The oracle has foreseen another 3rd place finnish this year.
Aside from knowing how it will end there are going to be a few interesting things to watch this year with the J's.

The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Wednesday, 21 March 2007 20:08 (nineteen years ago)

You dp realize they finished in 2nd place in the AL East last year?

Steve Shasta, Wednesday, 21 March 2007 20:11 (nineteen years ago)

You do realize that Boston is a lot better this year?

Alex in SF, Wednesday, 21 March 2007 20:12 (nineteen years ago)

And the Yankees are probably no worse (and maybe better too.)

Alex in SF, Wednesday, 21 March 2007 20:13 (nineteen years ago)

Yes i dp. And, more importantly, I also relize the second point.

The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Wednesday, 21 March 2007 20:16 (nineteen years ago)

Plus the J's may've gotten worse this year.

So...

Who will die of old age first/have their knees turn to dust?
A) Greg Zaun
B) Frank Thomas
C) Royce Clayton

Who will suffer the most horrific regression from last year?
A) Alex Rios
B) Reed Johnson
C) Frank Thomas
D) Lyle Overbay

Who will make the cut for the last two rotation spots? right now we're looking at:
1) Doc Halladay
2) Burnett
3) "Booze n' Cruise" Chacin
and (in oder of how their odds look so far)...
4/5) Tomo Ohka, Josh "the worst mlb pitcher of 2006" Towers, Casey Janssen, John Thomson, Shaun Marcum, Victor "The Crappy" Zambrano, Dustin McGowan or Ty Taubenheim

Who will Gibbons throw down with this year?
A) BJ Ryan
B) Frank Thomas
C) A random fan
D) The entire starting staff

The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Wednesday, 21 March 2007 20:28 (nineteen years ago)

A little over an hour ago I was seriously trying to think of a witty title so I could start this thread.

I had "Isn't it hilarious the way Canadians pronounce Kelly Gruber? Jays 07 Thread"

Will M., Wednesday, 21 March 2007 20:39 (nineteen years ago)

Ha ha.
I thought about doing an "or" title aswell a la Rocky and Bullwinkle:

"Ri¢hie Ri¢¢ardi & The 126 Million Dollar Man bring you the 2007 Toronto Blue Jays thread featuring the Swingin' 10 Man Rotation!

~OR~

Welcome to Mr.Rogers Neighbourhood - the 2007 J's thread"

The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Wednesday, 21 March 2007 21:01 (nineteen years ago)

Those are awesome. I will tell you though. When people from Toronto, like really from Toronto, say "Kelly Gruber," that shit is so funny.

And sorry if I don't have much to add... I only started following baseball last year, not counting 1990-1993 when I was a big baseball fan, but a child, and lived near Toronto. Alls I know is that I am glad they are rid of Delgado as their main dude, and I wish Devon White still played. That dude was my idol. THAT CATCH.

Will M., Thursday, 22 March 2007 18:31 (nineteen years ago)

Starting fights already?! What the f was your beef with Delgado??? Dude's gona be the 1st person to rock the J's jersy in the HOF! (I hope)

The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Thursday, 22 March 2007 20:54 (nineteen years ago)

I don't understand hating Delgado at all. He's one of the few ballplayers who seems like he might actually be likeable.

Alex in SF, Thursday, 22 March 2007 21:18 (nineteen years ago)

Can some hoser provide a non-IPA pronunciation guide for us Southern Canadians?

Leee, Thursday, 22 March 2007 21:21 (nineteen years ago)

Grooo-baaare haha

Alex in SF, Thursday, 22 March 2007 21:50 (nineteen years ago)

ok ok ok. I take it back. Delgado... good dude. Just dark days for my baseball-following.

Will M., Thursday, 22 March 2007 22:39 (nineteen years ago)

like the UUUUU sound from poutine, preceded by GR and followed by "bur"

kelly gruuuubur

Will M., Thursday, 22 March 2007 22:44 (nineteen years ago)

That's pretty much how this terantonian pronounces it. maybe more of an "er" than "ur" at the end but pretty much.

The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Thursday, 22 March 2007 23:17 (nineteen years ago)

"Me and McCarthy are gunna go get a two four and watch the jaaaays. love that kelly gruuubur"

Will M., Thursday, 22 March 2007 23:50 (nineteen years ago)

I am derailing the hell out of this thread. So... uh... Glaus vs. Overbay. Who bought Chacin cologne last year?

Will M., Thursday, 22 March 2007 23:51 (nineteen years ago)

It's all good, around these parts derails are like cocoons beautiful threads emerge from.

The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Friday, 23 March 2007 14:20 (nineteen years ago)

I'll hafta make it up to TO this summer so yall can pronounce Grooooobur for me.

Dr Morbius, Friday, 23 March 2007 14:36 (nineteen years ago)

Or I could say it for you when get down there in August.
Grewburr.

The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Friday, 23 March 2007 15:29 (nineteen years ago)

sadly I'm in MTL where we only pronounce one of the S's in "moises alou"

Will M., Friday, 23 March 2007 19:04 (nineteen years ago)

I wanna take the quiz!

B) Frank Thomas

Zaun has already defied time and space by suddenly turning into a decent starting catcher while north of 30. Thomas is out of lives. Clayton I couldn't care less about.

A) Alex Rios

DUH (unless his post-injury performance already counts as regression)

4) and 5) I'd go with Ohka and Janssen

E) all of the above, plus two hosers outside of East Side Mario's on Front Street, plus a sausage vendor outside Rogers Centre, plus a group of teenagers who walk on the cycling/blading path in the East Beaches (OK this is annoying), plus the entire Ontario legislature

NoTimeBeforeTime, Sunday, 25 March 2007 12:22 (nineteen years ago)

Okha is in a 4, apparently

Will M., Thursday, 29 March 2007 20:29 (nineteen years ago)

Sweet!
After the J's failed to sign Lilly or Meche I started saying I thought he was our next best option (for the $$$ value). And I guess it's down to Towers or Jansen in the #5. I'm hedging my bets on Towers right now.

The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Thursday, 29 March 2007 20:56 (nineteen years ago)

Joe Sheehan of BP projects Jays for 76 wins: "Virtually every position player was at or near the top of his range, and years like that tend to be followed by…different ones. Speed is overrated, but you can be too slow, and this Jays team is the slowest I can remember in a long time, especially through the middle of the lineup. ...John Gibbons should be the first manager fired this season."

Dr Morbius, Friday, 30 March 2007 13:16 (nineteen years ago)

Woo! Off to a good start!

David R., Thursday, 5 April 2007 14:48 (nineteen years ago)

(Don't say "first base.")

David R., Thursday, 5 April 2007 14:48 (nineteen years ago)

um... a torn right rotator cuff?

The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Thursday, 5 April 2007 15:34 (nineteen years ago)

The correct answer is, "a taco."

David R., Thursday, 5 April 2007 15:37 (nineteen years ago)

Just one? I woulda never guessed that.

The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Thursday, 5 April 2007 16:03 (nineteen years ago)

FIRST BASE

David R., Thursday, 5 April 2007 17:58 (nineteen years ago)

wait...

WHY ON EARTH does gustavo chacin have his own fragrance? anybody?

j.q higgins, Thursday, 5 April 2007 18:19 (nineteen years ago)

his last name sounds like a cologne according to the hilarious morning guys on blue jays radio

francisF, Thursday, 5 April 2007 18:22 (nineteen years ago)

Because he stinks.

The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Thursday, 5 April 2007 18:37 (nineteen years ago)

but they ACTUALLY MADE A COLOGNE after the "hilaroius morning guys" made the joke that he should have one... handed it out at one of the games... worst promo ever

Will M., Thursday, 5 April 2007 19:44 (nineteen years ago)

spelling is for chumps anyway.

Will M., Thursday, 5 April 2007 19:45 (nineteen years ago)

I actaully thought it was almost clever.

The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Thursday, 5 April 2007 20:17 (nineteen years ago)

would've been better if he wasn't injured throughout the promotion

francisF, Thursday, 5 April 2007 20:34 (nineteen years ago)

What a gem by Hallady last night! Who the fuck pitches 10 innings these days?

The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Saturday, 14 April 2007 16:34 (nineteen years ago)

Not Jeremy Bonderman, despite a similar dominant low-pitch performance through nine innings.

Andy K, Saturday, 14 April 2007 18:34 (nineteen years ago)

LOOK AT THIS

Andy K, Saturday, 14 April 2007 21:12 (nineteen years ago)

Ice. Freakin. Cold. going into fenway & yankees stadium

francisF, Sunday, 22 April 2007 23:47 (nineteen years ago)

Man did Halladay pitch like a god last night! And after I find out, once again, Chacin has a boo boo. Zambrano is already replacing Towers so I'm going to guess it's either going to be Jansen, who's been doing great in the pen, or McGowan who's been doing great in AAA.

I think Janssen is too important to the pen right now and we might see McStrange Animal come up. And most likely tank again, as he usually does in the bigs.

The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 14:57 (nineteen years ago)

Jack (Toronto): Rob, can we stop the ridiculous questions about who the second best pitcher in baseball is behind Santana? Halladay is head and shoulders above everyone else. I'm not so sure he isn't on par with Santana. Who do you want pitching in a big game? I say they are 1 and 1A.

Rob Neyer: (12:05 PM ET ) Really? I mean, really? I'm not sure one game constitutes conclusive evidence. Halladay's started only 72 games over the last three seasons, which is reason enough to doubt his status as 1A.

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 1 May 2007 16:48 (nineteen years ago)

That was pretty great.

Andy K, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 13:20 (nineteen years ago)

Good news for Jays fans finally! In a Baseball Prospectus article, Bryan Smith gave out the Draft Awards, and guess who took home top honours?

Best Draft: Toronto Blue Jays

It's hard to believe that the Blue Jays were the organization with the most well-balanced blend of players on Thursday, but Jon Lalonde had a great draft. The team picked a good infield of prepsters that should progress together up through the minors--Kevin Ahrens, Justin Jackson, and John Tolisano. Lalonde also went with his usual habits, picking a powerful collegian in J.P. Arencibia and an accomplished southpaw in Brett Cecil. I also really like how the Blue Jays ended with day, drafting southpaw Brad Mills and groundball artist Marc Rzepczynski. One of the game's worst farm systems might have about seven new members for its top ten prospect list.

Wells/Stairs: the most unlikely 1-2 hitters ever?

Andy K, Monday, 3 September 2007 23:11 (eighteen years ago)

Will Carroll:

So the Jays admit that Wells was injured when they signed him, but decided that insurance was too costly. I think what they mean to say is that he couldn't have passed the physical. Wells' chronic shoulder problems haven't affected his play or availability over the last couple seasons, so the degradation that he's allegedly dealing with now seems a bit odd. If the shoulder is degrading—not unlike what we've seen with Scott Rolen—then both his ability to play the field over the duration of his contract as well as his ability to hit to the standards his salary demands are called into question. While the power numbers are down slightly, I'm not sure that's not more run environment than injury at this stage, but that's another way of trying to excuse the return on investment for a team with plenty of problems heading into next season.

The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 03:01 (eighteen years ago)

I'm as gay for Halladay as anyone out there, but Gibbons has to learn to take the guy out of the game sometimes.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 07:32 (eighteen years ago)

BEFORE the 9th inning starts, I mean.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 07:36 (eighteen years ago)

He wound up throwing a lot of pitches but he HAD faced the minimum in the seventh and eighth. He was on his way to doing that in the ninth, too, after Timo's DP. And he does still pretty much own the Tigers. The temptation to leave him in there is understandable.

Andy K, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 09:52 (eighteen years ago)

The biggest mistake was allowing Granderson to face a right-hander.

Andy K, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 10:16 (eighteen years ago)

For me, the bigger issue is that just because he is capable of finishing the game, it doesn't mean that he should. It wasn't one of those cases when the bullpen was overworked and you need to ask more of your starter. Greg Maddux (another low pitch count, low BB rate guy) would throw 75 pitches in six innings and leave with a 4-1 lead (hell, he still does). Sure, he could throw more but you don't always have to.

Maddux, Smoltz and Glavine were all handled that way in Atlanta and it's probably a big reason why they're all still very good pitchers.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 11:39 (eighteen years ago)

No, I wouldn't've left him in, either. I understand the temptation to let him finish, is all.

(Was Accardo unavailable?)

Andy K, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 12:11 (eighteen years ago)

Accardo blew the game two days earlier, but was otherwise available, I guess. Although even a ragtag assortment of bullpenners should be capable of holding a three run lead in one inning.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 12:29 (eighteen years ago)

with two outs.

Gibbons Q&A in BP: http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=6715

ugh:

DL: What did you think when you saw Grady Little stick with Pedro Martinez in Game Seven of the 2003 ALCS?

JG: I don’t think that anyone, realistically, can even comment on that. We weren’t in his shoes, and we didn’t know what was going on in his mind, or with Pedro--their relationship, what his status was, what his workload had been. The way it turned out, there was a huge uproar and backlash about it, but there were also a lot of people out there who, if he had made the move, and the game still got away from them, they would have criticized that, too ... So it’s not a perfect science, and unless you know what’s going on in that pitcher’s head, or in the clubhouse, what this pitcher has been doing the last two or three weeks, the magnitude of the game, how he’s doing in that particular game at the time, who is coming up. Unless you’re in those shoes, I don’t think it’s fair to try to analyze what someone else did.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Monday, 17 September 2007 16:20 (eighteen years ago)

uh ... at the time, we actually did know his workload, the magnitude of the game, how he was doing in that particular game at the time, who was coming up, and what his status was (i.e. how he had fared when pitching deep into games all year long).

Gibbons sucks. Take Halladay out of games! I fear for the day (let's take bets: July 2008, Jays one game over .500, Marcum and Burnett on the DL) when he claims that those guys didn't seem to be labouring, so what's the matter with letting them throw 120 pitches all the time?

NoTimeBeforeTime, Monday, 17 September 2007 16:24 (eighteen years ago)

Who here knew that Gibbons won a title with the 1986 Mets? (besides Morbs)

DL: A lot of people don’t realize that you have a World Series ring. Tell us about that, including what it means to you.

JG: It’s a dream come true, it really is. It’s from when I was with the 1986 New York Mets, and Gary Carter was injured at the beginning of August. He was playing first base one day, and dislocated his thumb, so I got called up from Triple-A when he went on the Disabled List. So I caught a few games, and then hung around in September after he was activated. When we got to the playoffs, Rick Anderson--who’s now the pitching coach for the Twins--and I weren’t on the postseason roster, but we were still around just in case someone got hurt and they had to activate one of us for the next series. So I was there with the team in Houston, and then Boston, and even though I didn’t get to participate, it was still a thrill. I had a chance to be with the team for two months, and it was arguably one of the best teams ever. It was a wild and crazy team, and also one that was very talented. It was a team that only had one thing on its mind, and that was to win. That’s what it’s all about.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Monday, 17 September 2007 16:33 (eighteen years ago)

Let's see how I did on the beginning-of-year quiz:

1. Who will fall apart first?

B) Frank Thomas

Zaun has already defied time and space by suddenly turning into a decent starting catcher while north of 30. Thomas is out of lives. Clayton I couldn't care less about.

Haha, whoops

2. Who will regress the most?

A) Alex Rios

DUH (unless his post-injury performance already counts as regression)

Looks like I messed up there too.

3. Who should start?

4) and 5) I'd go with Ohka and Janssen

Hahahahaha, well, Janssen HAS been pretty good out of the bullpen. I still think I have a mental block with McGowan from his start last year in Detroit, when the team left him out to dry to give up about 14 runs.

4. Who will Gibbons fight?

E) all of the above, plus two hosers outside of East Side Mario's on Front Street, plus a sausage vendor outside Rogers Centre, plus a group of teenagers who walk on the cycling/blading path in the East Beaches (OK this is annoying), plus the entire Ontario legislature

Damn you, Gibbons!
