Dale Murphy was in many ways an athletic baseball player like many today, as he was so tall. I remember his height 6'5" was one reason stated why he was moved from behind the plate. Murphy had long arms and just seems to whip the bat through the strike zone.

Three or four more peak-level seasons and he’s be in the HOF easy. He’s kind of like Mattingly in that he had those half dozen all-time seasons but declined rapidly. Done by as a star after 31.

What I remember vividly was that for those years though it seemed like Murphy and Schmidt were trading MVPs and were far and away the best players in the NL.
