Game on

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 19:13 (eighteen years ago)

screw this game, who's gonna pitch for the Mets

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 19:15 (eighteen years ago)

Stick it, Potsie.

Please don't tell me that Giles 2-6-1 DP was an attempted sac bunt.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 19:30 (eighteen years ago)

When did they clear Edmonds to fly with the postconcussion thing?

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 19:38 (eighteen years ago)

Team MVP David Eckstein just grounded out with a runner on 2nd.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 19:46 (eighteen years ago)

He was not Team MVP.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 19:49 (eighteen years ago)

That's not what Bill Plaschke would say.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 19:52 (eighteen years ago)

bill plaschke also probably thinks leaving eric gagne off the postseason roster is a mistake

gear (gear), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 19:53 (eighteen years ago)

21 pitches for Carpy through 3? And he just struck out the side? The hell!?!?!?

PRINCE ALBERT IN THE CAN!

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 20:02 (eighteen years ago)

Damn.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 20:03 (eighteen years ago)

Was that home run as far as Gameday makes it look?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 20:04 (eighteen years ago)

bill plaschke also probably thinks leaving eric gagne off the postseason roster is a mistake

He probably thinks it's not too late to make a waiver trade for Adrian Beltre and add him to the LCS roster.

I can totally see Pujols hitting .650 in this series with 5 HRs and the Cards still losing.

Was that home run as far as Gameday makes it look?

Yeah, it was a no-doubter.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 20:06 (eighteen years ago)

Pujols :(`````

tylero (tylero), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 20:10 (eighteen years ago)

i don't understand what peavy was trying to do w/ that pitch

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 20:13 (eighteen years ago)

Yadier Molina is an incredible offensive sinkhole. .595 OPS??! That's pitcher bad.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 20:15 (eighteen years ago)

Not that much better than leadoff Team MVP.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 20:44 (eighteen years ago)

??! .692 is terrible too, a 100 pts is a BIG difference esp. with a .350 OBP.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 20:52 (eighteen years ago)

Meanwhile Peavy got shelled and is gone after 5 1/3. Ouch.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 20:59 (eighteen years ago)

16 out of 17 ESPN folx picked the Padres to win this series.

None of them picked the Padres to win the World Series though.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 21:03 (eighteen years ago)

Why does Todd Walker's Gameday picture look like someone smeared vaseline on it?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 21:07 (eighteen years ago)

padres much more in the game even with bad start from peavy than they were last year.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Tuesday, 3 October 2006 22:08 (eighteen years ago)

Chris Young = 45.3
Clay Hensley = 40.6
Jake Peavy = 38.6
Cla Meredith = 27.8
Woody Williams = 27.1
Trevor Hoffman = 25.6
Scott Linebrink = 18.7
Brian Sweeney = 15.1
Alan Embree = 13.4

-- Jimmy Mod's Champion Erotic Fantasy Team 2006 (fuckyouandyouremai...), October 2nd, 2006.

kekekekekekeke

I call this: THE SERIES THAT NO ONE LOVED

Jimmy Mod is like a child who walks into the middle of a movie (The Famous Jimmy, Tuesday, 3 October 2006 22:54 (eighteen years ago)

I can't believe the Padres are counting on guys like Bellhorn and Walker to save their late-inning rally bacon.

zaxxon25 (zaxxon25), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 16:12 (eighteen years ago)

Boomer starting the game in style... HBP to the rally monkey Xstein.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 5 October 2006 19:13 (eighteen years ago)

...and Pujols GIDP.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 5 October 2006 19:18 (eighteen years ago)

Holy shit, this has to be a playoff record for runners getting thrown out at home.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 5 October 2006 19:42 (eighteen years ago)

Im am baffled as to how Weaver hasnt given up a run yet. Emphasis on yet.

Stuh-du-du-du-du-du-du-denka (jingleberries), Thursday, 5 October 2006 20:02 (eighteen years ago)

san diego probably has the best TACOS in the US.

So dumb.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 5 October 2006 20:54 (eighteen years ago)

this looks more like last year's padres.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Thursday, 5 October 2006 21:02 (eighteen years ago)

playing a little better in the field, pitching a little better (exception of peavy's performance) - i will give them that.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Thursday, 5 October 2006 21:09 (eighteen years ago)

Fucking Padres.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Thursday, 5 October 2006 21:10 (eighteen years ago)

Way to get 2 hits off JEFF WEAVER padres.

tylero (tylero), Thursday, 5 October 2006 21:21 (eighteen years ago)

i'll give him credit - i think he hit his spots today. how many awesome curve balls have the cardinals thrown in these games so far?

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Thursday, 5 October 2006 21:44 (eighteen years ago)

Brantley's face is on the brink of being swallowed by whatever you call the ample part that is beneath it and increasing in size by the week.

Andy_K (Andy_K), Thursday, 5 October 2006 22:32 (eighteen years ago)

Boy I bet some people sure feel dumb for assuming that the Cardinals September swoon meant jack in the playoffs. . .

. . . that said the series is obv not over. Is Suppan pitching game 3?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 6 October 2006 01:15 (eighteen years ago)

Oh - I'm already being quite smug re: my pick to win this one.
And what the fuck is the deal with this announcer dude. Is he brain damaged? Someone needs to shove a thesaurus in his face the next time he starts going "WOW!... wow!... wow."

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Friday, 6 October 2006 02:27 (eighteen years ago)

fuckin BACK-BACK-BACK Berman, when it's 100 feet foul?

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 6 October 2006 12:38 (eighteen years ago)

Yes. That... man.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Friday, 6 October 2006 13:37 (eighteen years ago)

I got the impression he was distracted most the game with one of those hand-held football games or something.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Friday, 6 October 2006 13:42 (eighteen years ago)

Boy I bet some people sure feel dumb for assuming that the Cardinals September swoon meant jack in the playoffs. . .

you'd think they'd have learned their lesson with the white sox last year.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 6 October 2006 14:26 (eighteen years ago)

TT, that's why he's the most "beloved" ESPN asshat, and should stick to football.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Friday, 6 October 2006 14:34 (eighteen years ago)

TS BERMAN AND HIS BACK BACK BACK VS JOE BUCK AND HIS SELF SELF RIGHTEOUSOSITY

maura (maura), Saturday, 7 October 2006 13:15 (eighteen years ago)

Berman.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Saturday, 7 October 2006 14:26 (eighteen years ago)

Oh man, I have to pick Buck. For all his grandstanding, he's actually listenable for short stretches, whereas Berman almost never is.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 7 October 2006 14:34 (eighteen years ago)

Another runner thrown out at home.

Andy_K (Andy_K), Saturday, 7 October 2006 16:19 (eighteen years ago)

Young is cruising. Too bad my TV baseball coverage has been pre-empted by Euro 2008 qualifying. I've only now discovered that espn has swanked up their Gamecast, that's nice to see.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 7 October 2006 17:33 (eighteen years ago)

Wondering why Young isn't their number one starter.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Saturday, 7 October 2006 17:54 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, I posted the VORP numbers for SD's staff upthread, it's weird that SD would manage their postseason so poorly after an amazing 2nd half.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Saturday, 7 October 2006 18:15 (eighteen years ago)

The only excuse I can think of: they were playing for the playoffs (or position) up until the very last day of the season, and didn't have the luxury of setting their rotation properly. But, yeah, Chris Young should've been the Game 1 starter.

David R. (popshots75`), Saturday, 7 October 2006 18:39 (eighteen years ago)

Doesnt Young have a mediocre record at Petco? For as dominant as he is on the road, hes not so great at home. I guess the conventional wisdom was you're good with Peavy for Game 1, Jeff Weaver will implode in Game 2 and you have Chris Young on the road for Game 3.

Stuh-du-du-du-du-du-du-denka (jingleberries), Saturday, 7 October 2006 18:44 (eighteen years ago)

No, that's perfectly defensible ... Peavy had a great season too, so it's reasonable for him to start Game 1, and Young's gaudy home/road splits favour a Game 3 start on the road in St. Louis. If SD had managed to win a game at in their own stadium then you all wouldn't be having this discussion.

xpost ... agreed

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 7 October 2006 18:46 (eighteen years ago)

It's ironic that Young has such a mediocre record at Petco, being that he's a pretty extreme fly-out pitcher. He's got the lowest go/ao% of any regular Padres pitcher. Maybe the big outfield just means there is more space for balls to drop in as hits.

tylero (tylero), Saturday, 7 October 2006 18:53 (eighteen years ago)

pujols didn't know how many outs there were on that last play there. : D

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Saturday, 7 October 2006 19:08 (eighteen years ago)

LInebrink looks like shit. How you could miss so bad to Chris Duncan is pretty embarrassing.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Saturday, 7 October 2006 19:18 (eighteen years ago)

Of course if he gets the GIDP here, he's a hero. But If he gives up the tying run...

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Saturday, 7 October 2006 19:19 (eighteen years ago)

:-D

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Saturday, 7 October 2006 19:20 (eighteen years ago)

All I know is that we won more games than the Dodgers and that is all that matters to me.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Sunday, 8 October 2006 03:34 (eighteen years ago)

Do you go with Peavy (5 days rest, like Carpenter) or do you go with Woody Williams?

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Sunday, 8 October 2006 15:21 (eighteen years ago)

I go with Peavy and then Wells, but I think Boch is going with Woody, which is fine with me. It doesn't really matter who pitches, the important question is whether the offense decides to show up.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Sunday, 8 October 2006 16:59 (eighteen years ago)

I like the call somehow. Peavy just lost to Carpenter the other day. Would be great to see him battle for game five win at home.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Sunday, 8 October 2006 18:08 (eighteen years ago)

Of course, either way, YOU ROLL THE DICE.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Sunday, 8 October 2006 18:54 (eighteen years ago)

It's Williams. Based on his last start versus the Cards at Busch I'm wishing him all sorts of luck (and hoping that he walks Ronnie Belliard).

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Sunday, 8 October 2006 21:57 (eighteen years ago)

Uh, who has this telecast? E$PN and Fox both say other things on the channel guide.

The Bearnaise-Stain Bears (Rock Hardy), Sunday, 8 October 2006 22:47 (eighteen years ago)

Fox

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Sunday, 8 October 2006 22:53 (eighteen years ago)

i can't believe how much i still hate spezio. and now with that cardinal red soul patch!

jelky (jergins), Monday, 9 October 2006 01:20 (eighteen years ago)

Would have loved to see Hensley starting in the sixth inning, but it wouldn't have mattered since the hitters chose not to show up again.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Monday, 9 October 2006 03:39 (eighteen years ago)

You know, as much as people pick on Joe Buck, Steve Brennaman (sp?) is much much much worse.

Mr. Que (Mr.Que), Monday, 9 October 2006 15:52 (eighteen years ago)

THOM Brenneman. Dude had a hard on for the Penny trade during the Mets / Dodgers series. Because it obviously KILLED the franchise, and trading away Heart & Soul (and semi-affective relief) for a 16-game winner is the Worst Trade Ever.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 9 October 2006 15:57 (eighteen years ago)

Oh shit, sorry. Anyway, the dude is such an ass. All that crap about The Game Being Diminished Because Pete Rose Isn't in it? Seriously, I don't mind Joe Buck as much as most people, but this Thom guy is the WORST. And at least with Joe Morgan you can laugh at the stupid stuff that comes out of his mouth.

Mr. Que (Mr.Que), Monday, 9 October 2006 16:01 (eighteen years ago)

you know, as much as people pick on the tommy lasorda commercials, the red sox fan locked in the bathroom is pretty hot

mookieproof (mookieproof), Monday, 9 October 2006 17:49 (eighteen years ago)

We're certainly not picking on the commercials because we don't find the girl attractive. We're picking on them because Tommy Lasorda is a fucking carbuncle.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 9 October 2006 19:46 (eighteen years ago)

I love Tommy, but that tux isn't doing him any favors.

boldbury (boldbury), Monday, 9 October 2006 19:49 (eighteen years ago)
