I was going to start a thread asking how many of you saw Fidrych’s Monday Night Baseball start against the Yankees, but I figured I’d make the question more general. I’ve been making lists of favourite songs and films for as long as I can remember, but I’ve never made a baseball list. Pick as many as you want, provided you saw it as it happened.
1. Carter’s home run, ’93 Series. (I’m in Toronto, so obvious #1.)
2. Reggie’s third home run, ’77 Series.
3. Game 6, ’75 Series. (The game in total; I was rooting for the Reds, so I can’t go for Fisk’s home run.)
4. Mark Fidrych beating the Yankees on national TV, June 28. ’76.
5. George Bell’s catch to win the Jays’ first divisional title, ’85.
6. Aaron’s 715th, ’74.
7. Gonzalez’s Series-winning hit, 2001.
8. Griffey/Thomas home-run derby, ’94. (Just an exhibition, I know.)
9. The Aaron Boone game, 2003.
10. McGwire’s 62nd, ’98, and Bonds’ 71st, 2001. (Downgraded.)
11. The 15-14 game, ’93 Series.
Not surprisingly, all of these I saw on TV. I made my list fairly quickly, so I’m sure I’ve left something off. Embarrassing omission for a Toronto fan: Alomar’s home run against Eckersley in the ’92 playoffs. Convinced the Jays were headed for yet another post-season loss, a friend and I had switched over to one of the Clinton/Bush/Perot debates...I missed it.

That Kirk Gibson homer where he's up to bat with his broken leg bones sticking out, and he's hooked up to an IV.

Seaver and Mays live, I'm majorly envious...About the best I can come up with live was a wild Jays win over the Tigers in September '87, their last win of the year before they embarked on their historic collapse. I remember the Harrelson/Rose fight, but not so much the fallout. Love WmC's description of the Gibson homer, which would be on my list of overrated moments. I understand why it's famous, but to me it's still Game 1; personally I found Gibson's home run against Gossage in the final game of the '84 Series--the one where you can see Sparky Anderson incredulously mouth "They want to pitch to you"--more dramatic, even though the Series itself was lopsided.

live: 95 alds game 5, edgar martinez knocks in griffey, yankees go home
on tv: the ball through buckner's legs, seemed like a big deal to me at 13, even in the moment

i saw tom seaver's 300th win.
but probably a-rod announcing he would opt out of his contract during game 4 of the 2007 world series would be the highlight.
