rip to the guy that, as a kid, I always thought Led Zeppelin was singing about. In "Immigrant Song", when Robert Plant sings "How we come", for the longest time i always heard that as "Bowie Kuhn"

so, RIP

THE COMMISH SO NICE WE PAY TRIBUTE TWICE

also known as "the village idiot" to Charlie Finley.

Did they have to include that in every single obituary? When I die I don't want everyone quoting my ex-girlfriend as saying I was a "fucking asshole."

I dunno, I think it's gonna be front and center in Ruben Sierra's obit, too.

we all must acknowledge the lot we cast...

I assume he's gonna be buried without a topcoat!

Hank Aaron isn't attending the funeral, he's sending Monte Irvin.

milo, what else would you call a guy who said the end of the reserve clause wd bakrupt MLB? The portrait of Kuhn in Marvin Miller's autobio is hilarious.

Dr Morbius, Saturday, 17 March 2007 16:13 (eighteen years ago)

I didn't say it was an incorrect description, only that it didn't really have to be in every single wire story/obit.

sixteen years pass...

Caught in a rare moment of doing the right thing: Kuhn's response to a fan suggesting Al Kailine's 3,000 hits will require an asterisk because of the new DH rule.

(An extra 'i' snuck in there.)

three months pass...

I'll put this on the thread of his #1 nemesis...Started assembling my costume for a Halloween party next Saturday: Charles O. Finley. When I was Rick Nielsen one year as a teacher, the kids thought I was Pee-Wee Herman; Andy Warhol last year (with a striped T-shirt), someone thought I was the Hamburglar.

I assume Finley will be mistaken for Herb Tarlek.

Sick, had to opt out. Charlie will have to wait till next year. I don't think the idea is especially time-sensitive.

Impressive that he took the time to respond to an obvious crank.

Typical Kuhn: but he couldn't find the time to attend the game where Aaron hit his 715th.

CLEVELAND, April 8 (AP) — The baseball commissioner, Bowie Kuhn, did not see Henry Aaron become baseball's home run king..

“I wish I could have been there, but I'm thrilled for him,” Kuhn said tonigt, after Aaron hit No. 715, breaking Babe Ruth's mark. “I'm proud of him. He's one of the greatest we have ever seen.”

Kuhn was at a dinner here when Aaron hit the homer on his second time at bat in Atlanta. The Indians were scheduled to have their home opener against the Milwaukee Brewers tomorrow but snow has already forced postponement of the game until Wednesday.

“I had no commitment to be there,” Kuhn said. “I was invited both to Atlanta and Cleveland and decided to accept the invitation here since I was in Cincinnati and fortunate to participate on the day Aaron hit his 714th home run.”

"I wish I could have been there."

You absolutely could and should.

That report skipped the context: Kuhn was sticking it to Aaron because Kuhn had to force him to play two out of three games in Cincinnati beforehand. Aaron wanted to skip the whole series so he could tie and break the record at home. (He played, tied it, and sat out the third game, I think.)
