I don't even know for sure who's on these teams this spring.

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 19:55 (eighteen years ago)

i like the twinkies.

Steve Shasta, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 21:09 (eighteen years ago)

without the Power of Liriano??

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 21:14 (eighteen years ago)

I picked the Indians with absolutely no confidence. The only team I am sure won't win are the Royals. Everyone else is a toss up.

Alex in SF, Tuesday, 6 March 2007 21:20 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, w/o Liriano, the Indians are the only ones I have any love for, not that that means anything about the teams' strengths. Just that I'll be rooting for cleveland.

peepee, Thursday, 8 March 2007 02:15 (eighteen years ago)

Tigers, but who knows, really. Four good teams.

Oakland Mike, Friday, 9 March 2007 08:11 (eighteen years ago)

I'm picking the Twins, but I think it comes down to who has the best pitching in the division. The White Sox bullpen looks pretty thinned out from two years ago and who knows if Dye, Konerko and Thome can keep up the slugging. I think one or all could be due for an off season. Cleveland's lineup is impressive, but their pitching hasn't really improved over last year. Even though Detroit is probably a bit better on paper, I will pick Minnesota as they seem to be a pretty consistent club over the past few years.

three months pass...

dokomoy (Los Angeles): WSCR Chicago reported Buehrle has been signed to a 4 year 50 million dollar extension. Thoughts?

Nate Silver: If true, that's an awfully nice move by the White Sox, and Buehrle left a lot of money on the table. And the good thing about that contract is that it's still very tradeable if guys like Gio Gonzalez come up in 2008 and the Sox find themselves with an excess of pitching depth.

Buehrle update: No movement with Sox

a nugget from Jim Baker at BP a week ago:

The White Sox have a team road OBP of .298. No American League team has been below .300 since the turn of the century--not even the 2003 Tigers. They've also got the worst stolen base percentage in the league.

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 17:34 (eighteen years ago)

A ball so small, it is almost nonexistent.

Andy K, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 18:52 (eighteen years ago)

but Kruk sez it's Podsednik's absence!

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 19:11 (eighteen years ago)

Nice predicting job here.

Steve Shasta, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 19:27 (eighteen years ago)

who picked kansas?

Will M., Wednesday, 4 July 2007 14:40 (eighteen years ago)

Cleveland's bullpen has had everything come into line for a bunch of old vets. Borowski, Betancourt, and Fultz have been really good. (Borowski's ERA is a bit deceiving, as he gave up like 10 runs in two early appearances including that walk off grand slam to A-Rod. Since those couple of early debacles he has been pretty good.) That young left hander Rafael Perez is a pretty nasty guy to bring in for a few outs. I think he might be a secret weapon for the Tribe's bullpen once the playoffs come around.

Fausto Carmona has been really crafty and filled in well for the Indians considering Jake Westbrook has been hurt and or terrible this year.

BUMP

Dr Morbius, Friday, 28 September 2007 13:54 (eighteen years ago)

the tigers remind me of last year's white sox, WS team with hellacious offense has excellent season, but misses playoffs cuz they're in a stacked division~~

cankles, Friday, 28 September 2007 14:05 (eighteen years ago)

There are some definite parallels but the '06 Sox had each of their five starters pitch 30-32 games, whereas the '07 Tigers had three with 28 or more, and the remainder of the starts split between nine other pitchers (plus a bullpen with lots of injuries, well beyond Rodney and Zumaya). Also, Jim Thome was a factor all year, while Sheffield was either out of the lineup or a non-factor throughout the second half. (And healthy Sheffield was a big factor.) Ultimately though, for both teams, it came down to poor pitching.

Figured injuries would be an issue with the Tigers since they were not last year. Dug up an old email where I hazarded 86-76.
