two months pass...
Complementing our two player panels featuring former Browns and former
Cardinals, the host committee has put together six other presentations
designed to whet your baseball appetites.
On Friday morning, we will here from player agent MATT SOSNICK. He is
the subject of sportwriter Jerry Crasnick's recent book, "Licensed to
Deal," and his current clients include Marlins pitcher Dontrelle Willis.
Matt is one of the new breed of agents, and he is enthusiastic about
sharing details of his work with us.
Also on Friday, we will enjoy a return visit from DR. MIKE MARSHALL ,
former NL Cy Young Award winner. Mike spoke to the Seattle convention
last year, but scheduling difficulties kept the crowd to a minimum. He
has graciously accepted our invitation to come to St. Louis to explain
his theories on the science of pitching.
Friday's third panel is called "Our Mothers' Game (and Ours): Tales from
the Women's Side of Baseball. Participants will include DOROTHY SEYMOUR
MILLS, author of "A Woman's Work"; JUDITH TESTA, author of "Sal Maglie:
Baseball's Demon Barber"; CECILIA TAN, author and editor of several
baseball books; ERMAN BERGMANN, a pitcher in the AAGPBL; SARA
BLASINGAME, widow of former major leaguer Don Blasingame; and MELODY
YOUNT, assistant director of media relations for the Cardinals. JEAN
ARDELL will moderate.
On Saturday, we have three other panels scheduled. The first will be our
Umpires Panel, moderated by former SABR president and founding chair of
our Umpires and Rules Committee, LARRY GERLACH. On the panel will be
retired MLB umpire DAVE PHILLIPS plus a current MLB umpire and (we hope)
umpire supervisor RICH RIEKER. The day portion of the Cardinals-Brewers
day/night doubleheader may cause this panel to be rescheduled.
Second on Saturday will be a panel on independent baseball featuring
BILL LEE, commissioner of the Frontier League. Lee's league has two
teams in the greater St. Louis area, the River City Rascals, once
managed by Jack Clark, and the Gateway Grizzlies, once managed by Danny
Cox. Neither team will be at home during the convention, but
Commissioner Lee promises a dynamic presentation on the history and
opportunity of independent ball.
Finally on Saturday, we will have a presentation by JIM CHIBNALL of HOK
Sports, the company that designed the new Busch Stadium and many other
of the new ballparks. Since we will going to the ballpark on Friday
night, Jim will graciously take our questions about the process by which
the new Busch came to be.

three weeks pass...
Before the team semi-finals on Saturday will be a special treat. Actor Ben Jones (Cooter from the Dukes of Hazzard) will be performing his one-man play, Ol’ Diz, starting at 7pm on Saturday evening. He has performed the play numerous times, including at the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown.

Actually, Clark didn't show, but Al Hrabosky (now cleanshaven) did.
Saw Cards get stomped at New Busch (another HOK mallpark, ho hum) last night by Milw, w/ apocalyptic thunderstorm in third inning.
Ex-AL ump Bill Haller oldskool but funny this morning. On Earl Weaver: "When the bastard dies they'll hafta hire pallbearers."
