So Saturday is my fantasy baseball draft, and I need some help. I have the fourth overall pick in the draft, and the following players are protected (my team = the Zambonies):

Phil Zone: Boone, Nomar, Clemens, Smoltz and Ichiro (ML: Fielder, Ford)

Narragansett: Pedro, Wood, Soriano, Chipper, Sweeney (ML: Olivo, Berroa, Nix)

Ron Jeremy: Bonds, Ramirez, Johnson, Schmidt, Kent (ML: Day, Crosby, Miles)

Row: Colon, Piniero, Chavez, Jones, Sheffield (ML: Baldelli, Lee, Seo)

Joe Morgan: Ordonez, Giambi, Jeter, Mussina, Wolf (ML: Miller, Willis, Cabrera)

80's: Arod, Beltran, Schilling, Vazquez, Gagne (ML: Myers, Jackson, Claussen)

Springfield: Huff, Tejada, Posada, Foulke, Mulder (ML: Thurston, Larson, Guthrie)

Brooklyn Bialys: Pujols, Helton, Halladay, Wells, Santana (ML: Mauer, Gerut, Wainwright)

Flatbush Fantasy: Vlad, Rolen, Sexon, Sosa, Oswalt (ML: Burroughs, Foppert, Floyd)

Shaolin: Prior, Delgado, Piazza, Rivera, Pierre (ML: Phillips, Perez, Webb)

LHPB: Hudson, Anderson, Millwood, Castillo, Lowe (ML: Martinez, Reyes, Hafner)

Zambonies: Zito, Beckett, Abreu, Giles, Berkman (ML: Teixera, Harden, R Soriano)

I'm expecting the first three picks to go Thome, Renteria, and Wagner. For my pick, I'm leaning heavily toward taking Hank Blaylock. Corner infielders are hard to come by, and considering position scarcity and potential he seems the best pick. I would consider going SS or 2B, but I'm not seeing anyone who warrants that high a pick. Nor do I see any pitchers that would fit well there either. Thoughts?

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Monday, 22 March 2004 18:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Blalock (is that how you spell it?) would be a solid pick - I'd do some righteous spreadsheeting right now, except I'm @ work & actually have work to do (right after this) - but perhaps you could get away w/ delaying on filling your 3B position for a couple of rounds & sneak a pick, like that Houston 3B that was totally STIFFED by Jimy Williams last year & yet still managed to do well (& should have 3B locked up now that Geoff Blum is gonzo) - Morgan Ensberg! - or Bill Mueller (ha) while stacking your rotation or getting a high-endish catcher / above average middle infielder...?

But are any of the available pitchers / glovemen going to do better than a more experienced Blalock? Soriano is bullpen bound, right? & is Harden going to start the year in the A's rotation?

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 22 March 2004 20:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I had Ensberg last year. I'm not totally sold on him, nor do I think the 'Stros lineup will be all that and a bag of dicks. Soriano is bullpen bound at the beginning of the year, but they wanna work him into the rotation. Harden will be the number five starter, but I'm gonna give him some time before throwing him into the lineup. Best available pitchers as far as I can tell: Carlos Zambrano and (maybe) Loiza. I'm hoping to nab Loiza in the fourth or fifth round (maybe everyone else'll think he's a fluke? i do, but i'd take a chance on him that late). I also want Gil Meche, for sure, and Ben Sheets. Both both can be had in the mid-rounds. There really just isn't much pitching out there, as far as I can tell.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Monday, 22 March 2004 20:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Now if Thome or Renteria fall to me (they won't), I'd absolutely take them. Wagner not so much. I'd much rather cobble together a couple of closers late.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Monday, 22 March 2004 20:16 (twenty-two years ago)

is gygax gonna recommend i take aurilia and hillenbrand w/ my top two picks? did i just give away his ILB strategy?

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Monday, 22 March 2004 20:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Closers r crap. I was doing all right in another league (head 2 head) with Rocky Biddle as my closer, and he had no right getting saves the way he pitched.

I think Meche would be a better pick than Loaiza (but that's because I'm a gloomy gus when it comes to Loaiza's type of overachieving). However, the Mariners' line-up looks to be 1/10th as potent as it once was (oooh Raul Ibanez and Rich Aurilia), so wins could possibly be scarce (sic?) for the Mojo Dojos. And they really shouldn't even toy w/ Soriano in the bullpen - just shove him in the rotation and reap the fruits of his labor (barring some Bob Melvin bullpen mismanagement, of course). A lower-tier Toronto or Anaheim pitcher might be a sneaky way to bolster your staff.

And isn't Thome out for over a month?

I think Gygax is gonna hop on the Bruce Chen Boogie Board this year. I think EVERYONE should hop on the Bruce Chen Boogie Board this year. Surf's up north of the border, brah.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 22 March 2004 20:51 (twenty-two years ago)

David, you've hit on something. WHO THE FUCK COULD BE MORE "DUE" THAN BRUCE FUCKING CHEN?!??!?!?

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Monday, 22 March 2004 21:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Narragansett

Surely this is Ned Incognito.

O.Leee.B. (Leee), Monday, 22 March 2004 23:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Does anyone here have access to Baseball Prospectus' members-only content? I would love (LOVE!) a list of the 50 best pitchers in respect to fewest home runs allowed and most strikeouts. (ESPN used to have this info, but it seems as if they took it down, bastards)

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Found some of these stats on MLB.com, and aside from the big-name pitchers already protected (primarily Pedro and Beckett), the top four starting pitchers in respect to SOs and HRs are (in order):

Carlos Zambrano
Esteban Loiza
Miguel Batista
Kelvim Escobar

Kinda shocking!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 17:28 (twenty-two years ago)

kevin brown and brandon webb look decent based on my (admittedly faulty and perhaps fundamentally flawed) database.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 17:34 (twenty-two years ago)

no way i take kevin brown. i've been burned by him so many times.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 17:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Shit, if Webb's available, I'd take him in a heartbeat, but is 'Zona actually going to score any runs? Word has it they're old or something.

Zambrano would be a good bet, too, though I don't know if the Cubs bullpen will help you get the wins you deserve. And I loathe (LOATHE) the way Dusty (man)handles pitchers.

I was surprised at how well Batista did last year, but he strikes me as a Suppan-like fluke, & my rawhide intuition (wooooEEEEEooooo) tells me he'll suck ass like Lidle did last year (even if they're two totally different types of pitchers). At least he'll get run support, though.

Escobar, I would avoid like a Fenway Frank, given his inconsistencies and the difference between Toronto & Anaheim's lineup. Playing Erstad & Eckstein & Jose Guillen (non-Red version) & The Squatting Molina Brothers = lots of 3-2 heartbreak.

And, man, taking DL Brown after he actually pitched a whole year injury free, pitching for a team with possibly the worst infield defense this side of a Fat Camp Li'l League team, is digging your own grave and asking to be buried alive.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 18:39 (twenty-two years ago)

(meche gives up a shitload of HRs, by the way)

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 19:08 (twenty-two years ago)

YANC3Y GET KAZ MATSUI!

my first round pick will be aurilia's successor.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 19:10 (twenty-two years ago)

My ideal (i.e. realistic) infield post-draft:

C: Kielty
1B: Teixera
2B: Loretta
SS: Cabrera or Cintron
3B: Blalock
Corner Infielder: Hillenbrand/Nevin

My outfield is set.

Pitching wise, I'd love to nab:
Matt Morris
Esteban Loaiza
Jamie Moyer
Carlos Zambrano
Woody Williams
Miguel Batista

Plus whatever good closers fall my way. I think this could be a solid squad...

(doesn't anyone else have fantasy questions to ask??? i don't wanna monopolize this thread)

And gygax, why so hot on Matsui?

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 19:16 (twenty-two years ago)

GO NEIFI GO!

xpost

O.Leee.B. (Leee), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 19:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Should we start a separate, ongoing thread dedicated to reporting injuries?

O.Leee.B. (Leee), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 19:18 (twenty-two years ago)

not a bad idear

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 19:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Found some of these stats on MLB.com, and aside from the big-name pitchers already protected (primarily Pedro and Beckett), the top four starting pitchers in respect to SOs and HRs are (in order):

Carlos Zambrano

well hello there!

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 20:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Kielty? As in Bobby? He's an OF, isn't he? Or is there another Kielty out there? OR do you mean Mauer (tho Kielty & Mauer aren't on the same team any more)?

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 23 March 2004 20:49 (twenty-two years ago)

so are park effects accounted for in fantasy baseball? i ask because yanc3yb0y has a couple rangers who have been seriously helped by their home park (geez why don't you pick up michael young while you're at it?) and it's obviously unfair if a level playing field is assumed. (i have no idea how fantasy baseball works but i assume you simply base your team's results on what the individual players accomplished in reality, correct?)

and yeah zambrano and webb (and brown but he's too old and david is so right about the D) have that super rare combination of wicked groundball+strikeout ability that all but guarantees a low era.

for any ppl here who like staring at numbers:

webb's GB/FB ratio and K/9 last year:
3.44 (!!)
8.57 (!!!)

The G/F ratio compares to derek lowe and the k-rate to roger clemens. the only comp in all of baseball is k. brown at his best. (does anyone know what the accepted thought is on webb's chances of keeping this up?)

and the ranger infield trio road OPS:

blalock: .736
teixeira: .646
young: .658

sorry if this seems excessive, i used to be able to rub the baseball juices out by posting to nyyfans but i got banned for telling curt schilling to go suck a fat one!

John (jdahlem), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 00:14 (twenty-two years ago)

haha, John, how about that former Ranger who just got traded to NYY?

does anyone know what the accepted thought is on webb's chances of keeping this up?

doesn't it seem rare that rookie pitchers develop beyond outstanding first years (most recently: hello damian moss!)?

so yeah, incidentally, Webb got rocked today by the chisox. 6 Runs (5 earned) on 9 hits across 4 innings. 5K/2BB/1HBP. But it was his only loss of the spring to date.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 00:32 (twenty-two years ago)

so i picked up the baseball prospectus 2004 guide tonight. HOLY SHIT THIS IS AMAZING!!! i'm gonna read through the whole fucking thing this evening. but yeah, john, i am worried about the possibility of having both ranger corner infielders, especially considering the h/a disparity of texas hitters. oddly, the baseball prospectus projections name aramis ramirez as their best 3B breakout candidate (over ensberg and blalock).

and raposa, no not kielty. who am i thinking of? minnesota OF/C who qualifies at both positions... argh. i'm drawing blanks.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 00:47 (twenty-two years ago)

oh fuck i forgot all about the prospectus, but i've got a birthday coming up. i've heard they're great and i can't wait to get my hands on one.

both teixeira and blalock were considered the real deal so i'd have to guess that some of that disparity is fluke, but no one has answered my initial question!

yanc3y i have no idea who the mystery minnesota man is, maybe matt lecroy? http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/teams/min/roster he apparently served as DH/back up C/1B last year.

John (jdahlem), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 01:14 (twenty-two years ago)

John is correct - Matthew Leeeeeeeeeecroy is the tub o' fun you're thinking of, Yanc3. He was pretty good in limited time, he was (mostly as the DH, damn it all - if ONLY he caught more last year so's I could've used him in my non-ILX league).

The Prospectus IS great - I haven't bought a copy in 2 years, but it's a great tool, and a fantastic read. And the website (dot com the name) is swank, too. Scoot on over today to get a free helping of the splendiferous Transaction Analysis column.

Shit, you know, all this talk about the Rangers home park advantage, makes me think that Soriano guy might be a good fantasy guy to pick up as a middle infielder. What's his defense like?

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 01:55 (twenty-two years ago)

stone hands (errrrors), good athleticism (=rrrrange), good arm, can be awkward turning the double play (can be awkward doing everything), average overall. i only get to see about a dozen yankees games a year but no worries because my take has been PROVEN BY SCIENCE (http://www.baseballstuff.com/tangotiger/UZR0003.html, http://theraindrops.weblogs.us/archives/015441.html).

oh and david check out his road numbers, yankee stadium was killing him and he has the potential to EXPLODE next year (without improving a bit, mind!). of course, the opposite is also true and always has been, and there's better pitching in the west, which he struggles against.

John (jdahlem), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 02:09 (twenty-two years ago)

just for shits and giggles:

A-Rod Home / Road splits for 2001-3 (The Ballpark = Home)

BA: .333 / .278 [-.055]
OBP: .416 / .375 [-.041]
SLG: .666 / .564 [-.102] watch his career HR projections drop!

A-Rod's stats in the bronx 2001-3 (sample size 54 ABs):

BA: .241
OBP: .339
SLG: .630

while his slugging is consistent, those are fairly significant drop-offs in BA/OBP.

i have a nice wager with a friend that A-Rod will not bat over .300 this year.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 02:15 (twenty-two years ago)

i would totally take your side on that, but i'd also totally take a .900+ OPS from my shortstop...erhm...but still..

i genuinely do not believe the yankees with enrique/jeter/a-rod (and this arrangement honestly makes me want to puke when the yankees could probably gain 5 wins by simply picking up a stockpile 2B and switching a-rod and jeter) are more than a win better than the yankees with soriano/jeter/boone.

John (jdahlem), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 02:24 (twenty-two years ago)

one thing that skews a-rod's production in the bronx is that he was always batting against (usually) better than average pitchers that have been a staple of the yanquis of late.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 13:56 (twenty-two years ago)

But isn't most of Da Rod's power to left & right center? Especially right center? Given the vast expanse of the Stadium's center field area, I'd imagine pitchers just threw fly-ball slop up there when he came up w/ bases empty and let him swing away. (Maybe?) That might be the ONE detrimental factor contributing to his "decline" this year (which I don't think will be THAT precipitous).

Being an OBP fascist, I'd rather see Soriano decline this year and continue on his Juan Samuel Fast Track to One-Linerville, which COULD happen if folks REALIZED that YOU DON'T HAVE TO THROW THE GUY A STRIKE because HE WILL GET HIMSELF OUT. (Note: if Soriano himself learns to lay off bad pitches, this will not be true.)

Enrique's a millstone. He could hit against Pedro every damn game and STILL be a millstone (as long as the bases aren't loaded). I'm sure there's some deal in the works for Jose Vidro. Maybe they'll give Minaya a lifetime pass to the Stadium Club or whatever the fuck dive The House That Zimmer Shits On sets aside for their high-priced clientele. And maybe Jetes will hook him up w/ Mariah's cell #.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 18:04 (twenty-two years ago)

argh. i have no idea what to do. after getting the prospectus book and mapping out who i want, 3B suddenly seems very deep and the difference between a blalock and, say, a ramirez or koskie (both available much later) seems paltry. so now i'm considering SS and taking either cabrera or matsui. dumb?

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 26 March 2004 15:46 (twenty-two years ago)

how many times has matsui struck out? he has more k's than hits, doesn't he?

otto midnight (otto midnight), Friday, 26 March 2004 15:54 (twenty-two years ago)

The next sports analyst / bobblehead that cottons to equating Spring Training success / failure with how the season will go is going to get a flaming bag of fun on their doorstep. (Note: I have already delivered a bag of fun to myself - the shoes are drying on the front porch as I type.)

Yanc3, I think there's (potentially) a HUGE world of difference between Blalock & other 3B. Besides, haven't both Aramis & Koskie spent lots o' time on the DL recently?

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 26 March 2004 17:12 (twenty-two years ago)

i think it's a legitimate question to wonder how productive matsui will be early in the sesaon. he's struck out a ton (14 times in 50 at bats) and has said that he's having trouble with the movement on fastballs and cutters. he has 4 more strike outs than hits and has stuck out over 110 times the last two years with the seibu lions. and on top of that the mets want him to be selective and hit the ball on the ground while he keeps popping up. not sure if you'd want to use an early pick in the draft for that.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Friday, 26 March 2004 17:30 (twenty-two years ago)

A's have dominated the last 3 spring traingings (including this year). 02 and 03 were pretty slow going.

on the other hand, the giants have had abyssmal spring training records for the past 3 seasons (i'm pretty sure they've been in last place each time)... they've done all right the past few years.

i forget who said it (some manager): "there's a reason these games don't count". (rough paraphrase)

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 26 March 2004 17:32 (twenty-two years ago)

matsui is too much of a risk, i agree. cabrera just had a career year.
the difference between blalock and koskie (and ramirez, i guess) might be small (blalock eqa last year: .285, koskie: .299), but then, blalock is only 23, so he's much less of a risk in pretty much every way (and i STILL don't know if park effects are taken into account - if not, go blalock!). defensively, koskie has a clear edge, but i don't know how much that matters, and age becomes a factor again there too.

John (jdahlem), Friday, 26 March 2004 18:59 (twenty-two years ago)

park effects are not taken into account. just raw numbers. and no, defense doesn't matter either. my goal for the first three rounds: get a 3B, SS, and SP. just trying to figure out the right order to do it...

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 26 March 2004 19:24 (twenty-two years ago)

MARGINAL UTILITY

yanc3y's econ. prof. (gygax!), Friday, 26 March 2004 19:32 (twenty-two years ago)

i had blalock last year but we had 2 fielding categories, fielding % and errors. he was a wash. he go 1/3 with a 2b and 2 rbi but boot a grounder and compound it with a throwing error. frustrating.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Friday, 26 March 2004 19:33 (twenty-two years ago)

yance i really can't be of any more "help" because i just don't know enough about the process, but i'd defintely say that among the names listed so far (kaz, cabrera, koskie, ramirez, blalock), on a purely player vs. player basis hank is the clear choice. but i see what you're saying about the diff. between 3Bs not being enough to warrant potentially losing out on a serviceable shortstop...i dunno. i can tell you that a couple (possible) sleepers are kim & arroyo over in boston - but kim's got that arm injury now and arroyo's probably not good enough to crack the smaller fantasy baseball talent pool.

John (jdahlem), Friday, 26 March 2004 20:30 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, based on all your help (i mean it!) i'm gonna go hank, then either SS or SP with my second pick, depending on who's available (hopefully either Cabrera or Furcal (SS) or Zambrano or Morris (SP).

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 26 March 2004 20:33 (twenty-two years ago)

sounds like a plan. one thing though, i was looking over the above list and - no marcus giles!?

John (jdahlem), Friday, 26 March 2004 20:47 (twenty-two years ago)

marcus giles is unprotected, yes. he's on my list (if none of those four above were available in round two and he was, i'd take him).

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 26 March 2004 20:49 (twenty-two years ago)

my draft is 25 minutes away! hot!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Saturday, 27 March 2004 19:35 (twenty-two years ago)

my first three picks: blalock, kaz matsui, and loaiza. some risks, but some good opportunities for huge payoffs.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Monday, 29 March 2004 15:22 (twenty-two years ago)

So that's my team. I was drafting from NYC (everyone else was in Boston) via IM, but halfway through the draft my computer died, so the last nine rounds were spent with me throwing names out over the phone until someone was available. I couldn't even remember who was on my team. Suck City. I still think it went fairly well though.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Monday, 29 March 2004 15:23 (twenty-two years ago)

i had lohse and blalok last year, both were infuratingly inconsistant.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Monday, 29 March 2004 15:36 (twenty-two years ago)

great outfield and fairly solid pitching... how deep is the league?

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 29 March 2004 16:47 (twenty-two years ago)

okay, i just proposed trading Hee Seop Choi and Tony Womack for Derrek Lee.

am i nuts?

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 3 May 2004 19:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I always get confoosed - are you trading for Lee or for Choi?

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 3 May 2004 19:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm trading Choi/Womack to GET Lee.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 3 May 2004 19:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, that seems like a fair swap. I think Womack is nothing more than dull meat, even if he's doing well right now, so getting value for his soon-to-be-dead ass would be hott. The fact that Hee Sop's playing time is semi-sporadic (only 4-5 starts per week) (BASTARDS) makes Lee's consistency (and proven goodness) a welcome thing, too. Has Lee been stealing bases any this year?

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 3 May 2004 19:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Not yet, but his splits indicate that's about normal.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 3 May 2004 19:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd dood it. You're not (too) nuts (yet).

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Monday, 3 May 2004 20:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Only good when the expert does it. Regular choads doing it is bad in a non-good way. Unless it's you, Yanc3. ;)

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 3 May 2004 22:47 (twenty-one years ago)

i like the sound roid rage makes.

dyson (dyson), Monday, 3 May 2004 22:50 (twenty-one years ago)

three months pass...
i have zito, and he has jacked me around all season. i get an offer: noah lowry for zito, do i take it? i mean, someone actually WANTS zito. he looks like crap. lowry is due for a meltdown, but what if i'm wrong. will zito turn it around for the last 6 weeks of the season? he's supposedly a second half pitcher but he ain't done shat since the all-star break.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 14:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Zito hasn't pitched bad two out of his last three starts. He didn't do very well against the Yanks, but his two starts before that were pretty good.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 14:32 (twenty-one years ago)

earlnash, you need to check zito's game log. his last several starts have been marginal at best (getting mucho win support if anything).

so, after the game tonight i'm wondering if there are any updated opinions?

zito pitched 7 innings to detroit tonight, giving up 3 runs (1 on a HR).
6 hits, 1 walk, 1 hbp = 1.00 whip
5 Ks, 1 walk = 5.00 K/BB

I mean, this is Detroit. I had higher expectations.

My finger is definitely on the trigger, just wondering if there are any other opinions.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 02:59 (twenty-one years ago)

For the first time in five years, I'm in first place this late with an eight-point lead. It's a money league, so I'm starting to get antsy. My hitting is solider, but my pitching needs help

Active hitters:
C - Charles Johnson, Brian Schneider
1B - Pujols
2B - Luis Castillo
3B - Miguel Cabrera
SS - Rafael Furcal
CI - Edgardo Alfonzo
MI - Chone Figgins
OF - Brian Giles, Bobby Abreu, Milton Bradley, Geoff Jenkins, JD Drew
UT - Hafner
Reserved and healthy:
Luis Rivas, Jimmy Rollins, Raul Ibanez, Bobby Kielty

The middle is a logjam, and I've been betting wrong on who's going to be hot when I make a switch, hopefully Giles picks it up

My starting pitching is weak (third from last in 2xWins minus losses, second in ERA & WHIP and middle-top in Ks and Svs), but I've made my innings so I might be able to coast.

Active pitchers:
Javier Vazquez
Jason Isringhausen
Livan Hernandez
Matt Clement
Odalis Perez
Matt Herges
Kyle Farnsworth
Smoltz
AJ Burnett
Victor Santos

Reserved
Vicente Padilla
Chris Reitsma
Kirk Rueter
Shigetoshi
Ryan Franklin
and eventually Halladay (my second effin' pick of the draft)

I'm taking out Santos for Padilla and Farnsworth for Reitsma tonight

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Monday, 16 August 2004 23:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Get rid of Herges, he has zero fantasy value. Pick up Dustin Hermanson if he's available for Saves. If not, try Mike Gonzalez from the Pirates.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 16 August 2004 23:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Free agent possibilities:
Juan Rincon
Josh Towers
Erik Bedard
Chad Durbin
Brett Tomko
Antonio Alfonseca

I think I'm going to waive Rafael Soriano for Durbin or Towers tonight, but are any of the others worth taking a chance on?

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 00:02 (twenty-one years ago)

ooh, thanks, I hadn't noticed Herges lost his job, Hermanson's available.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 00:03 (twenty-one years ago)

is rafael soriano even in the majors this year? Tomko has really shown improvement this year, but is inconsistent. Might be worth researching how many of his remaining starts based on the 5 day rotation will be at home/pitcher's parks.

one of the oakland pitchers (mecir/bradford) has had a really solid last 5-6 weeks.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 00:04 (twenty-one years ago)

(not noticing that one of your closers is no longer the closer: signs of a bad laissez-faire manager)

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 00:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Soriano was in the majors just long enough to add 1.7 innings and a 10.80ERA to my team

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 00:06 (twenty-one years ago)

drop rueter for tomko.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 00:56 (twenty-one years ago)

drop jenkins for whoever you can get, I love geoff but this year is a washout

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 02:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Soriano's been hurt most of the year. Juan Rincon (he of the 10-5 bullpen record, w/ a solid-to-excellent performance recently) for RS could only help.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 11:49 (twenty-one years ago)

What are CI and MI? For some reason I am under the impression that the Utility position doesn't count fielding percentage. If that's the case, I'd suggest putting Furcal's craptastic glove there if possible.

bnw (bnw), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 15:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Corner Infielder/Middle Infielder.

By the way, I balked on Zito for Lowry. We shall see how this works out (get yourself together Zito you fuck).

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 15:45 (twenty-one years ago)

soriano needs/needed TJ, i think. too bad for milo, he was a stud.

John (jdahlem), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 16:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha, between stats totalled on 8/15 and on 8/16 I increased my lead to 12 points. Go baby go, Daddy needs a new digital camera.

Fielding percentage doesn't count at all. This league (well, pretty much every rotisserie/fantasy league I've played in since 1989) would drive SABR people nuts.

Hitting categories:
Net SBs
HR
Avg
RBI
R

Pitching:
Net Svs
2xWins-L = Net Wins
Ks
ERA
WHIP

This one is a 12-team, AL/NL 40-man draft. Player moves are made primarily between the reserves and the big roster, or pay $10 to pick up a free agent.

I won't even go into my near cellar-dwelling AL-only auction league, $40 worth of Magglio down the toilet.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 18:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Damn, sleeper league! Is Mike Cameron available? Check him out, he is on fire the last 4-6 weeks.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 19:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Available hitters are teh suck. Rob Mackowiak is about as good as it gets.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 23:56 (twenty-one years ago)

ha he is my starting 2b. mark bellhorn, come home soon.

bnw (bnw), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 02:29 (twenty-one years ago)

two weeks pass...
Should I start CC Sabathia against the Yanquis today? He's played in the Bronx 4 times and is 1-3 with a 10+ ERA but are the Yanquis falling apart? I mean, he's not much worse than Westbrook who looked pretty dominant last night.

Or are the Yanquis gonna spring back to life tonight?

What are your guys'/gal's thoughts/feelings?

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 12:05 (twenty-one years ago)

pitch him. it is too late in the season not to take risks.

bnw (bnw), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 12:38 (twenty-one years ago)

pitch him we suck

John (jdahlem), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 12:54 (twenty-one years ago)

i'd say rest him 'cause torre won't put up with that kind of bs two nights in a row.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 13:45 (twenty-one years ago)

You mean Steinbrenner. I saw in today's NYT that The Boss was in the Stadium for last night's game. Here's hoping Cashman has enough rations in his panic room.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 13:47 (twenty-one years ago)

i think i'm gonna pitch him in the ILB league but bench him in my money league (i'm currently in 3rd, 10 points out of the lead).

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 13:51 (twenty-one years ago)

berkman hits FOURTH homer in last three games

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 17:31 (twenty-one years ago)

ERA and WHIP can't get hurt too much at this point from one bad outing, can they? Given the number of total innings pitched? (Can't really be helped either, of course)

On the other hand if you're in a tight race for wins and strikeouts...

Monetizing Eyeballs (diamond), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 17:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Somewhere, there's an announcer / writer chomping at the bit to say, "Berkman's gone X-for-Y since pretending to be hit by a pitch."

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 18:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Despite Javier Vazquez last night and Josh Towers last week, I'm still holding a 10-pt lead. This is stressful.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 18:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I've really charged since the All Star Break. I was in 14th place a week or so before the break and now I am only a point out of 5th!

Having Chavez and Chipper healthy and productive has really helped, Zito is also pitching better.

If I hadn't flaked out and had a closer early on, I would be much closer to the top.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 19:27 (twenty-one years ago)

in Dusty you trustied

Monetizing Eyeballs (diamond), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 19:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Should I bench Javier and put in Noah Lowry? I figure he can't be any worse and might save my ERA.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Monday, 13 September 2004 20:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Lowry looked great his last start. He was pretty sick two starts ago and volunteered only because the giants had noone available to take his spot in the rotation.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 13 September 2004 20:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Back in 5th and within a bad start of third. I need my people to start hitting homers and driving in runs like they were in early August when I made my run.

Vlad do not forsake me! You haven't hit for power in a good long while.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Tuesday, 14 September 2004 02:58 (twenty-one years ago)
