is there an online resource containing/documenting his argument/hearing? I'm mobile and didn't find much and a coworker mentioned something about it.

I can't find anything that references it at all. Would he even have been eligible for arbitration in 1986?

he's probably referring to this from a mlb.com story:

In 1986, former Royals star pitcher Bret Saberhagen, coming off a World Series championship season, pontificated so well during his hearing that he not only won his case but the arbiter asked for, and received, an autograph from the player.
