Yankees bought (at least) one world championship with CC. Winnar.

if I had to pick one for RIGHT NOW it'd be CC
full contract I may actually go Howard for 5 yrs. Mauer looks like Paul Lo Duca lately.

bnw, Monday, 26 July 2010 19:56 (fifteen years ago)

I'll take Teixeira.

keep in mind the howard contract doesn't START until 2012

5 years of howard starting this would be much much better

I'd say Mauer followed by Sabathia. It's amazing how Sabathia just rolls along. There are probably always at least five guys better than him in any specific year, but over the long haul, he may be in line for 300.

pounds?

:) Yes--the legendary Lolich Line that gets you an automatic pass into Cooperstown.

clemenza, Monday, 26 July 2010 21:53 (fifteen years ago)

holliday has possibly the best skillset for longevity (hits for high average and decent power) but he's already 30

mauer's the youngest in his last year of contract so he'll probably be hitting the best at the end but if he has to move off catcher he's not gonna be hitting awesomely for a 1B/DH

I have to say Mauer. For a young AL catcher who is the consensus best in the AL year in/out, that is the best value.

You do raise a valid point about Sabathia's weight, and whether or not that will preclude the kind of longevity you need to get to 300 wins. I don't know--Ryan and Johnson and Maddux were all pretty athletic. (Also Clemens, who got some extra help.) Sabathia makes me think of the slugging first baseman-type who goes into rapid decline: Mo Vaughn, Cecil Fielder, Ortiz. I checked Killebrew, Powell, and Howard, and they all started to wear down between 34-36. I checked Lolich, too, but Baseball Reference lists his playing weight at 170! That ain't how I remember him...

wonder if Mauer is gonna more often hit 25 or 8 HR

i doubt he cracks 20 again unless he changes his approach, last year was pretty flukey

what was up with that anyways?

shove it

kind of shrill and very self-righteous (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 27 July 2010 11:16 (fifteen years ago)

thermo he's a opposite field hitter, not a pull hitter, and last year he managed to hit a bunch of balls the other way so hard that they went out of the park

opposite field home runs are kind of flukey though and there's no reason to expect him to continue to hit a lot of home runs without pulling the ball

all i know is minneapolis city center has hundreds of joe mauer statues positioned one to every street corner. they are tatooed with skeins of past teams and corporate sponsors ala rauschenberg or better yet those chicago art cows on parade.

noticing the first one was pretty cool. finding the third and fourth one was an UH moment. open laughter for each thereafter.

GISing for em but this is funnier:

yeah health is the elephant in the room w/r/t the mauer contract, otherwise it'd be the best one here easy
