The Braves game is open to guests, but given your specialization in race jokes I thought you'd be aiming for Cobb's grave.

SABR and the Magnolia Chapter have lined up some fabulous side trips in conjunction with SABR40 in Atlanta, August 5 - 8. The side trips include:

* Ty Cobb Museum and Gravesite in Royston, Ga. Thursday, August 5. Bus leaves hotel at 2:30 pm. $19 includes round-trip bus fare and admittance to the museum. Slots are going fast!

*Joe Jackson Museum/Greenville (SC) Drive Game - Saturday, August 7. Bus leaves hotel at 2:45. $29 includes round-trip bus fare, admittance to the Museum and the game (vs. the Rome Braves.) The museum is small, but they have promised to have a couple of special items on display just for SABR members! The ballpark is right across the street from the stadium.

*Rickwood Field in Birmingham. Sunday, August 8. Bus leaves the hotel at 9am. $27 includes round-trip bus fare, the chance to tour the ballpark and throw the ball around on the field, and a ballpark lunch. David Brewer of the Friends of Rickwood is also planning to have a former player or two there as well as some memorabilia exhibitors. The bus should return to the hotel in Atlanta between 6:30 and 7:00. Yes, Sunday is normally get-away day at the convention, but if you can stay over one more day (or fly home later that evening), the Rickwood trip will be a special treat!

also, the Friday night game vs SF, the Braves are retiring Glavine's number. Naturally as someone who witnessed his Mets' finale I have mixed feelings about attending...

sanskrit, Wednesday, 19 May 2010 20:56 (fifteen years ago)

I've read stuff about his fandom (and I think SNY did a feature on him last year or two), but don't remember SABR membership. Certainly never saw him at conventions.

I looked in the directory and he's not listed. This is his site tho:

In case you missed the news, Hall of Famer Phil Niekro has been added to the Braves "Worst to First" roundtable at SABR40! The roundtable, hosted by Pete Van Wieren, also includes Bobby Cox and Mark Lemke. It is scheduled for Friday, August 6 at 9:30 am.

Why is Niekro on the Worst-to-First panel? you might ask. While he wasn't pitching for the Braves then, : he can provide insight into the evolution of the Braves from perennial doormat to perennial contender and also managed the Richmond Braves 1991 club, including many of the players who would later keep "the streak" going.

Some of these competing presentations are hard to choose between. e.g., Friday noon?

Are you going on the Rickwood Field trip?

My totem animal is a hamburger. (WmC), Tuesday, 27 July 2010 14:38 (fifteen years ago)

If they got enough reservations to do it, yeah! It's kinda crazy, considering there's no game, but I figure it'll be the only time I'll ever be in Alabama.

kind of shrill and very self-righteous (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 27 July 2010 14:41 (fifteen years ago)

Rickwood Field or any historical (especially non-MLB) ballparks you have visited

This year, we are experimenting with live streaming of selected presentations and events. Follow SABR's Twitter feed or become a fan on Facebook in order to see what presentations are being streamed.

Rob Neyer sighted, not Bill James yet.

Guy did a presentation on baseball in Peanuts: CB's team went (estimated) 15-274. Someone asked what Charlie Brown's matchup record vs Peppermint Patty was.

Neyer's update (I too was amazed at a one-third empty ballpark for a first-place team):

Dave (Retrosheet) Smith did a prez on outs made on the bases; sitting in my row were Bill James and ex-Marlins mgr Fredi Gonzalez.

Braves panel this morning w/ Cox, Phil Niekro, Ron Gant, Mark Lemke. Cox described taking Chipper over Van Popprl in the '90 draft; Chipz told teams, "Don't believe it when you hear I'm going to college, I'm not."

kind of shrill and very self-righteous (Dr Morbius), Friday, 6 August 2010 21:22 (fifteen years ago)

Don't know what Gant was like on the Braves panel, but he makes any telecast he's on unlistenable. Nuke Laloosh-level cliché-spewing.

My totem animal is a hamburger. (WmC), Friday, 6 August 2010 22:04 (fifteen years ago)

He was amusing and anecdotal, but Cox did most of the talking (Van Wieren moderated).

I assumed the SABR game was like poker. Lots of old dudes but a new breed of thrusting 20-year-olds inventing nth-level new stats and making the seniors tut into their OBP. But maybe I just read too much Fangraphs.

Mark C, Monday, 9 August 2010 16:23 (fifteen years ago)

I did see a presentation (on southern-style promotion events) by an NYU junior, there are always some younger folks.

kind of shrill and very self-righteous (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 02:32 (fifteen years ago)

and again, most members don't understand regression analyses.

kind of shrill and very self-righteous (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 02:32 (fifteen years ago)

ie, PLEASE JOIN, younger people. The one-year rate is $65, only $45 for those under age 30. That's an obscene bargain; the publications you get w/ the membership every year alone are worth at least $40.

if i am not a SABR membor can I go to convention? it it like an up with people show?

Astronaut Mike Dexter (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 14:25 (fifteen years ago)

You can go to the ballgame with a member, but no, we wear name/city SABR badges for the presentations/events! We need convention revenue from registration.
