This is your last reminder for the New Jersey SABR regional research conference
this Saturday March 3 at the Yogi Berra Museum in Little Falls. Professor
Lawrence Hogan is our keynote speaker and Jim Bouton heads our Vintage baseball
panel. The program begins at 9:30 AM.

Roberta Newman “Baseball, Advertising, and Race Before the Negro Leagues”

Also, Dan Scholssberg who is on our author's panel will talk about his new book
"Baseball Gold: Mining Nuggets from Our National Pastime" in addition to his
best sellers on Milo Hamilton and Ron Blomberg ("Designated Hebrew")

There will be ball park food for purchase and a great raffle of books, ballgame
tickets and other items.

A voluntary donation of $5 for SABR members and $10 for guests and the general
public. No reservations are needed.

Baseball America Editors to appear at Borders Books & Music in New York City
Thursday, March 29, 2007, 1:00 p.m.


• Co-editors in chief, Will Lingo and John Manuel, will host a special program at the Borders Books & Music store in New York City at 100 Broadway on Thursday, March 29 at 1 p.m.

• Experts will host panel discussion on upcoming Major League Baseball season & top prospects featured in Baseball America's 2007 Prospect Handbook.

• From Yankees' right-hander Phillip Hughes to Mets right-handed pitcher Mike Pelfrey, Baseball America's editors will discuss baseball's stars of tomorrow. Lingo and Manuel will preview the 2007 Major League Baseball season, discuss Baseball America's 2007 Prospect Handbook, field questions from the audience and sign copies of the new book.

April 4: Varsity Letters Reading Series


New York's Varsity Letters sports reading series returns on April 4 at 8 p.m. with on all-baseball night in honor of the return of the national pastime. At this free monthly event at a Lower East Side bar, hosted by Gelf, Steven Goldman, Jonah Keri, Curt Smith and Cor van den Heuvel will read from and talk about their work, and take questions.

Steven Goldman and Jonah Keri will discuss two Baseball Prospectus books that unveil surprising insights about the game. Longtime Yankees broadcaster Mel Allen is the subject of Curt Smith's recent biography. And Cor van den Heuvel will read haikus and senryus from a new collection of poetry about the sport. Check back here before the event for interviews with the night's guests.

Admission is FREE. Please spread the word to sports fans and book lovers.

five months pass...

On Saturday Sept. 15 (2-4 p.m.) Monte Irvin will be at the Yogi Berra Museum & Learning Center for a discussion (along with co-author Phil Pepe) and signing of his new book,"Few and Chosen."

On Tuesday Sept. 25 (1- 3 p.m.) the Museum will celebrate the life and career of Phil Rizzuto (on what would've been his 90th birthday) with remembrances from Marty Appel, Bill Madden, Ed Lucas, Fran Healy and Patricia Rizzuto (Phil's daughter). Suggested donation is $20, with proceeds to benefit the St. Joseph's School of the Blind.

The panel will focus on the impact of baseball parks on neighborhoods and cities, using the era examined in the exhibition The Glory Days: New York Baseball, 1947-1957 as a springboard for discussion. Topics to be covered include:

- stadium design and the architectural features of some of the old and new baseball parks

- the financing of new parks

- the impact of new baseball parks on the local economy

John Pastier (an architecture critic and author of Historic Ballparks: A
Panoramic Vision): New York City ball parks of the 1947-1957 era, their
architectural and cultural significance. What was unique about the designs of these stadiums?

Janet Marie Smith (Senior Vice President of Planning and Development for the Boston Red Sox and architect behind the redesign of Fenway Park): contemporary issues in ballpark design; changes in ball parks since the Glory Days; a behind-the-scenes perspective on the design process.

Andrew Zimbalist (professor of economics at Smith College, stadium
consultant, and author of In The Best Interests of Baseball? and Equal Play: Title IX and Social Change): financing ball park construction; economic impact of parks their neighborhoods and cities.
