The 2007 White Sox Thread: Back to the Grind (or, 2nd Place Would Be an Accomplishment)

So, no Chisox thread here yet...I guess it can't hurt to start one.

I predicted 87 wins and third place for this team, finishing behind the Tigers and Indians. The way the Twins have played so far makes me think it might be fourth place for the Sox this year.

The first 5 games of the year haven't been much to crow about. They're 2-3, and one of those wins was due to Roberto Hernandez's complete suckitude.

Pitching-wise, they've gotten one outstanding start from Javier Vazquez, who managed to make it into the 7th inning on Saturday without imploding, something he didn't do much of in 2006. Yesterday's MLB debut from John Danks was also peachy despite his loss (to Cy Santana). Elsewise, Contreras was complete horseshit in the opener, Garland turned into a marshmallow with a 3-run lead in the 2nd, and Buehrle got nailed with a liner off his arm early in his game, so not a whole lot to point to with those guys. I'm liking our 'pen -- Jenks, Aardsma, Sisco, Masset and MacDougal have all done nicely, give or take an inning or two.

If they just had some more production from these guys, they'd be 3-2 or even 4-1:

Pierzynski .111
Dye .118
Thome .118
Iguchi .143

Thome in particular is hacking away at everything -- 8 Ks in 17 ABs already. The offensive MVPs have been Erstad, who's turning into a great pickup (at the cost of playing time for Brian Anderson), Konerko (who's looking slump-proof), and most surprisingly, Podsednik and his .462 OBP. Not too wild about Pods being caught stealing 2 out of 3 times by the Indians' Victor Martinez, though.

Tonight starts the dreaded West Coast Road Trip, where the Sox usually shit themselves. But who knows.

I loooooooooooooooooove the White Sox.

David R., Monday, 9 April 2007 19:04 (eighteen years ago)

more than you loooooooooove Grindhouse? (prepare for 9 innings of grief)

Dr Morbius, Monday, 9 April 2007 19:54 (eighteen years ago)

Jenks blows the game last night (with an assist from Pods' noggin) and cuts through the A's lineup 1-2-3 in the 9th today. The Sox take 2 of 3 from the A's in Oakland for their first winning series in Oakland since 2000, and they get pretty great starting pitching (except for Buehrle's first inning today). Back to .500 and onto Cleveland (or Milwaukee, if this shitty weather keeps up).

Baked Bean Teeth, Thursday, 12 April 2007 01:35 (eighteen years ago)

Was at the game in Oakland today. Street choked big time.

Belisarius, Thursday, 12 April 2007 03:25 (eighteen years ago)

BA update:

Dye .235
Crede .220
Iguchi .214
Konerko .211
Erstad .189
Pierzynski .147

It's a miracle they're only 1 game below .500. Jesus.

Baked Bean Teeth, Monday, 16 April 2007 20:52 (eighteen years ago)

BA Update for the last 7 days:

Jermaine Dye = .353/.429/.706 = 1.135 OPS w/ 2 HRs, 4 runs scored, 6 RBIs

Steve Shasta, Monday, 16 April 2007 21:09 (eighteen years ago)

Sox offensive production the last 3 games:

Tuesday 1 run, 4 hits
Sunday 1 run, 6 hits
Saturday 0 runs, 8 hits

They now have 4 starting players hitting below .200, with Dye and Konerko hovering just above it.

DUDE IT'S A ONE WALK NO HITTER

David R., Thursday, 19 April 2007 02:33 (eighteen years ago)

Congratulations to Mark Buehrle! First Sox no-no since 1991.

And, probably more importantly, the Sox won. And Jermaine Dye snapped out of his offensive funk with a grand slam after fouling off 6 pitches in a row.

Baked Bean Teeth, Thursday, 19 April 2007 03:04 (eighteen years ago)

beautiful.

Stormy Davis, Thursday, 19 April 2007 05:22 (eighteen years ago)

you always thought he had it in him .. with that relaxed manner and that quick delivery and those low pitch counts. Same thing that got his ass a 5 era last year (he got married) but also same thing that can lead to tonight

Stormy Davis, Thursday, 19 April 2007 05:23 (eighteen years ago)

lol @ old Buehrle VS. Wood debates on the ESPN message boards

three weeks pass...
lol whut:
“A-Rod is going to play for the city of Chicago. He’s going to talk to Mayor Daley. When we’re in town, he’s going to play for the White Sox. When we leave town, he will play for the Cubs. When we play against each other, and we’re home, he will play for us; when we play at Wrigley, he will represent the Cubs. Say it’s so. Mr. Daley will pay the Cubs, just to make everybody in Chicago. Now he’s a savior for both teams, and we got him.”

White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen, facetiously addressing all the speculation over Alex Rodriguez’s potential free agency.

REVIVE!

RollingWave (Taiwan): White Sox finsihing behind the Royals might not be a strange site in the near future.... (or now really, they are trailing them 6-2 and holds a 1 game lead)

Nate Silver: Ozzie Guillen really wanted to win that game last night. He used six different pitchers over the course of six Royals batters between the seventh and ninth innings last night, which might actually be some kind of record in the non-La Russa division. If they finish behind the Royals, the media is going to go crazy around here, and some people might have to fear for their jobs.

Dr Morbius, Wednesday, 22 August 2007 21:04 (seventeen years ago)

They currently have the same record as the Royals, have scored 33 fewer runs than the Royals, and have given up 44 more runs than the Royals.

Andy K, Wednesday, 22 August 2007 21:48 (seventeen years ago)

would this be the quickest 'fall' after a world championship?

Dr Morbius, Thursday, 23 August 2007 14:15 (seventeen years ago)

Um Marlins.

Alex in SF, Thursday, 23 August 2007 14:51 (seventeen years ago)

And the White Sox are in last place.

Andy K, Saturday, 25 August 2007 03:27 (seventeen years ago)

GO BLUE

Michael F Gill, Saturday, 25 August 2007 04:30 (seventeen years ago)

Would this be the quickest "fall" after a world championship with pretty much the same team?

NoTimeBeforeTime, Monday, 27 August 2007 04:10 (seventeen years ago)

well Marlins wasn't a 'fall' so much as a dive.

Dr Morbius, Monday, 27 August 2007 13:41 (seventeen years ago)

"The Red Sox became the fourth team since 1900 to score 10 or more runs against the same team four straight times. The St. Louis Browns did it twice, in 1920 and '22, and the Rockies did it in 1996. The Red Sox scored 10 or more runs in four straight games overall for the first time since June 2-5, 1950, when they went 11, 11, 17 and, 12 against the Indians and White Sox"

zaxxon25, Monday, 27 August 2007 19:14 (seventeen years ago)

Morbs, the Marlins were not quite the same team as NTBT qualifies his statement with!

Guillen gets an extension.

Andy K, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 22:56 (seventeen years ago)

From ESPN:

"Guillen's made a name for himself not only for his managing style and success but for controversial comments and opinions that often have caused controversy."
