it's so hard to say. if carp pitched the entire season it'd be his (assuming he pitched just as good) - but i could go with either one personally.

If Wainwright wouldn't have gotten totally screwed the last time he pitched (he left the game in the 7th, up 5-0, and the bullpen managed to blow it) he would've made it to 20 wins. Wins alone shouldn't determine the winner, of course, but I do think a lot of voters see 20 wins, with the nearest competitors at 17W and 15W and just go for the 20-game winner.

Watching Wainwright pitch this season, it seems like he's gotten screwed several times this season. And I just noticed espn's "tough loss" stat, which measures the amount of times that a pitcher loses despite a quality start (6 full innings, 3 earned runs or less). Turns out that Wainwright had 6 Tough Losses this season, putting him up near the top in the NL. Lincecum and Haren ere up there too, with 5, while Carp only had 2.

So, in hypothetical world, assuming half of each pitcher's Tough Losses were instead Wins, and the other half remained as Losses, the W/L stats would look like this:

Wainwright: 6 22-5
Carpenter: 2 18-3
Lincecum: 5 18-4
Haren: 5 17-7

(I was nice with Lincecum and Haren and translated 3 of their 5 Tough Losses into Wins)

The World's Biggest Christ (Z S), Sunday, 4 October 2009 17:22 (fourteen years ago) link

The other thing is that pitchers for last place teams don't generally have a chance unless they pull off a Steve Carlton. Haren was great this year, but it wasn't a legendary season or anything.

I could see Lincecum possibly winning this if the Giants had come closer to making the playoffs. But as it stands, it's Wainwright vs Carp, I think. And as a big Cards fan, I can't really decide.

The World's Biggest Christ (Z S), Sunday, 4 October 2009 17:38 (fourteen years ago) link

You can make an argument for any of the top 3, just like you could make it for TL or Johan last year.

A Patch on Blazing Saddles (Dr Morbius), Sunday, 4 October 2009 17:40 (fourteen years ago) link

One more argument for Wainwright. He led the NL in innings pitched, and then there's this: 12-1 on the road, and 7-7 at home despite a 2.05 ERA in 19 home starts. I think he'll win the Cy Young, and I think he just deserves it (barely) over Carp, too.

Lincecum has his own favorite indicator.

"To say which one I look to the most, I would just say WHIP," he said, referring to walks plus hits allowed per inning, "just because you just limit the amount of baserunners that can hurt you."
