I haven't played in a couple of years and decided to start a league at work. My draft was a mess. Before I knew it, I had drafted 4 Angels. That can't be good. Weak closers, too. I picked 5th in a 9 team league. At least the FA market is pretty good.

1. (5) Carlos Beltrán OF
2. (14) Vladimir Guerrero OF
3. (23) Roy Oswalt SP
4. (32) Justin Morneau 1B
5. (41) Chone Figgins 2B,3B,OF
6. (50) John Smoltz SP
7. (59) Julio Lugo 2B,3B,SS
8. (68) John Lackey SP
9. (77) Álex Ríos OF
10. (86) Orlando Cabrera SS
11. (95) Mike Piazza C
12. (104) Cole Hamels SP
13. (113) Erik Bedard SP
14. (122) Willy Taveras OF
15. (131) Octavio Dotel RP
16. (140) José Valverde RP
17. (149) B.J. Upton 3B
18. (158) Michael Cuddyer 1B,OF
19. (167) Russell Martin C
20. (176) John Patterson SP
21. (185) Kerry Wood SP

The last pick was a joke. ha ha ha.

Jeff, Sunday, 4 March 2007 20:51 (eighteen years ago)

I guess I would hope to have a better team than that in a 9 team league, but you have plenty of good players. Undervaluing saves is always a good idea. Oswalt/Smoltz/Lackey/Hamel are a nice 1-4. I think you should trade some of your speed for power.

Oakland Mike, Monday, 5 March 2007 23:51 (eighteen years ago)

Considering dropping Upton for Edwin Encarnacion. Lose speed, but probably improve every other area. Plus Encarnacion has pretty much a solid spot in the line up.

Jeff, Saturday, 10 March 2007 22:47 (eighteen years ago)

Do it.

three weeks pass...
As you'll see, my outfield is held together by thumbtacks at this point, but I've got a lot of depth at SP and catcher (league rules require two starting catchers). This is a 13-team 4x4 Sportsline keeper league (R, RBI, OBP, SLG; ERA, WHIP, W, SV; 28-man rosters plus DL), which means that everybody's stretched pretty thin; I'm not all that worried about only having two closers at this point, but I gotta find better OF options than Sosa and Hamilton.

C Joe Mauer
C Victor Martinez
1B Albert Pujols
2B/SS Julio Lugo
1B/3B/OF Aubrey Huff
3B Mike Lowell
SS Carlos Guillen
SS Stephen Drew
1B Conor Jackson
OF Jim Edmonds
OF Brian Giles
OF Josh Hamilton
OF Matt Holliday
OF Gary Matthews
OF Sammy Sosa
OF Lastings Milledge

SP Bronson Arroyo
SP Homer Bailey
SP Josh Beckett
SP A.J. Burnett
SP Daniel Cabrera
SP Jose Contreras
RP Brian Fuentes
SP Matt Garza
RP Tom Gordon
SP Kei Igawa
SP Kevin Millwood
SP Anibal Sanchez

dude in a keeper league you're lookin' pretty good with Jackson, Holliday, Bailey, Garza, Sanchez, Igawa, maybe Milledge...but how the holy hell did you end up with Pujols, Mauer, Martinez, Guillen and Lowell in a 14-team league? THEFT I TELL YOU THEFT

I would start Edmonds Holliday Sosa in the OF, Sammy will come out larruppin' the ball for the first two months at least.

Dimension 5ive, Sunday, 1 April 2007 14:57 (eighteen years ago)

A little context: our league's keeper rules are up to four players per team, two-round pick inflation per year, two years max per keeper (ie. I picked Joe Mauer in the seventh round two years ago; this year I gave up a #3 for him). My keepers/picks surrendered:

#3 Joe Mauer
#6 Matt Holliday
#23 Stephen Drew
#24 Bronson Arroyo

Needless to say I picked first, and managed to land Martinez at the end of the second round after a series of totally baffling picks and a mini-closer run in the late second. Couldn't be happier about that, as catcher depth was nonexistent this year (McCann was somebody else's keeper, and the second-best catcher platoon is he and Michael Barrett - below that it gets ugly fast). People overvalued prospects a ton this year, but I managed to get some good solid depth in the later rounds - Sanchez in 17, Contreras in 18, Cabrera in 19, Igawa in 21, Lowell in 25. I'm willing to let this one germinate, especially given the keeper depth I have (Drew and Arroyo are mine another year if I want them, and Garza, Bailey, Milledge, and Hamilton were all taken in the 20th round onward). Besides the outfield, the only real regret I have was not grabbing Francisco Liriano or Pedro Martinez (both taken in the 24th round) as DL keepers.

So my fantasy team in the MLB head-to-head league turned out like this:

P Astros
C M. Barrett
1B R. Howard
2B J. Barfield
3B A. Ramirez
SS B. Hall
OF V. Wells
OF A. Soriano
OF M. Ordonez
Bn Blue Jays
Bn P. Fielder
Bn H. Kendrick
Bn C. Tracy
Bn S. Drew
Bn J. Francoeur

Not bad for 12 deep, if I do say so myself!
And with the pitching, instead of picking a bunch of individual pitchers you just grab an entire staff. i've never seen that before.

two weeks pass...
I'm torn with what to do with my non ILBB team...
Kendrick, my 2nd base guy, is on the DL and my backup is Barfield who is Barf-tastic right now. Do I drop sir Barfsalot - pick up and play Kelly Johnson? I have this gut feeling the Barfmeister will turn things around but I don't know if i can afford to wait.

The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Monday, 23 April 2007 14:56 (eighteen years ago)

If Kelly Johnson is available PICK HIM UP NOW! If you can DL Kendrick & open up a roster spot, I wouldn't worry about dropping anyone. Otherwise, I'd probably cut bait on someone else besides Barfy (but if you're in a league where Kelly Johnson's still on the waiver wire, dropping Barfy's probably fine).

David R., Monday, 23 April 2007 15:03 (eighteen years ago)

There's no Dl with this league! And the only rosterspot I'm willing to open up for KJ belongs to Barfolio. So, I'm inclined to agree with you David, time to put The Barf out to pasture!

The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Monday, 23 April 2007 15:08 (eighteen years ago)

some dude in my league (this league has trades approved by vote) just swung a deal, jeff francoeur and orlando hudson for chase utley. this league sucks.

félix pié, Monday, 23 April 2007 18:36 (eighteen years ago)

You should have the other managers shot for allowing such a move to happen.

David R., Monday, 23 April 2007 18:44 (eighteen years ago)

i think half of them don't even pay attention, which is the problem when you're in an office league padded out with fairweather baseball fans.

félix pié, Monday, 23 April 2007 18:53 (eighteen years ago)

I don't see what's so terrible abt that trade!

The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Monday, 23 April 2007 18:57 (eighteen years ago)

That could be ORNALDO BLOOMPS instead of Hudson, and it wouldn't make sense! Utley's the best 2nd baseman in the NL (if not all of baseball) by a wiiiiiiiiide margin, and to get him for Jeffty "I Hit A Light .260 And Do Airline Commercials" Francoeur and Orlando Hudson's great glove (& mediocre bat) is laughable.

David R., Monday, 23 April 2007 19:02 (eighteen years ago)

francoeur is a fifth OF in an eight team league and hudson shouldn't even be on fantasy teams in this league.

félix pié, Monday, 23 April 2007 19:07 (eighteen years ago)

AND THAT HOLY SHIT

David R., Monday, 23 April 2007 19:08 (eighteen years ago)

the dude who's getting utley, i don't know him but i don't like him. he swung a trade early in the season, getting hanley ramirez for jason giambi and josh beckett which is a perfectly alright trade if josh beckett wasn't more potential than actuality and if giambi was still putting up .330/40/120 seasons.

félix pié, Monday, 23 April 2007 19:12 (eighteen years ago)

hanley ramirez aka almost-as-good-as-jose reyes

félix pié, Monday, 23 April 2007 19:13 (eighteen years ago)

That trade seems a little goofy, too, but from the 1 end, not the 2 end - expecting Han-Ram to do what he did last year is a bit ridiculous. (I am totally ignoring his current hot start, because I just saw pics of him in his Red Sox minor league uni, which makes me u_u)

David R., Monday, 23 April 2007 19:22 (eighteen years ago)

i dunno, i think hanley in the fantasy world is def top 25 material and those other two are more easily replaceable.

félix pié, Monday, 23 April 2007 20:13 (eighteen years ago)

but those red sox unis raise my doubts (O_o)

félix pié, Monday, 23 April 2007 20:13 (eighteen years ago)

SHOULD I DO THIS TRADE:

I have: Jason Isringhausen and Mark Buehreleejee

For: Mariano Rivera

Jeff, Friday, 27 April 2007 21:06 (eighteen years ago)

i'm going to say "no" esp. after tonight

félix pié, Saturday, 28 April 2007 03:01 (eighteen years ago)

nu-uh!

The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Saturday, 28 April 2007 19:06 (eighteen years ago)

I was waiting till after last night. That sealed it for me. I could have gotten a hit off of him.
