I voted Padres. This division is not as weak as the NL Central (home to World Series Champs).

Steve Shasta, Thursday, 8 March 2007 22:00 (eighteen years ago)

i voted for the rockies to be contrarian

I voted for the Dodgers for the same reason I always do - so I can be pleasantly surprised if the Padres win!

Oakland Mike, Friday, 9 March 2007 08:07 (eighteen years ago)

again it's hard to believe anyone will win. but even moreso the Central.

D-Backs (I predict Johnson will have a huge year.)

Alex in SF, Friday, 9 March 2007 16:59 (eighteen years ago)

Dodgers done made dern good pitching staff.

Central haters - I will be thinking of you as we raise our world series banner, dish out the rings, etc. Oh wait, no I won't =)

I think the D-Backs have the makings of a very solid starting staff. Doug Davis and Livan Hernandez eat up bunches of innings, while neither is great, they can keep a team in a game, which is fine for a #3 and #4. If The Unit can get back some of his former form and Brandon Webb can continue to be good, I think paired up with Hernandez and Davis, that is a pretty good staff for the NL West.

SD's lineup looks pretty weak, but they should get decent pitching in that part. They have won the division two years straight, so who knows.

Colorado has been stockpiling some good talent, even pitchers this time. I would not be suprised if they hang around even more in the mix than last year.

SF could be good, but their bullpen still looks pretty shabby.

LA doesn't look any better to me than they did this time last year, but hey they made the playoffs, so go figure.

I'll take the D-Backs but it will probably end up being SF or LA.

Didn't the humidifier get banned? I can't believe that won't kill Colorado's chances.

xpost I thought the opposite happened: everyone now uses the humidifier.

Yep, from Gary Huckaby's Hope and Faith piece on the Giants:
There’s a major item that’s kind of unspoken this year, and it’s possible that this item could really help some teams more than others. I’m talking about the policy that baseballs at all parks will be stored in humidors this year. Based on the “smoothing” effect that the humidor has had in Colorado, it’s going to be the policy that game-used balls will be stored at 70 degrees and 50 percent humidity this season. As anyone who’s played a lot of baseball, softball, or golf can tell you (or anyone who’s studied materials science), there’s a lot of variance from game ball to game ball. You can have diameter changes, elasticity changes, color changes, seam changes, all of which can dramatically affect the flight of the ball. I don’t know how that’s going to affect the game at any given park, or during any given at-bat. But it’s entirely possible that there will be a systematic advantage or disadvantage bestowed on one team, player, type of pitcher, or what have you.

Was it last year's 5.00 ERA or his off-season back surgery that leads you to this BOLD prediction?

Steve Shasta, Sunday, 11 March 2007 21:06 (eighteen years ago)

Maybe he means at the plate.

The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Sunday, 11 March 2007 23:17 (eighteen years ago)

"xpost I thought the opposite happened: everyone now uses the humidifier."

Okay, yes, but the difference is that the humidifier level is regulated so the Rockies can't adjust theirs to make life easier for pitchers at Coors.

Dr Morbius, Friday, 28 September 2007 14:23 (eighteen years ago)

John (AZ): It is possiable that the 3 best records come out of the NL West, Has that ever happened before?

Jayson Stark: (1:08 PM ET ) I checked into that last night. In the wild-card era, we've never had one division produce the three best records in one league. In other words, the team with the third-best winning pct. has never missed the playoffs. But that could still happen. Unbelievable.

Dr Morbius, Friday, 28 September 2007 17:19 (eighteen years ago)

I'm very happy that the Diamondbacks are playing the Rockies this weekend, because otherwise neither of them would ever lose.
