I think he had an extra base hit once, he might have advanced on a throw but he definitely swung the bat and ended up on second. it was pretty awesome.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Friday, 2 February 2007 02:31 (eighteen years ago)

He owns a .239 career batting average with 67 home runs and 443 RBIs in 1,305 games

Apparently .239 lifetime will get you 8+ seasons worth of work in a MLB uniform and a guaranteed contract.

You're talking about a GM who traded Francisco Liriano, Boof Bonser and Joe Nathan away for one (lousy) season of AJ Pierzynski.

"This is not a shoulder, a knee or an elbow," Matheny said on a conference call. "We're talking about the brain. ... I didn't expect this. I don't think anybody did."

Folks will put up w/ a lot of outs if you can play defense, cultivate a defensive rep, and Lead By Example (w/ your defense) - see one Brad Ausmus.

I think that is called the Jim Sundberg award.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) -- Rick Helling is retiring from baseball after pitching in the major leagues for 12 years, highlighted by a 20-win season.

Has to be the most obscure/least talented 20 game winner in the past say 25 years. I mean when i saw the blurb, i was like "Helling......Helling?.... yeah, sort of remember him, didn't he retire a few years ago...."
To be fair, he had his best years with the Texas Rangers, not a team I pay any attention to

swift is a "good" one

Danny Jackson is the winner for me of those choices.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 17:45 (eighteen years ago)

jackson had a couple of brutal years, but helling's era in his 20 game year was like 4.41

Helling actually had decent/good(!!!) peripherals in his last 2.5 seasons.

Danny Jackson pitched well in the playoffs for the Reds in 90 and Royals in 85 on the way to winning a couple world series. After his career got off to a good start, the guy couldn't stay healthy after having his big season in 88, but being a lefty he stuck in the bigs for nearly another decade.

Or see National League :(

4 gold gloves for Matheny! Plus he cut himself with a hunting knife to continue awesome st. louis tradition of freak playoff injuries.

the randy tomlin card is confusing me cuz he retired over a decade ago and he never won 20 games....

also, if castilla had put up those career stats in a non-coors environment, he'd actually get some hall consideration.

timmy tannin (pompous), Thursday, 8 February 2007 04:05 (eighteen years ago)

And if a donkey did the same, he'd be President of Ecuador in a movie starring Richard Dreyfuss.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 8 February 2007 04:39 (eighteen years ago)

ha, just making the super obvious point that coors stats are k-razee and if you look at castilla's numbers totally out of context, they seem very solid. and wondering who will get into cooperstown DESPITE being a rockie (helton?)

timmy tannin (pompous), Thursday, 8 February 2007 04:55 (eighteen years ago)

yeah i just felt like posting a randy tomlin card, sorry to throw you off
