Ozzie said he had a good talk with Rios and told his outfielder to "give me 50 stolen bases and three home runs."

WOODJOCK!?!?!?

I stopped by The Venue in Scottsdale for about an hour last night to check out the rehearsal for Thursday night's Woodjock, 2010, Jake Peavy's charity concert, presented by mycontent.com.

As soon as I arrived, I noticed an interesting looking band on the stage working tirelessly on an Eric Clapton song. There was Bronson Arroyo on vocals, Brandon Medders on lead guitar and Bernie Williams on backup lead guitar. Oh, yes, I can't forget Barry Zito on the drums.

And they basically rocked, for lack of a better word. I was told that overall rehearsal session ran about four hours.

"I think people are going to be surprised by this show," said Peavy, who was overseeing the rehearsal at the time I was there, sort of hinting how fans might not expect these players to be accomplished musicians.

Actually, I don't think people will be surprised. These players taking part in the concert have the same sort of passion for music as they do for baseball, and they are pretty darn good baseball players. I expect a highly entertaining show, with a raucous crowd at this venue that has a very Old West feel to it.

Focusing on the White Sox theme, aside from the obvious front man in Peavy, both Omar Vizquel and Gordon Beckham will be singing. Ben Broussard, who was in White Sox camp last year and is now a touring musician, also will be performing his music. You can bet on many White Sox players being in the audience to lend support.

Are these players as talented behind the microphone as they are on the field? Aside from Williams, the most accomplished of the group, and Broussard, probably not. From the little I witnessed last night, though, this show truly is worth checking out on Thursday. Remember, the proceeds go to Team Focus, Strikeouts for Troops, White Sox Charities and Autism Speaks, so it's good music for a good cause, or as the show bills itself, "a big league jam fest."

http://www.suntimes.com/sports/baseball/whitesox/2380948,CST-SPT-sox11.article

After the White Sox' 3-0 victory over the Detroit Tigers, the Sun-Times was told by a team source that general manager Ken Williams and manager Ozzie Guillen ''almost came to blows in a heated shouting match'' on Tuesday evening because of the draft fallout of Guillen's youngest son, Ozney.

One source indicated that Williams was instructed by Reinsdorf not to travel on road trips -- which he hasn't -- to avoid any confrontation with Guillen. But a confrontation couldn't be avoided Tuesday. Guillen watched Ozney slip to the 22nd round in the draft before the Sox selected him. Guillen then commented, ''I give my kid 50 grand just to go to school (at the University of South Florida rather than sign with the Sox). I got 50 grand in my pocket to send my kid to go to Niketown or buy something.''

According to the source, that comment led to Williams questioning Guillen to his face, and the situation got heated.

Andy K, Friday, 11 June 2010 13:54 (fifteen years ago)

Does that count as hood rich?

Astronaut Mike Dexter (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Friday, 11 June 2010 14:08 (fifteen years ago)

The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Friday, 11 June 2010 16:02 (fifteen years ago)

This is utterly fucking stupid. Your kid should play baseball better if you want him to get drafted higher.

mayor jingleberries, Friday, 11 June 2010 16:28 (fifteen years ago)

http://www.chicagobreakingsports.com/2010/06/sox-use-22nd-round-pick-on-ozney-guillen-who-appears-usf-bound.html

It was less than a consolation prize to the Guillen family when youngest son Ozney was selected in the 22nd round -- much later than the family anticipated -- by the White Sox.

"It's not a happy day for us, but in the meanwhile, we got to go through it and move on," said father and Sox manager Ozzie Guillen, who intimated that his son may enroll this summer at the University of South Florida, where he has a scholarship to play baseball.

The Guillen family anticipated that Ozney, a left-handed hitting outfielder at Monsignor Pace High in Miami Gardens, could be drafted by the 10th round. But that never materialized and made for a long day for the Guillen family as the Sox and the other 29 teams passed on Guillen through the first 21 rounds.
The round that Ozney was selected was particularly sensitive because the Sox selected Hialeah High School third baseman Rangel Ravello in the sixth round. Ravello played with the youngest Guillen on a traveling team but wasn't as highly regarded as Guillen, according to those familiar with the prospects in the area.

The sixth round also is where the Sox selected Ken Williams Jr., the son of general manager Ken Williams, in the 2008 draft. Williams received a $150,000 bonus but has been hindered by injuries and is batting only .228 in 23 games at Class-A Winston-Salem.

A source said that Major League Baseball recommends that no player drafted after the 10th round receive a signing bonus of more than $125,000.

"I give my kid 50 grand just to go to school," the elder Guillen said. "I got 50 grand in my pocket to send my kid to go to Niketown or buy something. I don't need the money. But I respect scouts. I respect the scouts' opinion with all my heart.

"I hope the 20 guys they picked before help us or help the White Sox, and everyone has different opinion, and I respect their opinion. And now I talked to (sons) Ozzie and Oney, and we might think about family, not baseball. But I'm a baseball man. And I'm a very (big) baseball man. I saw him play and I saw him compete against a lot of people out there and I think this kid, it might help him to improve himself in a lot of situation

If Ozney Guillen doesn't sign, he won't be eligible for the amateur draft until 2013 unless he leaves USF after his freshman year, enrolls at a junior college and becomes eligible for the 2012 draft.

"I think the 22nd round in high school doesn't mean anything," Ozzie Guillen said. "I think the White Sox did what I told them ... I don't need any favors or he doesn't need any favors. In the meanwhile, it's kind of hard. His expectations, not mine, were a little higher. He thought he was a little better player than what other people think."

Andy K, Friday, 11 June 2010 16:28 (fifteen years ago)

Peavy hadn't been throwing AT ALL between starts (according to MLBN) and is now likely headed to DL. How many pitchers work through pain like that without aggravating an existing problem?

Peavy described a severe injury Wednesday, saying the muscle has apparently torn completely away from the bone. He said surgery is likely, and he could be gone for the season.

Hawk was pretty hilarious on the broadcast last night, he got really riled up by Delmon Young trying to take off AJ Pierzynski's head (what was up with that?), then when Thome hit the gamewinning home run I don't think either Hawk or Stone said a word in the minute or two before the game went to commercial.

I'm pretty worried about this team; really they've only had a bad couple of weeks but in those weeks they lost to some bad teams (Detroit and Baltimore). Plus as awesome as their June run was, it seemed really unbelievable/unsustainable given that this team is all old dudes and kinda low/mid-level guys ... no superstars, no one you can depend on to be consistent.

Before the Twins pulled away with a five-run eighth inning, once-formidable slugger Manny Ramirez stranded runners in scoring position in the first, fourth and seventh innings with three strikeouts.

Ramirez hasn't driven in a run in 37 at-bats with the Sox.

"That's part of the game," Ramirez said of his inability to drive in runners in scoring position. "Sometimes they're going to put (a runner) on third base, and you're not going to bring it in. And sometimes they're going to be on first base with two outs, and you bring them in. That's part of the game."
