Fucking guy is made of glass.

Alex in SF, Monday, 16 April 2007 01:16 (eighteen years ago)

Meanwhile Scutaro pops a 325 foot shot off Rivera to beat the Yanks 2 out of 3. So yeah go A's!

Alex in SF, Monday, 16 April 2007 01:17 (eighteen years ago)

Nice, they won.

Too bad the game I watched for 14 innings last night was a bust.

Belisarius, Monday, 16 April 2007 01:25 (eighteen years ago)

I was there last night too. We left after the bottom of the twelth, so we didn't have to watch Jason Giambi stab me in the heart. Was cold as hell too which made the whole thing even more annoying.

Alex in SF, Monday, 16 April 2007 01:33 (eighteen years ago)

I'm glad you finally started this, or I was gonna call it "Piazza Don't Squat."

So Alex, would we hafta buy advance tix for Red Sox on June 4? (If Santana pitches in Twins series, I wd go, but understand you are ambivalent.)

Dr Morbius, Monday, 16 April 2007 13:47 (eighteen years ago)

Well I can't do the Friday or Saturday games and you can't do the Sunday one so I think the Twins series may be out. We should probably get advance tickets for the Red Sox game since the upper deck is closed. Every Yankee game sold out this weekend.

Alex in SF, Monday, 16 April 2007 14:51 (eighteen years ago)

gotcha.

Dr Morbius, Monday, 16 April 2007 15:11 (eighteen years ago)

Is Shasta coming along?

Alex in SF, Monday, 16 April 2007 17:41 (eighteen years ago)

I would love to but I'll be in NYC & Miami that week.

Steve Shasta, Monday, 16 April 2007 17:53 (eighteen years ago)

[also: there were a ton of decent Yankees-A's tix on craigslist yesterday, saw 4xlower deck 3B side = $120, which isn't exactly highway robbery].

Steve Shasta, Monday, 16 April 2007 17:54 (eighteen years ago)

That's pretty close to face value actually.

Alex in SF, Monday, 16 April 2007 18:04 (eighteen years ago)

Actually no that's less than face value.

Alex in SF, Monday, 16 April 2007 18:04 (eighteen years ago)

nice, it was posted at 11:30am and we would have had to boogie woogied to get over there by 1:05pm.

Steve Shasta, Monday, 16 April 2007 18:33 (eighteen years ago)

1. Dan Haren, Oak 1.41
2. Rich Harden, Oak 1.42
3. Andy Pettitte, NYY 1.78
4. Chad Gaudin, Oak 1.85

Andy K, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 14:32 (eighteen years ago)

Pity #2 just got tossed on the DL until May 1st at the earliest. And Bradly just joined him there. Sigh.

Alex in SF, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 16:16 (eighteen years ago)

May 1st is only a week away!

David R., Tuesday, 24 April 2007 17:46 (eighteen years ago)

what year?

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 17:55 (eighteen years ago)

Haha supposedly this one. I'm not sure I believe it though.

Alex in SF, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 17:57 (eighteen years ago)

Meanwhile screwballer Dallas Braden's line through 6:

H: 3
R: 1
ER: 1
W: 1
SO: 6
ERA: 1.50

Alex in SF, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 20:54 (eighteen years ago)

Also Nick Swisher leaves game with a hamstring injury. I'm shooting for the entire starting lineup to be on the DL by mid-next month.

Alex in SF, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 21:04 (eighteen years ago)

Oy, Morning Harden out another two weeks.

I've always been curious, Alex (and other A's partisans), are you just kind, "Enh, A's scuffling in first half, wake me till after July 31"? Or, "Consarmit, can we put together a decent first half for once?"

Leee, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 20:55 (eighteen years ago)

The latter. I find it really upsetting.

Alex in SF, Thursday, 3 May 2007 02:39 (eighteen years ago)

Esp. since the rest of the American League got so damned good. It was okay when there was a better than good chance of making the WC, but with the Central as strong as it is and the Red Sox, Angels and Yankees being perennial contenders well let's say the fact that we just can't get the offense going til June at the earliest hurts.

Alex in SF, Thursday, 3 May 2007 02:42 (eighteen years ago)

any comment on all the trade activity? i like the denorfia deal for you guys and liked the langerhans deal. langerhans for snelling? kind of bummed to see the nats part w/ snelling.

j.q higgins, Thursday, 3 May 2007 13:12 (eighteen years ago)

Everything Beane has done I've liked. Snelling, particularly, has real potential. Plus he's super easy to root for.

Alex in SF, Thursday, 3 May 2007 13:30 (eighteen years ago)

I'm curious (even though I'd rather keep his injured ass) how much Harden fetches if Beane seriously shops him.

Alex in SF, Thursday, 3 May 2007 13:31 (eighteen years ago)

Also, given Snelling's injury history, he fits right in!

I wonder if Beane swung that trade after seeing Langerhans muff that fly ball.

David R., Thursday, 3 May 2007 13:44 (eighteen years ago)

I wonder what the record for most DL time is.

Alex in SF, Thursday, 3 May 2007 14:40 (eighteen years ago)

lol piazza :[

the harsh light of the warriors success is not flattering to the blemished flesh of the a's

cankles, Saturday, 5 May 2007 07:41 (eighteen years ago)

Jason Kendall is really annoying me.

On the other hand, Jack Cust, Chris Snelling and Dan Johnson are making me very happy! Yay AAAA players!

Alex in SF, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 15:39 (eighteen years ago)

Ha - to be fair to Snelling, he'd be a major leaguer all the way if he could stay healthy for more than 5 games in a row.

David R., Wednesday, 9 May 2007 16:50 (eighteen years ago)

Someone on Athletics Nation was speculating what would happen to Snelling once the rest of the A's outfielders get off the DL which seems to be weirdly optimistic about a) Bradley, Kotsay and Kielty's health and b) Snelling's as well!

Alex in SF, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 17:05 (eighteen years ago)

You will regret Kendall til contract is up.

Dr Morbius, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 17:09 (eighteen years ago)

Which thankfully is the end of this year, cuz despite Kendall's public pleas I don't see Beane re-upping.

Alex in SF, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 17:18 (eighteen years ago)

Sacramento Rivercats (#1 record in PCL):

Catchers
Adam Melhuse - .375/.375/.625
Kurt Suzuki - .306/.388/.387
Jeremy "Fat Catcher" Brown - .235/.297/.441
JD Closser - .250/.333/.375
David Castillo - .143/.333/.571

Steve Shasta, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 17:25 (eighteen years ago)

CUST strikes again!

Dr Morbius, Thursday, 10 May 2007 19:25 (eighteen years ago)

oh no: OAKLAND CENTER FIELDER CHRIS SNELLING LEFT THE GAME IN THE BOTTOM OF THE SECOND INNING DUE TO A LEFT KNEE CONTUSION.

David R., Thursday, 10 May 2007 19:53 (eighteen years ago)

I think he ran into Mike Sweeney in a bang-bang play at 1st.

Steve Shasta, Thursday, 10 May 2007 19:55 (eighteen years ago)

[also: looks like the A's really are moving to Fremont unfortunately]

Steve Shasta, Thursday, 10 May 2007 20:18 (eighteen years ago)

Snelling was really playing well too. :(

Alex in SF, Thursday, 10 May 2007 21:08 (eighteen years ago)

And Cust is playing really well! I hope he can keep it up. I think his story is at least as cool as say Josh Hamiltons.

Alex in SF, Saturday, 12 May 2007 15:25 (eighteen years ago)

What was Cust's addiction, rereading his mentions in Moneyball?

Alex, I have printed out 6/4 tix (which could be a Beckett start if there are no rainouts).

Dr Morbius, Sunday, 13 May 2007 19:02 (eighteen years ago)

Excellent.

I didn't realize Cust was even mentioned in Moneyball. Glazed donuts maybe?

Alex in SF, Sunday, 13 May 2007 19:27 (eighteen years ago)

God Chavez' suckiness is maddening.

Alex in SF, Sunday, 13 May 2007 21:39 (eighteen years ago)

OTOH JACK CUST IS PLAYING OUT OF HIS FUCKING MIND!

Alex in SF, Sunday, 13 May 2007 23:36 (eighteen years ago)

I like that Cust has a similarity index in PECOTA of 18 (meaning that there are very few if any players in the history of the game who have had this guy's career path.)

Alex in SF, Sunday, 13 May 2007 23:52 (eighteen years ago)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ctswOImIEc4

Fuck moving him to LF though. Let him DH or fumble around at 1B and Pizza'll catch and Kendall can look at the want ads.

Alex in SF, Monday, 14 May 2007 04:13 (eighteen years ago)

10 years in the minors with diminishing slugging with each level attained, I'm pretty sure this guy is going to be the next Jason Giambi, or even John Jaha for that matter. Still, it's a killer streak... pretty damn amazing to get called up (his 4th trip to the bigs I believe?) in the midst of a career hot-streak.

Steve Shasta, Monday, 14 May 2007 05:45 (eighteen years ago)

ESB: "Cust has six home runs in 26 at-bats this season (4.3 AB/HR) after hitting only five homers in 144 previous at-bats in the majors (one every 28.8 ABs).'

Steve Shasta, Monday, 14 May 2007 05:48 (eighteen years ago)

"... I'm pretty sure this guy is *NOT* going to be the..."

Steve Shasta, Monday, 14 May 2007 06:29 (eighteen years ago)

I don't think any closer for the A's is going to be quite that busy.

The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 13:53 (seventeen years ago)

Thermo OTM.

Steve Shasta, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 14:58 (seventeen years ago)

If they want Harden in the rotation in 3 weeks, he shouldn't be throwing every day, right? Hence no closing?

-- Dr Morbius, Tuesday, June 26, 2007 6:36 AM (2 hours ago)

i think it's a committee right now and he could be part of that Santiago Casilla (RHP) and Alan Embree (LHP) action.

-- Steve Shasta, Friday, June 22, 2007 10:40 AM (4 days ago)

Steve Shasta, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 16:06 (seventeen years ago)

btw, Will Carroll:

The late word from Oakland is that Harden is sounding very negative, comparing his shoulder pain now to what he had prior to going on the DL.

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 16:18 (seventeen years ago)

IN JACK WE CUST

cust just taco'd again, his 5th in the last 8 games!

cankles, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 23:43 (seventeen years ago)

I love Rob Deer 2.0 so much.

Alex in SF, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 23:49 (seventeen years ago)

THE THREE TRUE OUTCOMES

Steve Shasta, Wednesday, 27 June 2007 23:52 (seventeen years ago)

Justin Duchscherer will have season-ending hip surgery. RIP.

Steve Shasta, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 16:49 (seventeen years ago)

Yup. And Harden won't pitch til this weekend and Street may or may not be back soon. Sigh.

Alex in SF, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 16:51 (seventeen years ago)

A lonely Nick Swisher now dances alone. :(

Andy K, Friday, 6 July 2007 09:45 (seventeen years ago)

Joe Blanton needs a nice long suspension

"I hit somebody and I'm not even sure what happened after that. I didn't think I did anything wrong."

jergïns, Monday, 9 July 2007 01:37 (seventeen years ago)

Harden on DL until at least September.

Steve Shasta, Thursday, 12 July 2007 15:52 (seventeen years ago)

Dr Morbius, Thursday, 12 July 2007 15:56 (seventeen years ago)

F#&@!

Alex in SF, Thursday, 12 July 2007 17:08 (seventeen years ago)

Bye bye Jason Kendall.

Alex in SF, Tuesday, 17 July 2007 15:57 (seventeen years ago)

a WILY VETERAN PRESENCE

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 17 July 2007 16:25 (seventeen years ago)

Any guesses as to what the 2008 A's will look like? Daric Barton at first? Who starts other than Haren and Gaudin? Will they keep Stewart? Will Chavez ever be good again? Crosby?

Also, if you can trade Huston Street for a solid starter or position player, don't you have to do it at this point?

polyphonic, Tuesday, 17 July 2007 18:40 (seventeen years ago)

Texas gonna catch em?

Dr Morbius, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 13:49 (seventeen years ago)

Can you believe that Bobby Crosby went down AGAIN last night? Hit in the hand by a pitch. We've seen this before. Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah! This is the season from hell . . . anyone sees any info on whether the hand is OK please post it.

Two straight against the Angels in Anaheim is supposed to be good news.

Kenny, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 18:11 (seventeen years ago)

Even if it isn't okay, it's not like Crosby is a vast improvement over Scutaro or any AAA scrub they are likely to call up at this point.

Alex in SF, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 20:15 (seventeen years ago)

Thanks for Milton Bradley!

polyphonic, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 21:36 (seventeen years ago)

Even if it isn't okay, it's not like Crosby is a vast improvement over Scutaro or any AAA scrub they are likely to call up at this point.

All too true, though Crosby's still a better fielder. On the other hand, Scutaro is a better clutch hitter, which would seem to be the A's larger problem. (Well, actually, hitting at all is their larger problem.)

Kenny, Thursday, 26 July 2007 00:45 (seventeen years ago)

anyone up for lackey vs. haren on sunday?

Steve Shasta, Wednesday, 1 August 2007 06:17 (seventeen years ago)

The only bright spots in this awful awful season are Jack Cust and Dan Haren.

Alex in SF, Saturday, 11 August 2007 02:00 (seventeen years ago)

what about milton bra-- oh :(

cankles, Saturday, 11 August 2007 02:10 (seventeen years ago)

steve shasta did you go on sunday? because i did

mookieproof, Saturday, 11 August 2007 04:02 (seventeen years ago)

that was quite a hitfest last nite.

Dr Morbius, Saturday, 11 August 2007 16:04 (seventeen years ago)

I suspect today's matchup will be lower scoring.

Alex in SF, Saturday, 11 August 2007 18:40 (seventeen years ago)

I think Alex jinxed Harden with this thread title! T_T

Steve Shasta, Monday, 13 August 2007 15:11 (seventeen years ago)

C Kahrl on When Moneyball Stops Working:

http://www.nysun.com/article/60256

Dr Morbius, Saturday, 18 August 2007 16:47 (seventeen years ago)

That article seems pretty unduly harsh. I don't doubt that the rest of the GMs have gotten smarter, but the Beane's still done a pretty good job putting a contending team on the field and picking up useful and undervalued players and producing solid ballplayers from within. And really 80% of the A's problems this year have been injury related. Despite that they've still got a good run differential and I like their chances to contend next year and the year after.

Alex in SF, Saturday, 18 August 2007 17:04 (seventeen years ago)

this makes me wonder about the clubhouse issues that are apparently pretty shitty (eg, Milton Bradley chicken little/crying wolf no longer).

Jason Kendall
2007 OAK .226/.261/.281 = .542 OPS
2007 CHC .299/.407/.429 = .835 OPS

Pre-All Star Break ERA
2007 OAK 3.66
2007 CHC 3.94

Post-All Star Break ERA
2007 OAK 4.71 (+29%)
2007 CHC 4.31 (+ 9%)

Steve Shasta, Saturday, 18 August 2007 22:41 (seventeen years ago)

Those lines makes me think that Jason Kendall should never have played in the AL.

Alex in SF, Sunday, 19 August 2007 07:20 (seventeen years ago)

Have I mentioned how much I love Jack Cust?

Alex in SF, Wednesday, 22 August 2007 18:20 (seventeen years ago)

Is Cust eligible for ROY? He's not had many ABs before this year. I forget how the criteria works.

Alex in SF, Wednesday, 22 August 2007 18:21 (seventeen years ago)

Oh nevermind its 130 ABs. He definitely had that many.

Alex in SF, Wednesday, 22 August 2007 18:37 (seventeen years ago)

Loaiza claimed off waivers, goes to the Dodgers.

Steve Shasta, Wednesday, 29 August 2007 22:08 (seventeen years ago)

Tell 'em how no player is going back to the A's, but that the Blue Horde are on tab for the remainder of Loaiza's contract.

Leee, Wednesday, 29 August 2007 22:10 (seventeen years ago)

one year passes...

The Rich Harden trade is looking HUGE for the Cubs (if not the fate of all Western civilization) now.

felicity, Friday, 3 October 2008 21:15 (sixteen years ago)

Harden performed very well down the stretch against insignificant teams such as the Reds, Nationals and Mets (1.35 ERA, 11.25K/9)... but when up against playoff teams like MIL and PHI he seemed to struggle a bit more (1.40 WHIP).

He has won exactly one game in the past 7 weeks.
