who wants to commish this after last year's KRAZINESSSS?
― Dimension 5ive, Saturday, 7 February 2009 17:01 (sixteen years ago)
y - i'm down for commissn'n again.
don't expect much until i get back from Spain in early march tho.i liked the stats we used last year (except for the cycle and no-hitters) (maybe replace them with hbp or something for our lolstat)!
hmm xpost - remind me what craziness we had last year?!
― The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Saturday, 7 February 2009 17:04 (sixteen years ago)
wow - i had sort of blocked out how brutal my draft was last year... Ortiz, Pedro, Posada - Rafael Soriano! ugh!
maybe if a few people have different ideas for stats we can do a poll?
― The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Saturday, 7 February 2009 17:17 (sixteen years ago)
i wasnt in the league last year but wasnt there like huge controversies about something, okay maybe not who cares
― Dimension 5ive, Saturday, 7 February 2009 17:23 (sixteen years ago)
maybe you're thinking two years ago when shasta backed out of running the thing the day of the draft?!
― The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Saturday, 7 February 2009 17:32 (sixteen years ago)
i'm totally in again.
― j.q higgins, Saturday, 7 February 2009 17:47 (sixteen years ago)
Yeah, "say it ain't so, Shasta" was two years ago. Last year had to be the most drama-free season we've ever had! The low level of trade talk had a lot to do with that, though.
Count me in.
― NoTimeBeforeTime, Saturday, 7 February 2009 18:30 (sixteen years ago)
I would love a "positive drug test" LOLstat, which would include names from the super secret 2003 list, as long as the entire list doesn't leak before draft day.
― NoTimeBeforeTime, Saturday, 7 February 2009 18:31 (sixteen years ago)
I didn't back out of running the thing... I deleted my team from the league but I guess if you do that before assigning a co-commisioner it deletes the league. i'm not travelling nearly as much these days so I am up for a ILBB fantasy team... if you guys let me... u_u

shutouts, C/D?
I like having lots of stat categories, but I def. agree about CYC and NH.
― WmC, Tuesday, 10 February 2009 17:47 (sixteen years ago)
Shutouts are better than cycles and no-hitters, but they're a pretty empty category.
― Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Tuesday, 10 February 2009 18:32 (sixteen years ago)
what date is yahoo! opening up the leagues to registration?
seems a little tardy this year...
― (*゚ー゚)θ L(。・_・) °~ヾ(・ε・ *) (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 10 February 2009 18:50 (sixteen years ago)
ya, i can't find much about it aside from a vague mention that maybe it should be sometime this week?
no rush tho - since i'm not gonna be setting anything up until i'm back from Spain the first week of March. maybe set the draft up for the last weekend of March. 28 or 29th i think.
― The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Tuesday, 10 February 2009 19:11 (sixteen years ago)
Yahoo registration is open now, but what does peoples thinks about ESPN's advantage of free live scoring and fantasycast? I'd like to save that ten bucks.
― WmC, Tuesday, 17 February 2009 04:04 (sixteen years ago)
It wasn't a rhetorical question -- opinions plz!
― WmC, Wednesday, 18 February 2009 04:01 (sixteen years ago)
I have had bad experiences with ESPN.
― Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Wednesday, 18 February 2009 05:18 (sixteen years ago)
Such as?
― WmC, Wednesday, 18 February 2009 18:24 (sixteen years ago)
For one thing, I think most fantasy players I know tend to use Yahoo for most of their leagues, and an ESPN league requires them to make the extra effort to go to a different website, and that leads to a lot of players dropping out early or not trying as hard or whatever.
We did ESPN for the ILX fantasy football league this season, and I found the system incredibly inflexible and weird, but that not be a problem for baseball.
― Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Wednesday, 18 February 2009 18:27 (sixteen years ago)
Yeah, I was in the fantasy football league -- I don't remember anything weird or inflexible, except maybe not being able to make roster moves during the weekend, but like you say, that's n/a for baseball.
I'm just trying to save a few bucks everywhere I can this year. Economy's going to take a big chunk out of me.
― WmC, Wednesday, 18 February 2009 19:03 (sixteen years ago)
Yahoo doesn't cost anything unless you get stat tracker, which I have never bothered to purchase in 10+ years of using the site.
― Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Wednesday, 18 February 2009 19:07 (sixteen years ago)
you can just click the little link to the box score and get your live stats there rather than pay $10 for them to appear on the same page as your roster
― ciderpress, Wednesday, 18 February 2009 19:18 (sixteen years ago)
the free stats are nice. and stat tracker is my lifeblood during night classes! but yahoo does have familiarity plus lol trophy case and can keep track of carryover leagues. I would still vote yahoo b/c thats where are all my other fantasy action is.

my last 8:14. (196)Chris Carpenter - boya!15. (197) Scott Downs - dropped when he didn't get the closer gig right away16. (224) Mike Pelfrey - still on my team for some reason17. (225) Fred Lewis - dumped for Span18. (252) Jed Lowrie - ugh19. (253) J.J. Putz - UGH20. (280) Aaron Hill - BOOSH21. (281) Kendry Morales - i should not have dropped this man
― The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Friday, 18 September 2009 22:43 (sixteen years ago)
my best waiver pick-up would be Sandoval, without a doubt. sort of makes up for the Kendry bone-head move.
― The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Friday, 18 September 2009 22:45 (sixteen years ago)
i always feel pretty good about one "reach" pick and this year it was heath bell but looking back i have no idea wtf i was thinking with half of those guys.
my best waiver pick-ups were zobrist, upton, and montero. ortiz was ok but i'm not sure he really helped my team.
― omar little, Friday, 18 September 2009 22:48 (sixteen years ago)
well of course the wire is crucial. don't forget your grab of j.p. howell. one night i went hmm howell would be a great pickup, but i need holds.. how about bruney instead?
i didnt think i abandoned my team but now i realize i forgot to start arroyo today. in the spirit of this:
i have prince fielder in two leagues now. in a money work league 12 team basic 5x5 stats i ended up getting him yet again. so for this league the highest ranked undrafted player was jason giambi. i found these two 2008 lines fascinating:Fielder (25th pick)Player Action O-Rank Owned H/AB R HR RBI SB AVG OPS(Mil - 1B) 19 99% 162/588 86 34 102 3 .276 .879Giambi (undrafted)Player Action O-Rank Owned H/AB R HR RBI SB AVG OPS(Oak - 1B) 226 55% 113/458 68 32 96 2 .247 .875from 2008 stats they're essentially the same player save for 30 points of batting average and a couple more runs. i realize the 2009 projections tell a different tale but i kind of found this interesting.― sanskrit, Saturday, March 28, 2009 7:33 PM (5 months ago) Bookmark Suggest Ban Permalinkdifference being they're on opposite sides of the age/performance curve and prince is only 1 season removed from a 50hr season which he could forseeably replicate― ۞_۞ (ciderpress), Sunday, March 29, 2009 12:55 AM (5 months ago) Bookmark

yeah no shit about the 27 peak curve, but this season has been a perfect illustration of it. of course there are counter examples like ibanez but it's kind of fascinating how it played out just as we expected.
anyway, my point was, i took ellsbury first pick of the 6th round in the ilxor league (71st overall). i got a deal on his adp and he even exceeded my projections, he's having a great season. now, hindsight is 20/20 but i kind of found this CF best worlds wire pickup frankenstein interesting:
if you took michael bourn off the wire to start to season (bland start) then dropped him for juan pierre after manny's ban, then nyjer morgan after manny's return w/ pierre's playtime cut, then rajai davis after morgan's snapped finger, it would look like this (stats through today):
ellsburyHR RBI R BA NETSB OPS7 52 81 0.302 52 0.769
fast as shit CF composite wire pickups HR RBI R BA NETSB OPS3 57 101 0.336 45 0.835
again, it's a little unfair to line up three white hot runs, but there wasn't a ton of competition for these guys in our league until they really started to go nuts. plus i was able snag 3/4 of this run in another league.
― sanskrit, Sunday, 20 September 2009 00:17 (sixteen years ago)
11. (147) Pablo Sandoval (dropped, unwisely)12. (162) Jose Arredondo (dropped)13. (175) Cameron Maybin (dropped)14. (190) Xavier Nady (dropped)15. (203) Hank Blalock (dropped)16. (218) Ian Stewart (dropped)17. (231) Chris Volstad (should've dropped)18. (246) Armando Galarraga (dropped)19. (259) Elvis Andrus (decent steals guy, I guess)20. (274) Jeff Clement (dropped)21. (287) Manuel Corpas (dropped)
Probably my worst fantasy baseball draft ever.
― Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Sunday, 20 September 2009 00:25 (sixteen years ago)
i always try to keep big trades to a minimum and try to plug in weak spots with waiver work. i really don't try to panic on the big dudes i've got and prefer to hold onto them (i got burned on an erik bedard drop a couple seasons back.) my two trades this year were cutting bait on offensive players for pitchers. aaron harang for pat burrell was pretty useless for both sides and i got lucky on matt cain for milton bradley.

CONGRATULATIONS, IN AMBIORIX BURGOS
― Andy K, Monday, 5 October 2009 09:22 (sixteen years ago)
Yes, congrats! Quite the dominating win.
Me, I spent 874383 consecutive days in 10th place, then briefly climbed up to 9th before settling back in comfortable old 10th spot again. Not a season to write home about. My hitters badly underperformed (except for the first week of the season) and I was scrambling the whole season to plug holes in my offense.
― NoTimeBeforeTime, Monday, 5 October 2009 12:12 (sixteen years ago)
Very happy with second place. Team name will either remain the same next year or change to Colon/King AC (Bartolo Colon/Ray King Athletic Club).

― NoTimeBeforeTime, Monday, 5 October 2009 15:32 (sixteen years ago)
to answer WmC's question - it looks like we can make the settings whatever we like. although yahoo's not a huge help with info on the keeper settings.
xpost - i forget who the other canuks are! i finished 6, so between you and me, right now the Lighfoot cup will be parading down young street in my arms this year!

i would be down for a keeper league. is there some way to weigh who ppl keep (not in a prince fielder sense) to make it fairer?
― johnny crunch, Monday, 5 October 2009 16:20 (sixteen years ago)
i think you can keep whomever you like - we just decide on the number. there might be special consideration for rookies (think i read about a setting for that in some league)?
i wish yahoo had more info on the workings.
also - go Flames!
― The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Monday, 5 October 2009 16:27 (sixteen years ago)
these were the rules my buddy set in a H2H keeper league we just started this year ~ obviously we all knew them at the outset and i gotta say it did affect some of my decisions thru out so there's that..
--you cannot keep for the next year anyone drafted in the first 2 rounds --for the first player you keep, you give up a pick 1 round ahead of where he was drafted; for the second, it's 2 rounds, etc. (ex: you pick David Ortiz in round 4, you can keep him the next year by giving up your 3rd round pick) --you can keep as many of your drafted players as you want that remain on your roster all season (and ones acquired by trade) --you can keep no more than 3 free agents, and they count as being taken in the last round of the draft - which should be round 24 (these are guys you pick up later and did not draft yourself) --we'll have a consolation bracket playoff, where the winner gets top pick the following year
― johnny crunch, Monday, 5 October 2009 16:31 (sixteen years ago)

i know abt the rookie thing youre alluding to also i think...you can have a rule linked to a players mlb status and be allowed to keep guys for free who dont reach the set IP or AB #s. again, it affects a lot how you add/drop esp late in the year. also it might only work in a $-bid type league? thats where ive used it b4

does yahoo allow for hacking mass style leagues? i.e. a league with categories like pitcher walks, hitter strikeouts, blown saves, caught stealing, etc
obviously you have to find enough counting stats that work properly for it but it could be fun

i won one of my h2h leagues. unfortunately it wasn't the money one.winning that shit completely sucked and i'll never do an h2h league again unless it involves 4 OF, a CI, a MI, and at least 15 teams. needs to be deep to be fun. you shouldnt be allowed to add and drop billy butler on travel days nor stream Feldman, J Sanchez, and Tommy Hanson in the last week.

it is total amateur hour. and if it's a ten team league it's basically a roulette game.
