jimbeau (Left Coast): Injuries are a big deal for every team, but they seem to REALLY be a significant issue for Cleveland's chances to compete. What have you heard on Hafner, Reyes, Laffey, Adam Miller, Tony Sipp and now Pavano (will he hold up)? Thanks.

Will Carroll: Nothing, standard answer. The question is really whether the Indians are leveraging their medical staff and knowledge into an advantage. I think they THINK they are, but there's a point where you expect some % of these guys to break down and you're risking a 'death spiral.' We'll see.

Dr Morbius, Friday, 9 January 2009 21:09 (sixteen years ago)

Scouring the globe for talented baseball players, the Cleveland Indians plucked one from Eastern Europe—a Czech mate behind the plate.

The club signed 16-year-old catcher Martin Cervenka of the Czech Republic to a non-drafted minor league contract on Saturday. Peter Gahan, who scouts Europe and Australia for the Indians, discovered the right-handed hitter while evaluating players at Major League Baseball’s European Academy in Italy.

Indians CF Grady Sizemore won’t play for Team USA in the World Baseball Classic because of a sore left groin.

Left!

weatheringdaleson, Saturday, 28 February 2009 01:23 (sixteen years ago)

In human anatomy, the groin areas are the two creases at the junction of the torso with the legs,[1] on either side of the pubic area.[2] A pulled groin muscle usually refers to a pulled hip adduction muscle.[3]

Rob (Brighton): Do you think the Indians are going to play their infield out of position all season? Who should take the blame for that if they do?

Joe Sheehan: Eric Wedge. This should have been the first decision in spring training. Peralta even played some third base in winter ball. The defensive difference between DeRosa/Peralta/Cabrera and Peralta/Cabrera/DeRosa has to be two wins. All three guys would be better.

The Indians are looking at a meat-grinder early in the year: In the first two months and one day of the season, through June 1, Cleveland will play Boston, the Yankees and the Rays 21 times. From June to September, the Indians will play the Red Sox, Yankees and Rays a total of zero times.

Interior of The Arcade in downtown Cleveland

Location: Cleveland, Ohio

Built/Founded: 1888
Architect: Eisenmann & Smith; Detroit Bridge Co.
Architectural style(s): Other, Romanesque
Governing body: Private
Added to NRHP: March 20, 1973
NRHP Reference#: 73001408[1]

Looking down the length of The ArcadeThe Arcade in downtown Cleveland, Ohio, is a Victorian-era structure of two nine-story buildings, joined by a five-story arcade with a glass skylight spanning over 300 feet (91 m), along the four balconies.[2] Erected in 1890, at a cost of $867,000, the Arcade opened on Memorial Day (May 31, 1890).[2] The Arcade was modified in 1939, remodeling the Euclid Avenue entrance and adding some structural support.

History
The Arcade was built in 1890 by Detroit Bridge Co., run by Stephen V. Harkness.[2] It is a unique architectural treasure of 19th century urban America. Designed by John Eisenmann, the Arcade is one of the few remaining arcades of its kind in the United States. Modeled after the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II located in Milan,[2] the Arcade comprises two nine-story towers with a skylight, 100 feet (30 m) high, made of 1,800 panes of glass spanning over 300 feet (91 m). The construction was financed by John D. Rockefeller, Marcus Hanna, Charles F. Brush and several other wealthy Clevelanders of the day.[2]

The Arcade is a cross between a lighted court and a commercial shopping street. The building is a complex of three structures: two nine-story office buildings facing out to Euclid and Superior Avenues, connected via the five-story iron-and-glass enclosed arcade.[2] The Richardsonian arched entrance along Superior Avenue is original, but the Euclid Avenue front was remodeled in 1939[2] by the firm of Walker and Weeks. The level of the Superior Avenue entrance is about 12 feet (3.7 m) lower than the Euclid entrance, so that there are two bottom arcade floors, joined by staircases at each end. Since Euclid and Superior avenues are not parallel, a passage leads, at a 23-degree angle, off the Euclid entrance to a rotunda at the southern end of the Arcade.[2] The arcade itself is a 300-foot (91 m)-long covered light court, ringed by four levels of balconies, which step back above the Euclid Avenue level. The vertical lines of the columns, rising nearly 100 feet (33 m) to the glass roof, create a spacious domed interior.[2]

In 2001, the Hyatt corporation redeveloped the Arcade into Cleveland's first Hyatt Regency hotel. The Hyatt Regency occupies the two towers and the top three floors of the atrium area. The two lower floors of the atrium area remain open to the public with retail merchants and a food court. In addition, the Hyatt's lobby and offices are located near the Superior Avenue entrance

Jeff Passan at Yahoo! Sports: Yes, it's time for the Indians to panic.

They managed to finish at .500 last year and won't need to do much better to win their division!

It's a pretty mediocre division but the Tribe has a 4 games series coming up at Yankee stadium. I can see this team 2-11 after this weekend.

Dr Morbius, Wednesday, 15 April 2009 16:35 (sixteen years ago)

RTFA, stat-head: Over the past 25 full seasons, 45 teams in Major League Baseball have begun their seasons 1-6 or worse. Of those 45, eight have finished the year with a better-than-average record. And of those eight, only one – the 2007 Philadelphia Phillies – made the postseason. In which they were promptly swept . . . It gets uglier when looking at the full seasons of the wild-card era. Since 1996, only three teams have finished above .500 after starting 1-6: the ’04, ’06 and ’07 Phillies, who seem to have a knack for reversing ugly starts.

The Indians, on the other hand, have started 1-6 twice since 1982. They went 60-102 the first time, 61-101 the second.

OK, fine, yes, I Goggled it (Pancakes Hackman), Wednesday, 15 April 2009 18:56 (sixteen years ago)

Indians Trade Victor Martinez One Day Ahead of Victor Martinez Bobblehead Day at Progressive Field
Submitted by Julie on July 31, 2009 - 3:03pm.

* Cleveland Teams
* News
* Sports

Talk about some bad timing. Trading away all their top players this season hasn't been the only boneheaded move by the Tribe lately. Today, the Cleveland Indians traded catcher Victor Martinez to the Boston Red Sox in exchange for Justin Masterson and Nick Hagadone. But guess what tomorrow is in Cleveland - Victor Martinez Bobblehead night at Progressive Field.

All fans attending the Aug. 1 game against the Detroit Tigers will receive a Victor Martinez catcher bobblehead, compliments of Time Warner Cable. The game, which begins at 7:05pm, will also feature "Turn Back the Clock" night. Both teams will be sporting Negro League uniforms instead of their regular attire.

Only in Cleveland...... Maybe Indians fans headed out to the game tomorrow could sell them on eBay, after all, there will be a demand in Boston now.

Indians center fielder Grady Sizemore said he has taken legal action after personal photographs appeared on an Internet site on Sunday morning, The Cleveland Plain Dealer reported later that evening.

Fifteen photos taken with a cell-phone camera depict Sizemore alone in front of a bathroom mirror. In some of them, he is fully clothed, and in others, he's wearing little to no clothing.

Sizemore told The Plain Dealer that the pictures were meant for his significant other. Major League Baseball and the Players Association were said to be investigating the matter on his behalf.

"These pictures were stolen illegally from my girlfriend's e-mail," Sizemore told The Plain Dealer on Sunday night. "It's now a legal matter that is under investigation. I can't say anything more."

Indians general manager Mark Shapiro told the newspaper, "I have not seen the pictures, but I will look into it."

Sizemore is coming off left elbow and sports hernia surgery in September. In 2009, his sixth season, the 27-year-old hit .248 with 18 homers, 64 RBIs and 13 stolen bases in 106 games.
