sometimes when i am conflicted abt which matchup is best/who to start, i look at where i'm behind in the matchups and where i think i need to put up more numbers, and then start the dude who i think will mb produce more there? like in this league walks and *intentional* walks are stats, and i have barry and pronk. so even when they are sucking (which they are) (fucking hafner) i still start them and get hell of BBs~
― cankles, Friday, 27 July 2007 22:57 (eighteen years ago)
this guy in my league had a draft so good that it makes me wanna puke. keep in mind that this was held back in MARCH:
JENN-AIR GRILLZ 1. (1) Albert Pujols 2. (24) Grady Sizemore 3. (25) Jimmy Rollins 4. (48) B.J. Ryan 5. (49) Adam Dunn 6. (72) John Lackey 7. (73) Ryan Zimmerman 8. (96) Cole Hamels 9. (97) C.C. Sabathia 10. (120) Dan Haren 11. (121) Mike Piazza 12. (144) Eric Gagne 13. (145) Brad Hawpe 14. (168) Kelvim Escobar 15. (169) Prince Fielder 16. (192) Ian Kinsler 17. (193) Dave Bush 18. (216) Joel Zumaya 19. (217) Brad Penny 20. (240) Orlando Hudson 21. (241) Shane Victorino 22. (264) Alex Gordon
― cankles, Monday, 30 July 2007 12:37 (eighteen years ago)
Prince Fielder slipped to the 15th round? No wonder his draft was so good, he knew he was drafting against a whole bunch of addled stoners.
― Dimension 5ive, Monday, 30 July 2007 12:41 (eighteen years ago)
either that/and it's a 5 team league.
― j.q higgins, Monday, 30 July 2007 13:07 (eighteen years ago)
Well Ryan is out for the season, Zumaya's also injured & Piazza just got off a long stint on the dl! But overall that is pretty gross.
― The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Monday, 30 July 2007 14:28 (eighteen years ago)
12 teams, i wasnt there or i sure as shit wouldnt have taken santana with my first pick. also 10 of those 12 people are retarded and/or women. the second overall pick was... ivan rodriguez. i shit you not. a-rod went in the second round.
tbh fielder wasnt on my radar at all coming into this season, i mean i know he was ranked higher pre-season but still.
piazza's been mashing it since he finally came back!
― cankles, Monday, 30 July 2007 15:50 (eighteen years ago)
Oh i know - he's on me team!

― The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Thursday, 30 August 2007 14:29 (eighteen years ago)
Oh, Thermopaws. Complain only after you fall 25 points in the standings, from first to 6th place, where I am in dire need of changing my "smack talk."
On the bright side, at least my new cellar dwelling has given me the freedom to add my team's namesake to the roster, finally! And to spell his name correctly.
― Leee, Thursday, 30 August 2007 16:20 (eighteen years ago)
Well - true, I wasn't in a 25 point free-fall, but my slippage was made more troublesome by the fact I actually have a good team. ;)
― The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Thursday, 30 August 2007 19:33 (eighteen years ago)
Looks like I'll hit my maximums at OF and UTIL with about 10 days left in the season. I don't understand how that happened -- I never played more than one person per day in any position, so how am I 22 games over my max?
― Rock Hardy, Sunday, 9 September 2007 23:23 (eighteen years ago)
because there are not exactly 162 calendar days in a 162-game season
― Dimension 5ive, Monday, 10 September 2007 03:12 (eighteen years ago)
Oh shit, I think I see what you're saying. So, on off days I needed to make sure I moved players to the bench, and leave the positions unfilled? I didn't even think of that.
― Rock Hardy, Monday, 10 September 2007 03:51 (eighteen years ago)
guys can we talk playoff STRATEGY?? i am matched against the no 1 seed this week and he is killing me (5-7 rn). the stats in the league are super weird:
batting: R, H, 3B, HR, RBI, SB, CS, BB, IBB, K, TB, E
pitching: W, L, CG, SHO, SV, HR, BB, HBP, K, WP
a bunch of these are non predictive (complete games, triples etc), which i hate. anyway my hitting is pretty competetive but his pitching is infinitely better than mine. the thing i noticed tho is that there's 5 negative pitching stats as opposed to 2 for batting. that's half of the 10 pitching stats. i'm trying to figure out if attempting to compete in wins, k's and saves (basically the only positive stats i have any control over) is worth risking the possibility of racking up a ton of negative stats. man i dunno!!!!!
(i understand why H2H is so cool now - even if you had a mediocre season, if you make the playoffs anything's possible. catching up in roto is a long-term project)
― cankles, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 23:06 (eighteen years ago)

― Rock Hardy, Friday, 14 September 2007 15:28 (eighteen years ago)
oh my god i am so furious right now. i had the most epic george mason-style matchup last week, my shitty ass team against the number one seed - i didnt have a shot!!!! but i scrapped and clawed my way from being 7-2 to tying it up at 8-8 yesterday... ONLY TO LOSE THE FUCKING SHITBAG TIEBREAKER.
In the event that a playoff game ends in a tie, the deadlock will be broken using the following system:(See below if your league does not use one or more of the following categories.) 1. Lowest team ERA. 2. Highest team AVG. 3. Lowest team WHIP. 4. Most team HR. 5. Most team wins. 6. Most team RBI. 7. Most team saves. 8. Most team runs. 9. Most team SO. 10. Most team SB. 11. Random "coin flip."

it came down to most team wins, which I had zero of because I made the strategic decision to bench all my starters halfway thru the week - his pitching was too competetive for me to take on, so i figured i'd let him pile up the negative pitching stats. we tied in homers tho and then i got assfucked. so pissed rn~

i did like a mets style swan dive in september
― bnw, Sunday, 30 September 2007 18:42 (eighteen years ago)
I am admittedly mediocre like the Phillies with an offense that went nuts in the second half and a pitching staff that kept me in it by some sort of miracle.
― NoTimeBeforeTime, Sunday, 30 September 2007 21:22 (eighteen years ago)
Although I have to say, no matter what happens today, that I think I did a good job in piecing together that pitching staff. If I lose, it's because I panicked (possibly with good reason though) when nobody was hitting in May-June and benched my SB guys, hoping to rack up more power numbers (which didn't happen at the time).
― NoTimeBeforeTime, Sunday, 30 September 2007 21:33 (eighteen years ago)
ah well, you earned the lightfoot cup this year, dude.
i'd have to say i'm disapointed i didn't do better. i had the hands down best pitching staff and was either 1st or 2nd place for most the year and couldn't keep it together. i'm pretty sure when i wake up tomorrow i'll still be in 4th.
― The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Sunday, 30 September 2007 23:46 (eighteen years ago)
Tied for 5th, unless points are adjusted later. I can live with that in my first year, even with that weeklong taste of 1st place. Solid in most categories, def. need to draft smarter for offense next year.
― Rock Hardy, Monday, 1 October 2007 01:13 (eighteen years ago)
in hindsight i dont' think our trade was the best thing for my team :(
― The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Monday, 1 October 2007 01:39 (eighteen years ago)
I'd say Maggs was a definite improvement for me, and worth the Peavy.
― Rock Hardy, Monday, 1 October 2007 02:19 (eighteen years ago)
Considering that your pitching staffs headed in opposite directions after the trade, I'd say that the trade did exactly what it was expected to do. I think RH overestimated his pitching staff and underestimated his hitters. At the time, I personally would have traded Penny or Beckett at the peak of their value (which could have brought approximately the same return), but then again those guys didn't crash in the 2nd half like many people thought they would so what the hell do I know.

Seriously though, nice job. It was a fun season.

well i don't see what the big hassle was with being commissioner. i don't mind taking care of the '08 league if we're all still down - i'll start a thread for it in the new year and we can sort out how we want it to work. in advance! c'est bon?
congrats again BNW, even tho we were short on managers it was a fun season!
