Ned's Islamic Bullpen: the 2007 Dodgers thread

Gear posts: Free agent center fielder Juan Pierre has agreed to a five-year contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers, a source told ESPN.com on Monday. The deal is believed to be worth $44-45 million. The deal will become complete when Pierre passes a physical exam, the source said. Pierre, 29, is a .303 hitter over seven seasons with Colorado, Florida and the Chicago Cubs. He led the National League with 204 hits in 2006. The San Francisco Giants were also interested in Pierre, and had offered him a four-year deal in the $32-34 million range, a source said.

$44m! I still can't believe that. That makes the Soriano deal seem like smart money.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 00:26 (nineteen years ago)

"Ned's Islamic Bullpen" is a quality pun.

Pierre is so worthless.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 00:27 (nineteen years ago)

I'm sure Bill Plaschke thinks this is the best deal ever.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 00:29 (nineteen years ago)

Ned's GM credentials are plummeting rapidly. Resigning Nomar when hes not really needed and then picking up one of the worst outfielders in the game? Why god. Why. You can get just as much production from fucking Repko and Jayson Werth at a fraction of the price.

Stuh-du-du-du-du-du-du-denka (jingleberries), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 00:31 (nineteen years ago)

Oh wait people. False alarm. I picked up this blurb in an article on dodgers.com. This is all for the best:

Pierre is known as a hard worker and positive clubhouse influence.

Apparently we're taking the NL West by the strength of our character.

Stuh-du-du-du-du-du-du-denka (jingleberries), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 00:34 (nineteen years ago)

and why not go to drew and say, 'hey j.d. how about 3 years/$40 mill?'

this dude is why i'm glad the cubs went after soriano. they can afford him and even when he sucks in five years he'll be better than pierre ever was.

gear (gear), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 00:36 (nineteen years ago)

Each deal this offseason makes the previous deal look less bad. That said I don't think anything can make signing Juan Pierre for $45m look less bad. I wouldn't sign him for $4.5m a year, let alone $9m!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 00:45 (nineteen years ago)

wait until carlos lee gets 100 million for 6 years from the dodgers.

gear (gear), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 00:58 (nineteen years ago)

fat chance on that, he's astros-bound

Haikunym (Haikunym), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 01:25 (nineteen years ago)

For three hundred twenty million over 20 years.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 04:12 (nineteen years ago)

This is a well named thread.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 04:35 (nineteen years ago)

I hope someone signs Adam Eaton for 5 years 50 mil!

polyphonic (polyphonic), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 04:50 (nineteen years ago)

I hope someone signs me!

g00blar (gooblar), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 08:10 (nineteen years ago)

Each deal this offseason makes the previous deal look less bad.

It cannot be easily overstated how OTM this is.

govern yourself accordingly (dayan), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 15:12 (nineteen years ago)

My boss, a Dodger's fan, thinks that Pierre is the greatest signing ever cuz like he "sets the table" real well.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 17:54 (nineteen years ago)

Thats because Ned sez that he gets on base 'a heckofa lot'.

Stuh-du-du-du-du-du-du-denka (jingleberries), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 20:26 (nineteen years ago)

.330, yes -- a fantastically satisfactory OBP for someone with absolutely no power.

last in the NL in runs and hits for the month of August.
they don't really have any power in the line up. so they HAVE to get on base and manufacture anything they get. it a tough way to get by for sure.

Wow Diamondbacks have a NEGATIVE 15 run differential! That's downright terrible. That said they also have Justin Upton.

Alex in SF, Monday, 13 August 2007 20:27 (eighteen years ago)

Haha Dodgers are only better than the Giants now.

Leee, Monday, 13 August 2007 20:34 (eighteen years ago)

everybody is better than the giants Leee.

Steve Shasta, Monday, 13 August 2007 21:03 (eighteen years ago)

What a fucking horrible team. I was watching the game tonight, seeing Chad Billingsley throw 116 pitches in 5 innings, Shea Hillenbrand at 3rd and Roberto Hernandez warming up in the pen. This is a sinking ship.

Hay you guise, don't miss the highlight reel of Wells beating out a bunt single.

That bunt was great. I'd like to know what Wright was saying to him when Wells got to third.

WHAT WHAT!

Leee, Monday, 10 September 2007 02:36 (eighteen years ago)

This is why I don't talk shit.

Its typical that the Dodgers would follow up that series with Chicago with tanking in SF. I expect them to win the next 2 series with SD and AZ, then lose a bunch of games in the ensuing weeks thus prolonging my agony.

mayor jingleberries, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 06:07 (eighteen years ago)

I went to bed early, what happened?

Leee, Wednesday, 19 September 2007 16:15 (eighteen years ago)

I will never understand how the Dodgers didn't win the division. They had all the resources to get it done, but might finish fourth! Granted, they'd be in first in the central, but it's still surprising to me.

polyphonic, Wednesday, 19 September 2007 16:17 (eighteen years ago)

"I didn't have to watch," he said. "You knew it was gone as soon as it was hit."

carne asada, Wednesday, 19 September 2007 16:18 (eighteen years ago)

I will never understand how the Dodgers didn't win the division.

You underestimate Grady Little.

David R., Thursday, 20 September 2007 02:30 (eighteen years ago)

And Juan Pierre.

David R., Thursday, 20 September 2007 02:30 (eighteen years ago)

You underestimate Grady Little.

This is true!

And Juan Pierre.

I honestly thought they'd figure out that he should be the fourth outfielder by now, or maybe trade him when they realized Matt Kemp is 100x better.

polyphonic, Thursday, 20 September 2007 06:11 (eighteen years ago)

Nobody pays $10M/yr for a guy to sit on the bench (OK, maybe the Yankees), but it's not like the Dodgers can claim they didn't know what they were getting with Pierre. I'm hard pressed to think of a player where you could be *more* sure of *exactly* what you're getting!

NoTimeBeforeTime, Thursday, 20 September 2007 12:45 (eighteen years ago)

So is this team going to finish with a winning record? I kinda hope it doesn't just to spite Colletti. I also hope hes happy now that he has a full blown vets v. rookies clubhouse implosion. Team chemistry my ass.

Torre is talking about benching Kemp in favor of Pierre tomorrow for thr third game in a row. There is no god.

mayor jingleberries, Monday, 7 April 2008 04:34 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, out of the 3 OFs being fucked with, Kemp is the one I WOULD NOT bench. Dude came in yesterday as a pinch-RUNNER? Seriously?

I've half a mind to fly to LA & plant all sorts of contraband (B-12 needles, J-horror faux snuff, CD-R copies of the new Madonna album) in Pierre's locker -- who's with me?

David R., Monday, 7 April 2008 12:55 (seventeen years ago)

Well, Pierre isn't exactly lighting it up out there, so maybe the situation will resolve itself. Hell, Andruw Jones has been terrible too! Maybe the best combination is Pierre, Ethier and Kemp! Haha

polyphonic, Tuesday, 8 April 2008 06:59 (seventeen years ago)

Tough sweep out there in AZ. We walked into a buzz saw. Also, Andruw Jones needs some greenies or something. Dude looks clueless at the plate. Russ Martin looks almost as terrible. u_u
