"Leyland, comparing the Tigers' $83 million payroll to the Yankees (over $200 million): 'You go to the clothing store with $500 and I go with $100, you should come out with better stuff. You get a cashmere, and I get one of those itchy tweed things.'"

Andy_K (Andy_K), Monday, 2 October 2006 01:16 (eighteen years ago)

Verlander is well-rested and morale is on an upswing so Tigers in three.

Mind/soul split, I refuse to pick

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 2 October 2006 12:32 (eighteen years ago)

TIGGERS IN FIVE. Why? Because A) getting shellacked by the Royals is bound to light a fire, B) Mussina can't pitch every game, and C) Neifi Perez. Wang gets hosed. Kenny Rogers does not see the mound @ all. I-Rod singles (fuck), and goes goofy throwing out Jetes and Damon on the basepaths. A-Rod will "choke". Series MVP = Justin Verlander.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 2 October 2006 13:04 (eighteen years ago)

I guess nobody has paid attention to Justin Verlander's 4.54ERA/1.55WHIP/.300BAA post-AS stats.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Monday, 2 October 2006 13:15 (eighteen years ago)

Verlander is well-rested

Andy_K (Andy_K), Monday, 2 October 2006 13:41 (eighteen years ago)

If that's what you want to call missing his last start due to fatigue in his throwing arm, I'm not gonna argue with you. But I will point out that he is at a career high in innings pitched (cf: Dontrelle Willis' in the 2003 playoffs).

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Monday, 2 October 2006 13:46 (eighteen years ago)

I'm sort of joking.

Poor post-AS stats are pretty widespread with the Tigers. Attention has been paid.

Haven't the slightest clue what to expect. Baseball --> baseball PLAYOFFS --> ???

Yanks in 3. MVP: Alex Rodriguez

polyphonic (polyphonic), Monday, 2 October 2006 22:05 (eighteen years ago)

I hate that guy because he's bi-racial.

c('°c) (Leee), Monday, 2 October 2006 22:16 (eighteen years ago)

I hate him because he is sexy.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 2 October 2006 22:25 (eighteen years ago)

I hate him because polyphonic is probably right -- he'll hit .500 in this series and the Yanks will win. Then we'll all have to pray to our respective gods that Minnesota or Oakland can eliminate them because the NL teams likely don't stand a chance of winning the WS.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Monday, 2 October 2006 22:34 (eighteen years ago)

"because the NL teams likely don't stand a chance of winning the WS."

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 13:43 (eighteen years ago)

Rany Jazayerli (free article) on how the Tigers CAN win:

"One of their right-handed hitters needs to shock the world by touching Mariano Rivera for a key hit somewhere along the line.

"They must keep Neifi Perez away from the field at all times. I recommend the Grand Hyatt on 42nd St. myself."

Bonderman very sharp

Andy_K (Andy_K), Saturday, 7 October 2006 20:10 (eighteen years ago)

only 23 pitches so far!

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Saturday, 7 October 2006 20:11 (eighteen years ago)

Really hoping Inge turns it around. Almost all of his regular season HRs and RBIs were significant.

Andy_K (Andy_K), Saturday, 7 October 2006 20:13 (eighteen years ago)

"significant HRs and RBI"

Jimmy Mod is COMPLETELY MISERABLE SAN DIEGO (The Famous Jimmy Mod), Saturday, 7 October 2006 20:19 (eighteen years ago)

Yanks are practically phoning this in so far.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Saturday, 7 October 2006 20:21 (eighteen years ago)

Not that they really cared so much in the first place.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Saturday, 7 October 2006 20:22 (eighteen years ago)

Jeter is 0-2, so what do you expect? If Mr. October Version Beta can't set a good example for the rest of the team, all is doomed.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 7 October 2006 20:33 (eighteen years ago)

The Yanks' scoreless streak is now at 18 innings.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 7 October 2006 20:34 (eighteen years ago)

"significant HRs and RBI"

Or "clutch"

Jimmy Mod is COMPLETELY MISERABLE SAN DIEGO (The Famous Jimmy Mod), Saturday, 7 October 2006 20:44 (eighteen years ago)

The way Jeter lazily fielded that ball says it all.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Saturday, 7 October 2006 20:48 (eighteen years ago)

So far, I'd say this *is* more embarrassing than losing 4 straight to the Red Sox in the ALCS.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Saturday, 7 October 2006 20:53 (eighteen years ago)

6-0, el perfecto through five for Bonderman. It doesn't get any better than this.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 7 October 2006 20:56 (eighteen years ago)

Too bad Morgan's not present.

"Remember, the Yankees could very well be right back into this game with one swing of the bat."

Repeat this (with slight variations) twice for each inning.

Andy_K (Andy_K), Saturday, 7 October 2006 20:58 (eighteen years ago)

"Now these Yankees can be behind by seven and tie it up with one swing. You might think that's impossible but they're that good."

Andy_K (Andy_K), Saturday, 7 October 2006 20:59 (eighteen years ago)

The commentators do keep saying "If the Tigers can pull this one off"

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Saturday, 7 October 2006 21:11 (eighteen years ago)

"If the nine players currently on the field continue to play the best they have ever played..."

Andy_K (Andy_K), Saturday, 7 October 2006 21:16 (eighteen years ago)

"Dear Dr. Z: Please kidnap Tommy Lasorda and his throng and prevent them from appearing together on television."

Andy_K (Andy_K), Saturday, 7 October 2006 21:21 (eighteen years ago)

"And then continue to stay off television yourself."

Andy_K (Andy_K), Saturday, 7 October 2006 21:22 (eighteen years ago)

55 pitches for Bonderman through six? I forget, which team does Neifi Perez play for?

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 7 October 2006 21:30 (eighteen years ago)

Once the crowd at Michigan Stadium finds out, it might be even louder than the one at Comerica.

Andy_K (Andy_K), Saturday, 7 October 2006 22:02 (eighteen years ago)

For those who missed it, how bad was A-Rod's error?

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Saturday, 7 October 2006 22:08 (eighteen years ago)

not that bad--he took a ball off the heel of his mitt and made a pretty decent throw--there was a question of whether it'd be charged to 1b.

scrimhaw1837 (son_of_scrimshaw), Saturday, 7 October 2006 22:36 (eighteen years ago)

If I were a cop and Kenny Rogers wanted to pour champagne on me, I think I would not be too happy. Or maybe I would, dunno.

The Bearnaise-Stain Bears (Rock Hardy), Saturday, 7 October 2006 22:36 (eighteen years ago)

http://proxy.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2617224

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 8 October 2006 05:39 (eighteen years ago)

This is definitely one of the best moments. Yankee dominance and buy offs have greatly turned me off from baseball this decade, hopefully this could be a turned corner.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Sunday, 8 October 2006 13:44 (eighteen years ago)

I have been so happy today, all because of the Tigers.

GILLY'S BAGG'EAR VANCE OF COUPARI (Ex Leon), Sunday, 8 October 2006 13:51 (eighteen years ago)

Fewer than dozen fans greet dazed Yanks in New York

Andy_K (Andy_K), Sunday, 8 October 2006 14:02 (eighteen years ago)

OK, this has gone from funny to bewildering/kinda sad.

nate p. (natepatrin), Sunday, 8 October 2006 14:33 (eighteen years ago)

Nah, the Yanks need to be crushed under the heel of fate for another ten, twelve years to be kinda sad.

The Bearnaise-Stain Bears (Rock Hardy), Sunday, 8 October 2006 15:08 (eighteen years ago)

zaxxon25 (zaxxon25), Monday, 9 October 2006 15:35 (eighteen years ago)

They would have to be making a lot less money for me to start feeling sad for them.
