Went.

Got Frank Howard's autograph, and told him Mets fans appreciated how he handled the 1983 team in transition as interim manager. "I'll tell ya what," Hondo says. "CLASS ORGANIZATION. Nelson Doubleday... Fred Wilpon..."

I don't contradict 6'7" guys even if they're 73 years old.

And since none of you are ever gonna join SABR, that's the only story you get.

OH SHIT MORBS IS BACK

also, I steered entirely clear of the trivia, but Alan Schwarz didn't:

(I know the retired trivia champ in that piece, to say hi to. He grumbles about statheads.)

Oh, hey, Morbs, welcome back, so anyway, Go Tribe amirite?

Formed in 1971, SABR is facing a bit of a crisis because its median member age has climbed to the late 50s. (This provided some levity on Saturday night when the trivia moderator yukked that several SABR folks roomed with Jim Creighton on the 1860 Brooklyn Excelsiors.)

I can't tell if that's a lazy zing or not.

Different levity: They bused us to the Orioles-Red Sox game on Friday night -- that's right, driving from D.C. to Balt on a weekend rush hour; I missed the first 3 batters.

So the "bus captain" decided to ask trivia questions for the whole two hours. One was "Who was the first manager to win 500 games with 3 different teams? Hint: He was nicknamed for the rudest part of his anatomy."

Passenger: "Dick Williams!"

Heck, you got lucky, Morbs -- when I lived down there, I once drive from Arlington, VA to Camden for a game, left at 5pm for a 7:05 start, and missed the first three innings.

also saw the Potomac Nationals lose 5-0 to Winston-Salem (pitching coach: Bobby Thigpen), then watched the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs get pounded for 4 innings on Sunday by Lancaster until a friggin' monsoon arrived. We left after an hour-plus delay, but they never resumed; field was a swamp.
