friday, 2 June 2006 02:54 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, bullpen has been the biggest issue, but I think the offense is a big question mark too. They produced run pretty well throughout April but May was a lot tougher going. The question is whether the true Astros offense is more similar to April or to May, or is it somewhere in between. Garner is already tinkering with the line up. Jason Lane has been sitting except against leftied and Adam Everett's job at shortstop is looking tenuous despite his gold-glove-calibre defense.

One side effect of picking up Clemens is that one of the young guys in the rotation can go to the bullpen, which I think will definitely help. All three of the them have been up and down so far, but it appears that Fernando Nieve will be the one move to the pen once Clemens gets called up from the minors.

And Mike Gallo needs to be gone yesterday. The Astros lost the 18-inning marathon with the Pirates last weekend because he threw an intentional ball over the catcher's head, allowing a runner to reach third who then scored on a sac fly from the next batter. And this was after he gave up a tying home run on the first pitch of the botton of the 17th after the Astros had pulled ahead in the top of the inning.

boldbury (boldbury), Friday, 2 June 2006 03:29 (eighteen years ago)

Mike Lamb is getting into the lineup on a semi-regular basis. The guy had been hitting quite well in the at bats they had given him.

Jason Lane has to be a dissapointment, he had a good second half last year and seemed to be on the path to becoming a pretty good hitter.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Friday, 2 June 2006 11:47 (eighteen years ago)

Jeff Sackmann on Baseball Prospectus:

There are 13 outfielders in baseball with at least 150 plate appearances and a negative VORP. Many of those names aren’t surprising: Juan Pierre is in the “top” five, along with defense-first fourth-outfielder types like Jay Payton and Joey Gathright. Most notable on that list is the presence of the entire outfield of the Houston Astros....

Of course, Houston proved last year that you don’t need to lead the league in offensive production to win the pennant, so long as you set the pace in pitching and defense... When four of your starters are hitting below replacement level (and Brad Ausmus might just join that group by September), no single starting pitcher is going to win you the wild card.

how bad do we wanna see Liriano shut em out tonight?

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 22 June 2006 21:02 (eighteen years ago)

I've got Liriano vs. Le Roquet in my other fantasyleague. I'm hoping for a double no-no with 30+Ks won on an inside the park error.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 22 June 2006 23:03 (eighteen years ago)

Through 5:

Pitches-strikes - F Liriano 51-37; R Clemens 100-59.

mattbot (mattbot), Friday, 23 June 2006 01:50 (eighteen years ago)

Well there's a Johan and a King Felix thread... I don't want to jinx him though...

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Friday, 23 June 2006 01:58 (eighteen years ago)

Clemens (1 hit so not worried about the jinx) is just cruising through 4 against maybe the best team in MLB.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 22:58 (eighteen years ago)

But the Red Sox are playing the Mets?!?!

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 23:11 (eighteen years ago)

No-no, I clarified in that other thread that my claim was the Mets were the best team in the NL. Good catch though.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 23:32 (eighteen years ago)

:D

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 27 June 2006 23:57 (eighteen years ago)

He ran out of gas after 80 pitches. He's still in though.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 00:05 (eighteen years ago)

Why did the Astros even bring Clemens back if they knew they weren't going to score any runs for him? Why would this year be any different than last?

And that pitch Bucknor called ball four was right down the middle. Should have been a double play with the caught stealing. I don't know if I'm angrier about that call or the fact that the inning before the Astros had a runner at third with no outs and couldn't score the run.

boldbury (boldbury), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 02:52 (eighteen years ago)

The Rocket:
115 pitches... in 5 innings.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 01:19 (eighteen years ago)

that's downright cabrerian...oh, what? he didn't walk 8?

nevermind.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 12:23 (eighteen years ago)

Watching a Clemens start can be very frustrating for that very reason (along with the inexplicable ineptness of the offense in his starts). The commentators marvel that he refuses to give in to any hitter, but in practice this translates to a ton of 0-2 counts going to full (plus possible foul-offs). He can have a 1-2-3 inning and throw 15+ pitches.

boldbury (boldbury), Wednesday, 5 July 2006 03:10 (eighteen years ago)

Is there an official line on Morgan Ensberg's woes?

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 6 July 2006 21:43 (eighteen years ago)

Same thing he did for the first month of last year. He just waits and waits for the perfect pitch, so he's drawing lots of walks and striking out looking when he doesn't walk. He's made some good contact lately, but nothing is dropping. It's like a cycle with him. First, he goes into a little slump like any player does, then he starts thinking about it, which leads to his overthinking things, which lead to his never swinging the bat.

boldbury (boldbury), Thursday, 6 July 2006 23:21 (eighteen years ago)

And they said on the game broadcast last night that Garner is going to play Ensberg and Mike Lamb in a straight righty-lefty platoon. The downside there is that Lamb has been the Astros second best hitter the past month and really should be playing everyday regardless of whether a righty or lefty is pitching. Garner has even moved Berkman out to rightfield just to get Lamb in the lineup at first.

boldbury (boldbury), Thursday, 6 July 2006 23:26 (eighteen years ago)

Brent, while you're taking questions... what's the deal w/Lidge this year? He's killing my fantasy relief corps. Is his velocity down? Just unlucky? Remarkably drunk?

mattbot (mattbot), Friday, 7 July 2006 13:21 (eighteen years ago)

Lidge has lost his psychological edge. The Pujols and Podsednik HRs may have ruined him. It's not a velocity thing -- it's a falling behind hitters, wild in the strike zone thing.

novamax (novamax), Saturday, 8 July 2006 12:43 (eighteen years ago)

Whatever, Lomax. Why don't you go interview some more teenage white boy rappers from Katy at a Jack in the Box?

;-)

I'm not quite ready to blame it all on psychology. I think he definitely had some mechanical problems early on after he started tinkering with pitcing from the stretch full time. He's just not spotting the fastball as well this year and for whatever reason (scouting, tipping his pitches) a lot of guys are laying off his slider now. This forces him to throw his fastball more, which is fairly straight. And we all know that 97 mph + no movement + up in the zone is a good recipe for giving up a long ball.

The wierd thing is, he is 21-of-24 in save opportunities, with all three blown saves happening within about 10 days of each other in late April/early May. Since that stretch, he's been pretty reliable, but his ERA is still in the high 5s. His only major meltdown since then was the Sunday night game against the White Sox when he gave up the Grand Slam to Tad Iguchi. Ironically, since he entered the game with a four-run lead, there was no save opportunity and, thus, no blown save.

boldbury (boldbury), Saturday, 8 July 2006 16:29 (eighteen years ago)

I don't see why Garner would platoon Lamb at all, outside of Berkman, he is the only Astros hitter that has been good all year.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Saturday, 8 July 2006 18:25 (eighteen years ago)

OK, maybe psychology has something to do with it.

boldbury (boldbury), Saturday, 8 July 2006 22:05 (eighteen years ago)

As much as I'd like to say I told you so, this just sucks.

And next, if you must know, I'm planning on interviewing a Cajun rap posse at Joe's Crab Shack Kemah...

So apparently Oswalt was part of a proposed multi-team trade (incl Tejada), but the Stros got cold feet?

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 12:39 (eighteen years ago)

Also including Jason Schmidt and Lastings Milledge.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 12:52 (eighteen years ago)

Supposedly the Giants' unwillingness to get fair market value for Schmidt killed the deal. Schmidt (a 5-10) was open to any offers.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 13:03 (eighteen years ago)

"Fair market value"? In what was supposed to be a seller's market, the Giants didn't get any high impact offers for Schmidt. And don't throw any numbers at me, Shasta -- Schmidt KNOWS HOW TO WIN.

c('°c) (Leee), Tuesday, 1 August 2006 15:29 (eighteen years ago)

So apparently Oswalt was part of a proposed multi-team trade (incl Tejada), but the Stros got cold feet?

It's not cold feet when you decline to give up Oswalt, Ensberg and Everett for Tejada. It's called 'sanity'.

Besides, I've heard conflicting reports on who nixed that particular deal, if it was even actually offered. Uncle Drayton has been spinning it that Baltimore asked for Oswalt so they talked about it some but Oswalt was never really in danger of being traded. And I tend to believe that just because of the shear stupidity of giving up your ace and the left side of your infield for one shortstop. Ensberg and Everett for Tejada I can understand and would pull that trigger in a nanosecond, even if it meant throwing in a prospect.

Oswalt is arbitration-eligible this offseason and will be a free agent the year after that. He says he has "a bad taste" in his mouth after being named in trade rumors, so look for the Astros to try to sign him long-term before this season is done.

boldbury (boldbury), Wednesday, 2 August 2006 03:10 (eighteen years ago)

Woohoo! Six bombs tonight, including a two-run shot by Roy Oswalt!

At the trade deadline, Astros were 6 out of the WC and 9.5 behind the Cards. As of now, 3.5 out of WC and 6 behind the Cards. Sweet!

boldbury (boldbury), Thursday, 10 August 2006 22:11 (eighteen years ago)

Preston Wilson got DFA'd today. Apparently they tried to send down Jason Lane but he didn't claim waivers. Lane sure has sucked this year, but he's out-homered (12-9) in about half as many ABs (390-228).

And get this, Lane's BA is .211, but his OBP is .332 while Wilson is batting .269 with an OBP of .309.

boldbury (boldbury), Sunday, 13 August 2006 04:29 (eighteen years ago)

The Curse of the P-Dub. The Astros are 0-4 since Wilson was DFA'd. Can we pull him back and DFA Ensberg?

boldbury (boldbury), Wednesday, 16 August 2006 03:33 (eighteen years ago)

dude...

Preston Wilson: .714 OPS (9 HRs)
Morgan Ensberg: .880 OPS (20 HRs!)

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Wednesday, 16 August 2006 03:40 (eighteen years ago)

On the other hand, why not DFA Lidge?

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Wednesday, 16 August 2006 04:28 (eighteen years ago)

I know, but Morgan has been leaving runners on base like crazy since the Wilson move.

Now the 'Stros are down 2 going to the bottom of 18. I think I'm going to stab myself with an ice pick now.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 27 September 2006 12:51 (eighteen years ago)

I bet Houston really now wishes Clemens would have been around for the first two months of the season.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Thursday, 28 September 2006 02:34 (eighteen years ago)

Well, the last two years he had pretty much run out of gas by this time. He's throwing a lot better right now than he was at this time last year.

Plus, the Astros were something like 21-10 after about the first month of the season.

boldbury (boldbury), Thursday, 28 September 2006 03:26 (eighteen years ago)

He took a break after the WBC (as did a lot of other pitchers due to injury, fatigue, etc.).

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 28 September 2006 03:28 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah the Astros were bad ass at the beginning of the season. Berkman, Biggio, Ensberg were on fire and even Ausmus and Everett were batting somewhere near .300. Taylor Bucholz almost threw a no hitter and Wandy Rodriguez had a winning record. Time and injury sorted all that out and we got to where we are today.

Stuh-du-du-du-du-du-du-denka (jingleberries), Thursday, 28 September 2006 04:22 (eighteen years ago)

The Astros have now tied the Cards with 81 wins.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 28 September 2006 23:55 (eighteen years ago)

what's with the "terrifying" Astro Big 3 hype? Only Oswalt fits that profile, not Pettitte or 5-Inning Roger.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 29 September 2006 15:56 (eighteen years ago)

Pettitte has a 2.92 ERA since the All-Star break.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Friday, 29 September 2006 16:02 (eighteen years ago)

The only thing that scares me about the Astros chances are the closer. But I don't think Pujols is gonna be playing next week so that's one plus in his column.

Morbs, I know you're adverse to stats and would rather just judge players on the prevailing press cliches, but this season Clemens pitched 107.3 innings in 18 starts = 6 IP/start. Of the Mets starters, only Glavine has pitched more innings per start (6.4), Maine is about equal (6.0).

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Friday, 29 September 2006 16:09 (eighteen years ago)

Granted, bub -- and in September, he's made 4 starts, went 5 innings in 3, six in the other.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 29 September 2006 16:25 (eighteen years ago)

Morbs = this guy?

c('°c) (Leee), Friday, 29 September 2006 16:31 (eighteen years ago)

Something to keep in mind:

His line during that stretch (2.57 ERA, 1.05 WHIP, .157 BAA) is about equal to Johan Santana's second half line.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Friday, 29 September 2006 16:32 (eighteen years ago)

"bub" was a Choo Choo Coleman ref

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 29 September 2006 16:34 (eighteen years ago)

I pray to god there's a tie breaker game. I would pay money to see Lidge against Pujols at Minute Maid with the game on the line just to see Lidge piss his pants.

I pray to god there's a tie breaker game. I would pay money to see Lidge against Pujols at Minute Maid with the game on the line just to see Lidge piss his pants.

Not gonna happen. After the last Lidge-Pujols face-off (game-winning double by Pujols) Garner has learned that he just can't risk that match-up. Plus,Dan Wheeler has been closing games the past two weeks and the team has been winning. Lidge did get the save yesterday, but it was against the Pirates and Wheeler had gone 3 innings in the 15-inning game the night before.

Garner hasn't come out and said it, but Wheeler is the closer now.

boldbury (boldbury), Friday, 29 September 2006 21:44 (eighteen years ago)

down 0-3 to the Braves. It's gonna take a miracle (or a 4 run rally).

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Sunday, 1 October 2006 17:10 (eighteen years ago)

18 LOBs through 7 innings = they obviously don't want to go to the playoffs!

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Sunday, 1 October 2006 18:19 (eighteen years ago)

Keeping the Astros out of the playoffs won't nearly make up for this miserable Braves season, but it will feel pretty darn good, if it happens.

barefoot manthing (Garrett Martin), Sunday, 1 October 2006 18:24 (eighteen years ago)

Between the LOBs and that two-run error, the 'Stros are totally throwing this game. Or at least Mike Lamb is.

But shit, with Tyler Yates on the mound, Houston's got like a 70% chance of victory now.

barefoot manthing (Garrett Martin), Sunday, 1 October 2006 18:26 (eighteen years ago)

Luke Scott & Aubrey Huff = 10 LOBs

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Sunday, 1 October 2006 18:27 (eighteen years ago)

Team LOB = 11, but yeah, that's still a lot when you've scored only one run.

Huff was thrown out at the plate today too.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 1 October 2006 18:39 (eighteen years ago)

Holy crap, what a bummer of a game. The Astros reverted to mid-season LOB form. And the defense in the first three innings was certainly an anomoly for this team. As a team they don't have great range, but they're usually pretty sure-handed with the balls they get to.

Plus, the Braves were playing they're asses off. That play where Huff got thrown out was a heck of a play by Francoeur, diving to catch a sinking liner and then popping right up to make the throw.

In the end, you can't blame missing the playoffs on this game. If this team had started playing better ball even one week earlier, they would have been NL Central champs.

boldbury (boldbury), Monday, 2 October 2006 02:35 (eighteen years ago)

Barbara Bush and Steve Shasta = CRUSHED

Astros extend Garner's contract, fire pitching coach

Associated Press

HOUSTON -- After the Houston Astros missed the playoffs for the first time since 2003, general manager Tim Purpura had one main offseason priority: giving manager Phil Garner a one-year contract extension.

Garner will manage the Astros through the 2008 season, the team said Wednesday. His contract was set to expire after next season.

"I feel very comfortable with Phil. We work well together and that has grown this past season," Purpura said. "I have a comfort level with what Phil is doing, a comfort level with how he goes about his business."

"You feel like you have a partner in this," Purpura said. "I think you have to have those kinds of relationships."

The Astros are 219-179 in 2½ seasons under Garner. They won 10 of their last 12 games to go 82-80 this year, finishing 1½ games behind St. Louis in the NL Central.

Purpura said Garner never lobbied for an extension, but Garner said he was hoping one would come.

"I'm having a good time," said Garner, who just finished his 14th season as a big league manager. "We were competitive this year. I think with our ownership and front office, we're going to be competitive for years to come."

Team owner Drayton McLane Jr. said Garner "has contributed greatly to our recent success."

"Our goal has always been to bring a World Series championship to Houston, and we have come closer to reaching that goal under Phil's tenure as manager than at any other point in the history of the franchise," McLane said.

Also Wednesday, the Astros fired pitching coach Jim Hickey but retained bullpen coach Mark Bailey, hitting coach Sean Berry, bench coach Cecil Cooper, first base coach Jose Cruz and third base coach Doug Mansolino.

Hickey had been Houston's pitching coach since Garner became manager. The Astros had the NL's second-lowest ERA (4.08) this season and tied the New York Mets for the most shutouts (12).
