6th May, 2009 - 10:20 am
Chicago Sun-Times - On Tuesday, White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen appeared to rule out Pedro Martinez as a possible addition to the team's starting rotation.

"Pedro Martinez was mentioned in spring training, but just because a couple of his friends called me, and my job is to give Kenny the information," Guillen said. "But that's it. No Pedro, not right now. That's Kenny's decision, but right now that's not on my mind."

The Cubs are another team that's been scouting Pedro Martinez in the Dominican Republic, where he continues to throw regularly, according to National League sources.

The Rays said they had scouts look at Martinez recently, as well. A Rays person said the chances for them to sign Martinez still appear "slight.''

While Martinez doesn't appear close to making a decision, his continued workouts show he has a strong interest in returning. The Cubs' main problem this year has been their offense, so it's somewhat curious they are in the mix.

One possible Cubs complication is their ownership situation, which is in limbo. The Cubs worked around the uncertainty in the winter, so it may not be a problem, but the Ricketts family's purchase of the team from Sam Zell has moved slowly.

Martinez has been looking to make $5 million. He also would prefer a team in the race. It isn't known whether the National League is favored, but that seems to be a recent preference of pitchers.

The Yankees are among four teams slated to watch Pedro Martinez throw Friday in the Dominican Republic, according to a story by Ken Rosenthal on Foxsports.com, which cites major-league sources.

Each of the teams - the group also includes the Rays, Cubs and Angels - are downplaying their interest in the free-agent pitcher, the report said. One executive, the Web site reported, is only sending people to watch Martinez as a courtesy to Martinez's agent, Fernando Cuza.

The international signing period, when teams can sign prospects not eligible for the baseball draft, begins July 2, so it figures that most teams have scouts in the Dominican Republic to eye potential prospects.

The 37-year-old Martinez, an ex-Met and Red Sox, is seeking $3 million for the rest of the season, the story said.

The Yankees already have enough starting pitchers, so it figures their interest would be low. Phil Hughes, a starter, is already pitching out of the bullpen.

Yankee GM Brian Cashman did not immediately return an e-mail from the Daily News seeking comment.

MLB.com reports the RangersNew York Rangers no longer are interested in Pedro MartinezPedro Martinez , whose options continue to dwindle.

T.R. Sullivan writes, "word is that he's still looking for a $5 million salary that is probably beyond what the Rangers want to pay."

"We're looking under every stone," Rangers GM Jon Daniels told the Web site.

"We're going to do our homework and make sure we're not overlooking anything. But [adding to the] bullpen is the most realistic. The 'pen has been very good except for the first two weeks of the season. If we can add to it, so it remains a strength, I'd like to do that."

It is the latest rejection for Martinez, after the Rays, Yankees and Angels told the right-hander they are not interested. The Cubs and Brewers also have scouted the 37-year-old in the Dominican Republic.

However, the Rangers promoted former Met and Yankee Orlando Hernandez to Double-A with the intention of him joiningthe rotation at some point.

The 43-year-old right-hander who was signed to a minor league contract by the Rangers on June 12. He last pitched in the major leagues in 2007 with the Mets, when he was 9-5 with a 3.72 ERA.

yeah fillies are gay but pedro is cool.

“I promised my dad I would come back and play baseball like he asked me, his last word. Making it back feels like I just took something off my shoulders. The fact that I got a win or whatever is very good, but to actually be able to make it back like I promised my dad I would do, it was probably my best gift. That’s for him. This one’s for him.”

New Phillies pitcher Pedro Martinez, on winning his comeback game for his late father.

Pedro readying for season

By Mark J. Miller

Pedro MartinezPedro Martinez is 38 and he's worked it now so that his baseball seasons are only half what they used to be. It worked beautifully for him last year when he joined the Philadelphia Phillies' rotation in August and pitched well (seven innings, no runs, two hits) against the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League Championship Series.

According to the New York Post, Pedro's buddy David Ortiz, the Boston Red Sox sometimes slugger, says Martinez is getting his body ready now so teams can start bidding on him a little later in the season when it becomes clearer which teams are in the race and which aren't.

Ortiz, who says Martinez is like a father to him, spoke to Martinez a month ago and at that point the righthander was working out in the Dominican Republic and Miami to ready himself. "Somebody will need him at one point. At some point," he told the paper.

One team that has said it won't want Martinez is one of his former employers, the New York Mets.
