Tigers' Jones ejected for throwing at Drew
Todd Jones - R - DET - Mar. 10 - 3:18 pm et

Todd Jones was ejected from Saturday's game in the fifth inning after throwing behind J.D. Drew.
It was apparently the second time in the at-bat that Jones tried to hit Drew. It was in retaliation for Josh Beckett hitting Gary Sheffield in the shoulder and Magglio Ordonez in the helmet with a breaking ball earlier in the game. Manager Jim Leyland also got into the action and benches cleared, though no blows were exchanged. Mar. 10 - 3:18 pm et

Ah, bless you, Josh.

Watch it.

Andy K, Sunday, 11 March 2007 04:20 (eighteen years ago)

Gospel singer Deleon Richards-Sheffield, wife of the Tigers' new designated hitter, performed Saturday night in Tampa.

And Jim Leyland was sitting in the front row.

"I'm telling you, she's unbelievable!" the Detroit manager said Sunday. "That's not something I listen to when I'm driving on the highway, on my iPod, but it was touching. It was moving.

"My friend asked me to come to his wife's (concert), so I went. And I'm glad. ... I really enjoyed it."

Gary Sheffield said he spotted Leyland in the front row and could tell he was enjoying himself. Above all, Sheffield said he appreciated the fact that Leyland took the time to come.

"I've known him for a long time, and he'll do anything for you," Sheffield said. "He's that kind of person."

Andy K, Monday, 12 March 2007 19:39 (eighteen years ago)

Translation: "I know Sheffield's a crybaby pissant, so to shut him up, I went to his wife's garbage concert & pretended I was enjoying myself. Truth is, I'd rather be at home, doubled over with food poisoning from undercooked shellfish than listen to anything that came out of her mouth. That wasn't attached to R. Kelly."

(Note: I am not projecting, not at all.)

David R., Monday, 12 March 2007 20:07 (eighteen years ago)

Who is their DH? I mean 2 1B on an AL team isn't the most troubling thing in the world.

Steve Shasta, Monday, 12 March 2007 22:01 (eighteen years ago)

Sheffield is the DH.

Alex in SF, Monday, 12 March 2007 22:37 (eighteen years ago)

Sheffield was a mess at first.

Plus, Leyland plans on carrying something like 15 pitchers.

Andy K, Monday, 12 March 2007 22:45 (eighteen years ago)

Latest word here is that they're shopping Shelton around the league.
Therefore his value goes up with all those hits versus the Single A pitchers he faces.

Andy K, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 10:01 (eighteen years ago)

There has been a lot of talk about our big new addition (Gary Sheffield) and what he will bring to the Detroit Tigers. I'm very excited that he is a part of our team. This is a player who I used to try and emulate when I was younger and now I get a chance to see everything in person on the same team. It's kind of funny, but when Sheffield made his Major League debut I was 7 years old, and now I'm 25, and he is still playing. He brings championship leadership (1997 World Series), vocal leadership and leadership by example. He is also someone who is a few home runs away from 500 and a few hits away from 3,000, so he will also be a person to go to for information on becoming a better hitter.

Watching him as a leader is going to help me as well too, because I feel that I have to ability to become a great leader. I try my best to lead by example, and also want to be a person who is approachable. Some of the younger outfielders like Brent Clevlen and Cameron Maybin I want to try to help out as best as possible. People ask "Why you would want to help some guys who could end up taking your position?" and I look at it in different ways. If someone ends up taking my position, it's because I'm not doing what is being asked of me to play at the highest level, and I need to improve. I'll be disappointed at myself, not at the players who pass me.

Andy K, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 14:09 (eighteen years ago)

What I was gonna say:

You know, it's actually amazing that Sheffield is closing in on 500 home runs and 3000 hits.

What I'll say after 1 (one) google search:

CG: 2390 is not 'a few hits away' from 3000.

G00blar, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 23:06 (eighteen years ago)

Neifi w/ a slap two-run double.

OH NO.

Andy K, Sunday, 18 March 2007 19:20 (eighteen years ago)

OH NO:

BRADENTON, Fla. -- Chris Shelton believes he can play in the big leagues. He wants to be with the Tigers.

But it never looked good for Shelton to be on the opening day roster, and it doesn't look any better right now. Not only does Neifi Perez make $2.5 million, not only is Jim Leyland comfortable with him, but Perez has played well at several positions and has a .379 spring average.

Forget about the idea that Shelton could take Marcus Thames' place. That was never going to happen. But when Leyland said today that he'd be comfortable right now starting Thames at first base in a regular-season game, you knew all you needed to about the Tigers' need for Shelton right now.

Andy K, Wednesday, 21 March 2007 17:32 (eighteen years ago)

Neifi is on the roster. Shelton is not.

Just for the hell of it, here is a comparison between Casey's Tiger numbers last year and Shelton's '06 numbers minus April (aka the bottomless slump that got him benched and eventually shipped to Toledo):

Casey: 184 ABs, 17 R, 45 Hits, 5 HRs, 30 RBIs, 10 BBs, 21 Ks, .245 AVG, .286 OBP, .346 SLG, .650 OPS

Shelton: 281 ABs, 33 R, 72 Hits, 27 RBIs, 25 BBs, 80 Ks, .256 AVG, .345 OBP, .366 SLG, .711 OPS

I can pull up some defensive numbers. They are not close.

Andy K, Monday, 26 March 2007 14:44 (eighteen years ago)

Last year:
Casey's runs/rbis: AB ratio = 47:184 , or .255
Shelton's 60:281 , or .213

also, didn't Shelton dive begin sometime in mid-May?

Of course, Perez is there because of his ability to play 3b, 2b and short.

I'm ok with the move, as long as I don't replay Neifi's at bats from September in my head. What is Neifi's batting average this spring?

peepee, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 13:54 (eighteen years ago)

Shelton's stat above are minus April

peepee, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 15:53 (eighteen years ago)

"Casey's runs/rbis: AB ratio = 47:184 , or .255
Shelton's 60:281 , or .213"

So we are rewarding Sean based on who was on base before him and who hit behind him now? Or did he use his mayor-ly powers to will runs on the board?

Alex in SF, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 16:01 (eighteen years ago)

If the BP projections for Casey hold up, Shelton should be up by Mother's Day.

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 16:22 (eighteen years ago)

You are giving the Tigers credit for smarts on Casey and Shelton that they have heretofore not exhibited.

Alex in SF, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 17:34 (eighteen years ago)

"Of course, Perez is there because of his ability to play 3b, 2b and short."

Yes, but Ramon Santiago has the same ability, and he was sent down.

Neifi has had a good spring. Santiago did well, too.

Neifi is getting much more money than Santiago.

Has the Neifi Index been updated?

Andy K, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 20:43 (eighteen years ago)

Anyway, Dombrowski has recently said that Shelton is the Tigers' first baseman of the future. Monroe, Thames, and the Mayor each have contracts that expire at the end of the year, so the room will likely be there in some form.

And, obviously, many parts of Casey's body have a high potentiality of crapping out.

Also, this is a case of handedness preference needing to eat a proverbial bag of dicks.

Andy K, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 20:49 (eighteen years ago)

Also, Casey is being rewarded for a good post-season. That's worth something.

Perez hitting .317 with 9 walks (only 3 last year).
Santiago's numbers just a bit less, with a bit more power.
So then it comes down to the contract.

Though really, is anyone really too concerned about who goes north in April?

But is the pitching a given? How much worry is brought on by Verlander's bad spring?

peepee, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 21:40 (eighteen years ago)

"Also, Casey is being rewarded for a good post-season. That's worth something."

1) It wasn't that good a post-season.

2) It's not worth sitting a guy who's going to play a lot better the other six months of the year.

Alex in SF, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 21:45 (eighteen years ago)

Casey batted .432 in the post season, did he not?
Pritttay good.

peepee, Tuesday, 27 March 2007 22:03 (eighteen years ago)

Casey was something like half the team's offense in the WS. That's not saying much, but the numbers were excellent regardless of context. Hitting around .200 and killing countless rallies with infield pop-ups and DPs during September is another matter. (The same goes for grounding out to left field.)

Apparently there is no worry with Verlander, despite an eight-point-something ERA, because he feels he is at full power.

Neifi dropped some weight and did a lot of running during the off-season. Good for him. (No, really.)

Andy K, Wednesday, 28 March 2007 02:17 (eighteen years ago)

Warning: pent-up cusswords to follow.

Any pea-brained jackass with a pussy willow can hit .300 for a week or two weeks or (in Neifi's case) a month. That one shining moment, in the face of mounting evidence that contradicts what was seen in that one moment, doesn't mean you give the flash-in-the-pan dipshit a starting job.

(Please note that this argument could be used in support of Shelton, or in support of Casey. But Casey's dog don't hunt, sniff its ass, or shit where it's told anymore, so he can mayor himself back to church.)

David R., Wednesday, 28 March 2007 05:04 (eighteen years ago)

No games won or lost by more than two runs thus far. Solid: Granderson, Pudge (offense only), Jones, starting pitchers, infield defense (including several Casey scoops). OK/iffy/shit: Almost everyone/everything else (especially Inge's bat and Maggs' glove/knee/hair). B-

Andy K, Tuesday, 10 April 2007 22:42 (eighteen years ago)

I'm "ok" with the Tigers being 3 and 3 while playing very, er, uninspired baseball. I'm also ok with Neifi playing in Inge's stead tonight. Though, I'm fairly confident about Inge's upcoming .232/72rbi/23hr season.

Rogers throws sim game

Kenny Rogers just finished his three-inning, 52-pitch simulated game Friday afternoon. He didn't look particularly happy at times, and he had a handful of breaking balls in the dirt, but he wasn't hit all that hard. The fact that the sound system at McAfee Coliseum was blaring music the whole time probably didn't make him all that happy. You wouldn't be, either, if your shot to get back into the rotation hinged on how you pitched to Abba's Dancing Queen or a remake of Instant Karma.

We'll see what the verdict is from the manager later today. At the moment, he's hitting BP off of Van Slyke.

Does keeping everyone in the lineup comfortable in their wittle slot mean so much that it's OK to throw away ABs between Polanco & Ordonez every stupid game?

David R., Wednesday, 5 September 2007 01:43 (eighteen years ago)

Going into the game, Infante was something like 15 for 35 off Garland. It made more sense than hitting Timo there, which OBVIOUSLY is not saying much.

It's a crazy idea possibly but Ordonez and Guillen MIGHT be able to handle hitting third and fourth (OOH ADJUSTMENTS I DUNNO IT HAS BEEN ALMOST A FULL CALENDAR YEAR SINCE THEY HAVE DONE THAT) behind Granderson-Polanco, rather than Granderson-Polanco-someone mediocre POSSIBLY FEELING THE PRESSURE TO DO GARY SHEFFIELD'S JOB. (Case in point: Thames, who was ineffective as the number three hitter, hit fifth on Sunday and went 3-for-4 with two doubles.)

OR it might be wise sometime to hit Raburn leadoff and slot XBH specialist Granderson third. You'd think Raburn's ability to draw walks as a pinch hitter in two consecutive games might send off some kind of signal to Leyland, but no.

Andy K, Wednesday, 5 September 2007 02:32 (eighteen years ago)

Media watchdog Todd Jones:

This is my one attempt to help you through the Detroit media. All these people who sit there and cast opinions and try to shape your sports mind in our fair city. Most times, you can't make hide nor hair of who knows what, who knows who, who has got a hot tip, or who is just filling space.

As fans, you are at a tremendous disadvantage. You don't have a choice. You want to know what is going on with the Pistons, Lions, Red Wings and Tigers. So who do we look to? We look to our papers.

The Free Press and the Detroit News are in the city. It's important to have two papers in one city as kind of a check-and-balance system. Each paper is just as good as the other, so it's a personal choice.

Clearly, the main media guy in the city is Mitch Albom. Hey, you got to respect him. Like him or not, he has Oprah on speed dial, and you know she picks up, so you can't mess with him. Mitch is a columnist; he's paid to form opinions. Other columnists are Bob Wojnowski (News), Drew Sharp (Free Press), Terry Foster (News), Pat Caputo (Oakland Press), Rob Parker (News) and Michael Rosenberg (Free Press). These guys chime in on social commentary, but they don't get specific in one sport. They give you the broad overview as to what's going in Detroit sports, but they are paid to pull on our emotional strings and get us thinking. So as a rule of thumb, you take what they have to say with a grain of salt.

You get the baseball story from the beat writers, starting off with the guy I respect the most, the Free Press' John Lowe. The beat writers are Tom Gage and Lynn Henning (News), Danny Knobler (Booth Newspapers), Jim Hawkins (Oakland Press) and Jon Paul Morosi (Free Press). There are more, but these guys are the main ones. All of these guys are members of the BBWAA (Baseball Writers' Association of America). Reporters have to show up for at least 81 games to be considered a baseball guy.

The beat writer's job is just to report on the game. They sometimes get a bad rap as having to be homers because they have to be with the team on most days, and they won't write some controversial stuff just to stir the pot because it's not their job. And if they ever want players to talk to them and help them do their job, they sometimes turn their heads and don't print controversial stuff although they see it all because they are around the team all the time.

The one section of people who you need to stay away from, in my opinion, is the talk-show guys. The radio talk-show guys have ruined the credibility of the other guys in the media. They, for the most part, are the troublemakers in town. They whip all the fans into a frenzy by design every day. These guys, who wore blue socks in gym class, criticize the players and try to get fans to take the bait. But remember, they have a job to do; they have to fill four or five hours a day. How do you do that?

By saying that Todd Jones sucks and Joel Zumaya should be closing. Or whatever the topic of the day is. Case in point is the Fire Matt Millen crusade these dum-dums continue to pursue.

Here's a tip: If the Lions fired Matt Millen, it would validate the guys who want him fired, so in a reverse way, they are creating job security. A good rule of thumb is listen to them as entertainment, but they would not know baseball if they worked at Cooperstown as a guide.

Always remember, it's easier to sit back on a Monday and say what we or the Lions or the Pistons did wrong than to have to make the decision at the moment of the contest. That way, these guys who wore blue socks in gym class are never wrong and can look like geniuses. Meanwhile, we're on the field making tough decisions based on the info we have at the time, and we live with it.

The plan of attack for fans is to read the baseball men. Start with your summary of the game from the beat writers. Read all articles from the game and take with a grain of salt what the columnists have to say. Or better yet, watch the game and form your own opinions.

Start with USA Today. There is no hometown emotional influence, just the facts. Then get XM Radio and turn the shock jocks off; make your life less stressful. Remember, they speak after the fact. I've never been wrong when I look back.

The media are a necessary evil of life. They judge and form opinions, and sometimes I just wish they would not forget that fact. They have a platform, and the way some of these guys choose to use it just too bad.

That gave him a classic 5-0-5-0 box-score line that hadn't happened in six years.”

``I know they'll bring in a good (shortstop),'' Guillen said. ``I know it's going to be a good one. I don't know who it's going to be, but I know it's going to be a good one.''

IE not Jack Wilson.

So who wants Casey, seismic leg lifts, tireless jaws and all?

Andy K, Sunday, 30 September 2007 17:47 (eighteen years ago)

Polanco gets 200th hit, plays full errorless season; Granderson ends with .300 avg; Guillen knocks in 100th (plus) run; Rabelo gets first HR; Ordonez gets batting title. Not a bad final game.

Andy K, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 20:48 (eighteen years ago)

Are you being sarcastic? I can't tell. I think it is pretty good move.

Alex in SF, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 21:12 (eighteen years ago)

CHICAGO -- Sean Casey arrived at U.S. Cellular Field on Sunday morning to find an unexpected treasure waiting for him.

White Sox slugger Jim Thome, who mentored Casey as a young player with the Cleveland Indians, had sent an autographed photo of his 500th home run to the visiting clubhouse.

The inscription: "To Sean: No one will ever be like you. What an example you have sent to the game! Jim Thome."
