It's a bit strange that Joe Torre, of all people, is the person confirming to the news outlets that this was Lidle's plane.

Minutes before the crash, witnesses said the craft was flying erratically. Initial reports indicate that Lidle owns the Cirrus SR20, which took off from New Jersey's Teterboro Airport at about 2:30 p.m., and that he was the only person aboard the plane. His passport was found on the street.

Jesus: Yahoo reports that 4 were killed and that Lidle was on the plane, and that it "crashed into a 50-story condominium tower...raining flaming debris on sidewalks."

c('°c) (Leee), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 20:23 (nineteen years ago)

goddamn, Steinbrenner is truly the puppetmaster.

▒█▄█ ▄▄▄ ▒█▄█ , Wednesday, 11 October 2006 20:26 (nineteen years ago)

That's some crazy shit.

Arthur Rhodes: "He is a scab. When he started, he would go 51/3 innings and (the bullpen) would have to win the game for him. The only thing Cory Lidle wants to do is fly around in his airplane and gamble. He doesn't have a work ethic. After every start, he didn't run or lift weights. He would sit in the clubhouse and eat ice cream. ... He shouldn't say that, he shouldn't say anything like that because he is a scab. He crossed the line when guys like me, Flash (Tom Gordon) and (Mike) Lieberthal were playing. He is a replacement player."

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 11 October 2006 23:45 (nineteen years ago)

Former teammates also remembered him at the AL championship series in Oakland.

"We would call him 'Snacks' because he would eat Reese's between innings when he was pitching," Oakland pitcher Barry Zito said. "He'd have Whoppers, ice cream, all while throwing eight scoreless innings."

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 12 October 2006 11:55 (nineteen years ago)

Kind of a morbid question, but it's been at the back of my mind: Lidle pitched for 7 teams. How many of them are going to retire his number? I can think of a few players who had jerseys retired due to untimely deaths (Fred Hutchinson, Jim Umbricht, Don Wilson), but it seems kind of rare.

nate p. (natepatrin), Thursday, 12 October 2006 13:49 (nineteen years ago)

without trying to be cruel, I hope none. No one's gonna retire Ken Caminiti's number cuz, y'know, he brought it on himself.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 12 October 2006 13:58 (nineteen years ago)

I don't think the Cubs retired Ken Hubbs' number, either, so who knows.

have they found the black box yet (or whatever a small aircraft's version of one is)?

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 12 October 2006 15:12 (nineteen years ago)

I posted on the ILE thread that just before the crash, like 15 minutes before, a distress call was picked up from the plane, so in all likelihood, not suicide.

c('°c) (Leee), Thursday, 12 October 2006 15:16 (nineteen years ago)

no black box on this craft, no requirement to file a flight plan. there seems to be a dispute as to whether or not there was a distress call. the ntsb flak i saw on cnn this am seemed to say otherwise.

tribe didn't retire steve (?) olin or todd (tim?) crews, did they?

just wanted to clarify: the FAA reports that any evidence of a distress call are FALSE.

is there a link to any reports of a "out of sorts" lidle on a sports talk call-in show earlier in the day?

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Friday, 13 October 2006 16:22 (nineteen years ago)

i posted a link to the actual call on the ile thread

and that link is dead.

the FAA said that there was no distress call, where's Oliver Stone?

Hundreds of family, friends and teammates remembered Lidle on Tuesday at an emotional 45-minute outdoor service in his hometown. At a reception later, they munched on In-N-Out burgers, his favorite fast food.
