Big news: the White Sox have solved their ongoing problem in center field! From ESPNChicago.com:

The White Sox will call up outfielder Scott Podsednik on Friday, according to Podsednik's agent, Ryan Gleichowski.

"He's thrilled. He's in great shape, feels great and is really looking forward to this opportunity," Gleichowski said.

A Sox spokesperson said there will be no roster move announced today.

Podsednik, 33, was a catalyst for the Sox's 2005 World Series championship team. The Sox signed him to a one-year minor-league deal on April 14.

Or maybe they haven't. From FanHouse's Ed Price:

Outfielder Jerry Owens, who was 1-for-12 this season, was spotted packing his bags after Wednesday's game, so it seems like he will be designated for assignment.

Even though the White Sox are getting just a .284 slugging percentage (no homers) and .608 OPS from center field, installing Podsednik at the position could be a mistake.

"He's gone backwards, man," said a scout who recently watched Podsednik at Triple-A Charlotte. "He doesn't look good at all. I'd keep Jerry Owens over this Podsendnik. He's a below-average center fielder right now."

The scout said Podsednik -- whose best tool was always his speed -- ran from home to first base in 4.2-4.3 seconds, which is below-average for a lefty hitter, "and he's running as hard as he can."

The Padres and White Sox agreed to a trade centered on Jake Peavy moving from the Padres to the White Sox. Peavy has repeatedly stated that he wants to stay in the National League and a source close to Peavy re-iterated that in a call this morning. Peavy has a three year extension in place beginning in 2010, so there’s not much that the White Sox can do to give him more incentive. One of the main concerns, I was told, is that Peavy is unsure about playing for Ozzie Guillen. Peavy has until tomorrow to approve the deal. No “window” has been open or requested by either team.

The White Sox made an aggressive first offer of four players, including Aaron Poreda, Clayton Richard, and two other prospects. Gordon Beckham is thought to have been discussed, though it is unlikely the Sox would be willing to deal him, even for Peavy. He would have to be traded as a PTBNL, due to the Incaviglia rule. There’s been speculation that the Sox would deal Chris Getz, but again, the names included in the agreed deal have not been confirmed by any outlet at this time.

Bathtime at the Apollo (G00blar), Thursday, 21 May 2009 17:09 (fifteen years ago) link

Without Beckham that seems like a lousy deal for the Pads. With Beckham the reverse.

Alex in SF, Thursday, 21 May 2009 17:24 (fifteen years ago) link

Hey, if they aren't willing to deal Beckham, why not hold onto him until the trade deadline, you assholes.

Agree with this also. Guillen + Peavy could get ugly. Also, Peavy + Chicago media.

“If this was the 1980s, (none) of these guys would be in the big leagues right now because if you hit .210-.230 and you can’t execute, I don’t think you should be out here," Guillen said shortly after third baseman Josh Fields went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts and committed an error in the top of the ninth inning that set up the Tigers' winning rally.

"When you can’t bunt, hit-and-run, squeeze and move the guy over, you better hit 40 home runs and drive in 140. The only positive about this game was (reliever) D.J. Carrasco and a couple home runs here and there. A little excitement, fans got a little excited, and that’s it."

Fields' error was one of three miscues by the Sox, and Guillen was tired of explaining why their defense was shoddy.

“Is the clubhouse closed?" Guillen said. "We should open it and let them (answer) why they’re so horse (bleep)."

After losing for the sixth time in seven games, Guillen was more baffled.

“I wonder why," he said. "We give players opportunity. One thing about players, you protect their (rears) for 140 games, and you say one thing about it one day and all of a sudden you’re a bad person. And it’s not an easy spot to be. But my job is to get the best out of them, and I’m not getting the best out of them. Then it might be my fault. I might not push hard enough. I might not get mad enough. Or I’m too tough on some guys.

“If we don’t do what we’re supposed to do, I’ll take the blame because that’s my job. In the meanwhile, if anyone watched from the first day of the season to right now, I will look myself in the mirror and figure out whose fault it is. We’re not doing it. We got excited here and there. After that, it was a boring game. Really, really, really bad baseball game, terrible the way the guys played the game.”

Guillen seemed tired of delivering messages to his players.

“I talked to them," Guillen said. "One thing about it: Good teams win games. Bad teams have meetings. Well, I think we’re to the point of having a lot of meetings. That’s all I can say.”

After the game, the Sox optioned left-hander Wes Whisler to make room for second-game starter Jose Contreras. Guillen was asked if more moves were in store.

“No, not yet. Pretty soon,” Guillen said.

Welcome back, Freddy Garcia.

scott podsednik is having fun -

LF Scott Podsednik admitted that he's changed both on the field and off the field from the player the Sox knew back in 2005-07. For the first time in his career, he's now having fun. "That's the biggest difference in my game from two to three years ago to now, I used to play the game with a lot of anxiety," Podsednik said. "I pressed, I tried to go out and make things happen. I tried to take all the things I've learned in my years in the big leagues and make myself better. That's what has helped me the most, to find the ability to go out and play the game at a relaxed level. A big step toward that was the spring training game I played against the Sox near the end of camp. The Rockies had told me, 'You're not going to make this club [just before the game],' and from there I had nothing to lose. I went out, had fun and played the game really relaxed. A light kind of went off and I told myself, 'Hey, you need to figure out how to take the field that relaxed day in and day out.' " Considering Podsednik was hitting .331 over his last 36 games entering Sunday, it's worked.

* Buehrle broke with baseball code by talking about the no-hitter in the dugout between innings.

* It was not the fastest perfect game on record. Mike Witt's (Sept. 30, 1984) and Tom Browning's (Sept. 16, 1988) were both over in less than two hours. Buehrle, though, apparently spent only 32 minute on the mound.

* Buehrle had the same home plate umpire that he did in his no-hitter in April 2007, Eric Cooper. He went 27-up, 27-down in that game since he picked off the only baserunner.

* Wise's saving catch came right in front of an outfield-wall mural which honours 1950s White Sox ace Billy Pierce. On June 27, 1958, Pierce lost a perfect game with two out in the ninth inning.

* Steve Rosenbloom at Rosenblog: "It’s not a matter of whether the Sox ever retire Buehrle’s number. It’s a question of whether it’s done by morning."

* Wise was in the opposing dugout for the previous perfecto, Randy Johnson's vs. the Atlanta Braves on May 18, 2004.

* White Sox catcher Ramon Castro had never caught Buehrle before. He's not the first to do so. Current Pittsburgh Pirates manager John Russell caught one of Nolan Ryan's no-hitters the first time he caught him.

It doesn't count as an "earned run" when the Pitcher makes A FIELDING ERROR, that's just frickin common sense. A FIELDING ERROR, has nothing to do with the pitcher's performance PITCHING, whether the error is made by the pitcher or the left-fielder. Jesus, watch what you accuse of being stupid....

Jenks is not a happy man, and it has nothing to do with another offseason beginning with trade rumors. Instead, during a weekend chat with MLB.com, Jenks took umbrage with the White Sox once again calling out his conditioning at the end of the 2009 season.

"I've done everything I can do, I've done everything that is physically possible, to make myself in better shape this year," said Jenks. "Where the years previously I didn't lose weight in-season, I didn't want my weight issue to be a factor as to why I had an off season."

...

"Obviously, this kid has to show up in shape," Guillen said. "That's his problem every winter. Hopefully, he knows about it. That's his career and that's the way he's going to make money, if he takes care of himself a little bit in the winter."

Guillen is not the only one in the organization who feels this way. He relayed comments from White Sox chairman Jerry Reinsdorf, who in a brief address to the team said that if the players didn't want to prepare themselves for next year, let the team know and something will be done about it.

"For four years now, I've been the same guy, and when I slow down a little ..." Jenks said. "Bad things happen to anyone, not because I need to get into shape. This has been me the whole time, so where is the problem?"
