A Day Late And $8m Short: the 2006 Draft Thread

Hochevar doesn't sign with the Dodgers last year and then goes first. Miller drops to sixth and the Tigers snatch him. The A's pick high schoolers! Who did well? Who picked the inexplicable? Is there anything to talk about here or do we wait three years to see how this one panned out?

The A's have been picking highschoolers for a couple of years now ... Beane has found some undervalued qualities in high schoolers, but he's not saying what they are.

Its kind of sad when the Dodgers wont pony up an extra $1MM to a Boras client and the party who comes in to pick up after the mess is KANSAS CITY.

The thing with the draft is that you can always speculate who did well, but you'll never really know for three freakin years.

I think the J's did the high school thing too.

Yeah the general consensus is that Boras and KC won and LA lost big time.

I don't know much about the A's picks (who does really other than scouts/people who follow this sort of thing religiously) but A's seem to have been very high on high school arms esp. lately. General BP consensus seems to be that they are no more or less risky these days than college arms so I am guessing that has something to do with it.

Not Beane needs BP's help to identify these things obv.

I read some stuff about Hochevar's stats in college that indicate he might not be all that, but I think LA's decision was mostly based on stiffing Boras more than anything and not trying to sign anymore of his clients, which Im okay with.

Whoops:

SEATTLE -- Picking up a phone to answer a call from the Seattle Mariners, highly regarded pitcher Brandon Morrow suffered an injury to his pitching elbow Tuesday that may have to be repaired by "Tommy John" ligament replacement surgery.

The Mariners announced that they've signed Morrow, the 5th pick. Has Miller been signed yet?
