It's no coincidence the Twins are perennial contenders. The small-market franchise is built on high-character guys. Tim Kurkjian »

And then there's Twins outfielder Michael Cuddyer. Eleven years ago, as he was taking a pre-calculus exam in his senior year at Great Bridge High School in Chesapeake, Va., he was informed that he had been drafted in the first round (ninth overall) by the Twins. He finished the exam; he went to the rest of his classes that day then celebrated later that night.

Oh HOLY SHIT! No wonder the Twins have been so awesome.

Gardenhire is OK.

DETROIT -- Minnesota Twins manager Ron Gardenhire seemed to be very upset at a pitcher Thursday afternoon after the Twins and Detroit Tigers exchanged beanballs.

The odd thing about the situation: The pitcher he was angry with was his own.

Tigers pitcher Jeremy Bonderman hit Twins outfielder Delmon Young with the first pitch of the ninth inning in Minnesota’s 8-3 victory.

As the benches began to clear, Young gestured angrily toward his own dugout, apparently upset with teammate Jose Mijares, who had thrown a pitch behind Tigers shortstop Adam Everett an inning earlier.

“I think everybody understands what he was mad at,” Gardenhire said. “He wasn’t mad at their pitcher. I got between him and their pitcher. He wasn’t mad at their pitcher.”

Gardenhire said Mijares was to blame for triggering the incident.

“Our pitcher lost his cool out there and made a mistake, threw a ball behind a guy,” he said. “We told them we screwed up. They did what they had to do, and it’s over with.”

Neither Bonderman nor Tigers manager Jim Leyland, who was ejected in the eighth inning after Everett was almost hit by Mijares, would comment about the incident.

Gardenhire didn’t just say the Tigers were justified in throwing at Young, which led to the ejections of both Bonderman and catcher Gerald Laird. He went a step further.

“They did the right thing -- what they had to do,” Gardenhire said. “Our guy just lost his composure. I have no clue what he did, why he let the ball fly like that. It’s all been taken care of.

“I talked to Mr. Leyland and told him we screwed up on that, and you guys did what you had to do, and we’ll go from there.”

Three batters were hit by pitches in the game. Tigers starter Nate Robertson hit Denard Span in the third inning. Twins starter Scott Baker hit Marcus Thames in the fourth inning and almost hit him again in the fifth.

The near-miss in the fifth led to a lengthy glare from Thames toward Baker.

Gardenhire was asked whether Baker had command of his pitches.

“No, no. He always throws 106 pitches in five innings. No, that’s not command issues,” Gardenhire said. “Any other questions.

“I took him out because I might start him tomorrow. He only threw five innings. I figured I could bring him back tomorrow.”

Gardenhire continued.

“Baker did not have command. You saw that, too,” he added. “I’m a little irritated right now because of the way the day ended, so I apologize for being a jerk, but I’m going to be one today.”

clearly the Twins are up against it, but why is the MSM suddenly "oooh, they have to face GREINKE" when the constant story all year is that he finds wins hard to come by? KC getting swept is far from impossible.
