btw not too surprised at the prelim projected standings in the Depth Charts -- cept are the Marlins really as weak as the Nats?

Morbs, does this usually appear in bookstores on the 16th or is this the shipping date?

mullah mangenius (brownie), Wednesday, 11 February 2009 20:04 (seventeen years ago)

That WAS the shipping date... I've been checking the wrong stores the last couple years, but if it's already shipping, it should be on shelves next week.

Dr Morbius, Wednesday, 11 February 2009 20:32 (seventeen years ago)

got it!

i was wondering!! tbh the fish don't have a very 'prospectus' team. they got rid of jacobs (awful, esp w/ runners on base - anecdotal evidence btw but i think im right) but still plan to start cantu and uggla, both who were basically only valuable for home runs and both who played totally over their heads as of last year. dunno why they don't have the nats projected for like 70 wins tho...

big fatass rick ross (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 15 February 2009 08:27 (seventeen years ago)

not to mention cody ross, who i love to death but idk if dude is good for 25 home runs this year

but last year they had an awful bullpen, awful defense, starters were genuinely bad until sanchez really picked it up. i think they have potentially the deepest staff in the nl east atm tho

big fatass rick ross (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 15 February 2009 08:30 (seventeen years ago)

i guess the braves starters are pretty good. dunno how the phillies plan to go at it w/ brett meyers as their number 2...

Dr Morbius, Friday, 20 February 2009 16:46 (seventeen years ago)

hmmm goldstein, normandin, goldman, and laurila in boston. not the most exciting crew.

devin harris with an appletini (call all destroyer), Friday, 20 February 2009 16:57 (seventeen years ago)

Goldman's very funny and I like Laurila.

Dr Morbius, Friday, 20 February 2009 17:07 (seventeen years ago)

...bcz Laurila and Rob Neyer are the only writers I see at the SABR convention who comment on my Mr. Met/Yo La Tengo shirt.

You can download the BP annual's index from the site (no the book doesnt have one):

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 24 February 2009 20:34 (sixteen years ago)

Why do they never come to SF? Frickin' East Bay.

Alex in SF, Tuesday, 24 February 2009 21:08 (sixteen years ago)

Wait, no player index? This makes life difficult. Is Jason Lane in this book?

francisF, Friday, 6 March 2009 14:37 (sixteen years ago)

i think the index may be on their site somewhere? not sure but take a look.

at this point i enjoy their player writeups more than their stats.

the game has a heartbeat, cankles.

Dr Morbius, Friday, 6 March 2009 16:29 (sixteen years ago)

I'm blind, sorry. Lane's not in here. I know he sucks and all, but in 17AB he's hitting .412/.444/.941

francisF, Saturday, 7 March 2009 14:30 (sixteen years ago)

dude, 17 ab

Dr Morbius, Saturday, 7 March 2009 14:35 (sixteen years ago)

BP Manhattan tour stop at 6 tnite, 18th/5th B & N.

didn't remember Twins had gotten such 'lucky' run production last year til I read their chapter today.

Dr Morbius, Thursday, 12 March 2009 15:24 (sixteen years ago)

I just picked this up for the first time and I like it. The Astros seem to be the luckiest team on the face of the earth.

I think the writing is good.

bela fregosi (brownie), Friday, 13 March 2009 01:23 (sixteen years ago)

Goldstein's 3 best organizations: Rays, A's, Rangers. He thinks AL-NL gap may be considerably greater 5 years from now.

Dr Morbius, Friday, 13 March 2009 01:26 (sixteen years ago)

Eh you can never tell. A couple of crazy trades, a bunch of busts and suddenly everything evens out again.

Alex in SF, Friday, 13 March 2009 04:05 (sixteen years ago)

Goldstein also said he turned down a full-time scouting job in his home area (Chicago) this winter. Pay: $28,5000 (they "went a little high for a starting salary"). The panel spent 5 minutes telling a guy who was going for a sports management degree that he'd almost certainly be miserable and poor.

Dr Morbius, Friday, 13 March 2009 13:43 (sixteen years ago)

that's $28,500. comma is in the right place

Dr Morbius, Friday, 13 March 2009 13:44 (sixteen years ago)

Maybe the stogies and straw hats can be expensed.

Andy K, Friday, 13 March 2009 17:50 (sixteen years ago)

I banged my toe on the book the other night, it swelled up.

Past a Diving Jeter (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 26 March 2009 17:55 (sixteen years ago)

Changing the floor for replacement value has really dramatically affected WARP.

Alex in SF, Thursday, 26 March 2009 18:38 (sixteen years ago)

I assume bcz of Hamels missing time, PECOTA has Phils tied for East 2nd with Braves at 87 wins.

Dr Morbius, Friday, 3 April 2009 14:55 (sixteen years ago)

BP projects the Yanks, BoSox, and Rays for 99 (!!), 95, and 94 wins respectively! WAHT?

NoTimeBeforeTime, Saturday, 4 April 2009 15:52 (sixteen years ago)

they're gonna feast on the birds i guess

۞_۞ (ciderpress), Saturday, 4 April 2009 17:31 (sixteen years ago)

And the AL West and Central.

Alex in SF, Sunday, 5 April 2009 03:14 (sixteen years ago)

i don't doubt they'll have the 3 highest win totals in the league, but i'd go lower.

Dr Morbius, Sunday, 5 April 2009 05:08 (sixteen years ago)

three weeks pass...
