Should I just paste the entire Sandbox thread in here?

This can be the POST BARRY ZITO Hot Stove thread. Who else is left anyway? Jeff F'n Weaver? Who wants tacos?

Stuh-du-du-du-du-du-du-denka (jingleberries), Thursday, 4 January 2007 00:47 (eighteen years ago)

"Who else is left anyway? Jeff F'n Weaver? Who wants tacos? "

Odd enough, today I setup a new physician in our AD and systems with the same nom de plume as the taco man.

I thought Weaver had re-signed with the Cards, I did not realize he had not signed.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Thursday, 4 January 2007 04:25 (eighteen years ago)

He's waiting for that Zito-sized offer.

That's Mr. DERERRDERER to you!

Tho RJ's particular countenance could never be considered "ordinary."

mulder? pinieiro? craig wilson?

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Thursday, 4 January 2007 15:47 (eighteen years ago)

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 4 January 2007 19:09 (eighteen years ago)

i read that, too. well, at least this means they'll probably cut phelps loose.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Thursday, 4 January 2007 20:00 (eighteen years ago)

pinieiro's career line is actually kind of amazing. what other pitcher has gotten demonstrably worse for six years straight?

m@p (plosive), Thursday, 4 January 2007 22:09 (eighteen years ago)

Is he really set to be the Sox closer? Or is that a joke?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 4 January 2007 22:14 (eighteen years ago)

He's an option - they're paying him $4M to sit in the bullpen & hopefully not suck, w/ an extra $2M in bonuses if he finishes games. Worth a shot, tho $4M's a bit much for an iffy bullpen prospect that (as m@p notes) has been on a steady decline, & was (IIRC) one of the worst regularly-working starters in baseball last year.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 4 January 2007 22:17 (eighteen years ago)

http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news?slug=ap-yankees-johnson&prov=ap&type=lgns

"Arizona would send relief pitcher Luis Vizcaino to the Yankees along with minor league right-handers Ross Ohlendorf and Steven Jackson, and shortstop Alberto Gonzalez, another baseball official said, also on condition of anonymity. The Yankees also would pay between $1.5 million and $2 million of Johnson's $16 million salary this year."

This seems like a steal for the Diamondbacks, but what do I know. The Yankees really wanted to get rid of Johnson didn't they if 3 C grade prospects is the best they could for him, but Johnson still >>> Pettite I'd imagine.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 4 January 2007 23:55 (eighteen years ago)

Johnson still >>> Pettite

I'd say the positives and negatives and potential for disaster are about even, really.

If you fuck with Jimmy Mod, you call down the thunder (The Famous Jimmy Mod), Friday, 5 January 2007 01:13 (eighteen years ago)

Except for the fact that Pettite now has a two year deal and was pitching the last year in the AAAA league, I'd agree, I guess.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 5 January 2007 01:21 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, I re-thought about that... RJ was going 6.1-something innings/start last yr and giving up a almost 1 taco/game... so if he rly is healthy, then you could get 6+ innings out of him, depending on the game and one taco every OTHER game... it still seems like a big gamble (financially) to pick him up for the dbacks afaic.

If you fuck with Jimmy Mod, you call down the thunder (The Famous Jimmy Mod), Friday, 5 January 2007 01:33 (eighteen years ago)

$14M for one year (even for the Diamondbacks) isn't much of a risk though.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 5 January 2007 01:46 (eighteen years ago)

Plus it gets them back an established star who fans want to see. Like I said I think it's a good deal for them. Johnson's peripherals were pretty good last year. His ERA was mostly bad luck.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 5 January 2007 01:48 (eighteen years ago)

Has anyone gotten to the bottom of whether AZ can restructure all that deferred money they owe RJ now that hes back in the fold? I also wouldnt be surprised if he starts working for the franchise in some ownership/front office/coaching capacity once he retires.

Still not sure why anyone would really love to live in Arizona that much.

Stuh-du-du-du-du-du-du-denka (jingleberries), Friday, 5 January 2007 02:04 (eighteen years ago)

they're also giving him an 1 yr ext. i think

Not really Hot Stovey, but I'm not going to look for the Padres thread.

Jake Peavy was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct Thursday at Mobile Regional Airport.
The Mobile native was taken to the Mobile County Metro Jail shortly before 7 a.m. and was released on a $350 bond. The police failed to say why Peavy was arreseted, but Padres GM Kevin Towers told The Associated Press he was told that Peavy was headed for a goodwill tour of the Dominican Republic with other major league players when he double-parked to drop off his bags and was told by airport police to move his car. "The airport police told him he couldn't park his car there and he said, 'Write me up a ticket and I'll pay for it,'" Towers said. "He was arrested."

TORONTO -- John Thomson was surprisingly candid Wednesday about one of the reasons he chose the Toronto Blue Jays over the Mets: He didn't want to pitch to New York catcher Paul Lo Duca.

Thomson agreed to a $500,000, one-year contract with the Blue Jays on Tuesday and will get a chance to win a spot in their rotation during spring training. The right-hander said the Mets also offered a major league deal, but he wasn't interested.

"As far as just looking at Paul Lo Duca across the field, I'm not really into how he acts behind the plate," Thomson said on a conference call. "I know a bit about [Toronto catcher] Gregg Zaun and I know he wants to win and he's not going to let anything get in his way to do that, and I like that.

‘•’u (gear), Thursday, 11 January 2007 00:31 (eighteen years ago)

What is the deal with the cult of Greg Zaun. Didn't he used to write awful movie reviews somewhere.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Thursday, 11 January 2007 00:32 (eighteen years ago)

Oooh Bill Plaschke's GONNNA BE PISSED NOW!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 11 January 2007 00:51 (eighteen years ago)

Bill Plaschke wrote a relatively well reasoned article recently about how he thinks McGwire is being used as a scapegoat and I was SHOCKED.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Thursday, 11 January 2007 01:09 (eighteen years ago)

That is shocking.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 11 January 2007 01:16 (eighteen years ago)

how many times was Bonds' name mentioned in the article about Mark McGwire?

What is the deal with the cult of Greg Zaun. Didn't he used to write awful movie reviews somewhere.

I've never heard this before and I want it to be true so bad!

I'm not sure what you mean by "cult" tho - considering Lilly cited him as a big reason for leaving Toronto.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Thursday, 11 January 2007 05:03 (eighteen years ago)

his plate-blocking ability and hustle have made him a fan favourite in Toronto.

‘•’u (gear), Thursday, 11 January 2007 05:47 (eighteen years ago)

I've never heard this before and I want it to be true so bad!

Here is it, from Baseball Prospectus's bio for him:

Some of the world's least demanding jobs: Bruce Willis's hair stylist, O.J. Simpson Fan Club chairman, Scott Baio's casting agent, ESPN movie critic, backup catcher to Pudge Rodriguez. Gregg Zaun has exactly the right skill set for one of those. He’ll back up Brad Ausmus in Detroit, having traded jobs with Bill Haselman.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Thursday, 11 January 2007 07:27 (eighteen years ago)

I would think that Scott Baio's casting agent would have to hustle pretty hard to get him work.

A's trade Kirk Saarlos (sp?) to the Reds for David Shafer (who has some pretty amazing peripherals):
http://www.thebaseballcube.com/players/S/david-shafer.shtml

and APTBNL.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 22:54 (eighteen years ago)

There are two players to be named later on this, but Shafer looks good to me on first glance.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 22:55 (eighteen years ago)

He is not on BP's Reds' top ten prospect list however.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 22:57 (eighteen years ago)

He is 18 on John Sickles' list though.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 23:12 (eighteen years ago)

Getting anything of potential value for Kirk Saarloos (also sic?) is a steal.

Best NYT headline in a long while:

3 Weeks to Pitchers and Molinas

Unfortunately, it's just a piece on the Molina brothers, and not an attempt to make 'Molina' a slang term for 'catcher'.

g00blar (gooblar), Monday, 29 January 2007 18:34 (eighteen years ago)

Helton to Red Sox deal in the works with the Rockies apparently covering maybe half of his remaining salary and Lowell, Tavarez, Hansen and whoever else the Red Sox can scrape together listed as the possible bait. This deal seems like it could backfire badly for both teams.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 29 January 2007 19:31 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, I wouldn't want the Sox to pick Helton up unless it costs them very little (personnel-wise), and the Rockies pick up the lion's share of the tab. & if those planets somehow align, I have to wonder what the Rockies are thinking. Especially since Helton totally fits in with the God's Baseball mentality that the ownership is so fond of.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 29 January 2007 19:38 (eighteen years ago)

Tavarez otoh...

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 29 January 2007 20:09 (eighteen years ago)

helton is done, too. dude hasn't put up numbers worthy of his salary in three years.

roger goodell (gear), Monday, 29 January 2007 20:27 (eighteen years ago)

Rumor has it that this is a Lucchino move through & through. I'd hope Theo wouldn't wanna be tied down to a 1B w/ back troubles, Chron's disease, and a 5-year deal, unless the price was juuuust right.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 29 January 2007 20:38 (eighteen years ago)

helton is done, too.

Yeah, he isn't as good as Youkilis right now. Maybe he just wasn't healthy but I don't think so.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Tuesday, 30 January 2007 07:46 (eighteen years ago)
