Fun article in the SJ Mercury here. Make sure to read it this week before it goes off into the $-archive.

I love this anecdote: "Sundberg said he, too, used to talk all the time, mostly using his psychology books to drive a hitter nutty, if only for a few pitches. He recalled how Jim Spencer used to torment Rangers pitching no matter the formula, so, using a trick he learned from Martin, Sundberg began telling Spencer what was coming. Spencer went 1 for 10 in the series and asked the umpire if there was some rule about making the catcher shut up."

Can I also proclaim my love for the term "tools of ignorance"?

Old school Dodger catcher Johnny Roseboro said something to Giant Hall of Fame pitcher Juan Marichal in Spanish while he was batting and Marichal took his bat and clocked him up side of the head. There were some sports writers who didn't vote for Marichal into the HOF because of the incident.

really what did he say?

I've always heard it as Roseboro was pissed that Marichal had hit a batter earlier in the game and was throwing the ball back to the pitcher real close to Marichal's ear and Marichal told him to stop and Roseboro stood up and Marichal let him have it with the bat.

I'm not sure what he said, but from an account I read about he said something to Marichal in Spanish as the event unfolded.
