Looking glum because stenc just told me I'll be reimbursed for the ticket sometime during the World Series.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 10 August 2006 12:26 (seventeen years ago) link

Actually, it looks like Morbs is busy scoring the game and stence is waiting impatiently for the beer vendor.

And it appears that the guy behind you is waving his ass for the camera (or maybe that *is* the beer vendor).

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 10 August 2006 12:32 (seventeen years ago) link

I was indeed scoring it, and stenc was mugging for a baby in front of us.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 10 August 2006 12:45 (seventeen years ago) link

ten years pass...

I'm going to post a bunch of photos here--sized them down, but there are 17, so they'll take up some space.

I digitized some slides that my dad took at the Astros training camp in '72. These are slides that I salvaged when my dad decided to put 10 years' worth of slides onto a VHS tape sometime in the '90s, a tape that has been misplaced for the moment. I found the slides a few weeks ago when I was looking for something else.

I can identify about half the players. Tried to look at old baseball cards online to figure out the rest, but I can't.

embarrassed for your shirt, but that's *awesome*

i went to pirates camp in bradenton in '77 (when i was five) and got autographs from manny sanguillen and bill robinson and my cousin dave and when willie stargell signed my program he said 'now what do you say?' and a thousand years later i blurted out 'thank you?'

mookieproof, Saturday, 3 September 2016 02:29 (seven years ago) link

"Cousin Dave"? Your cousin is Dave Parker?

My dad undoubtedly had to talk me into every one of these, for which I'm very grateful.

clemenza, Saturday, 3 September 2016 02:35 (seven years ago) link

all men are my cousins, but particularly those that share my surname

oh yeah i can't even imagine how i was persuaded to go down to the railing at all -- and they were all so super-nice about it. it's tough for modern ballplayers because there are so many demands but you never know which is going to make a kid love/hate you for 40 years

mookieproof, Saturday, 3 September 2016 02:43 (seven years ago) link

By the way, I had planned to wear the exact same style shirt on the first day of school next week, but now you've hurt my feelings.

clemenza, Saturday, 3 September 2016 02:50 (seven years ago) link

guaranteed that whatever i was wearing in bradenton was worse

you'll be okay, teach

Don't know how I missed this: #14 isn't Rader, it's Harry the Hat (big news for a Ball Four worshipper).

wow Fred Gladding

I'm in a Ball Four Facebook group--someone identified #11 as the 21-year-old Mike Easler (drafted by the Astros in '69, didn't make his major-league debut until '73).
