um, i'll reserve judgment as to WHAT exactly this is a comment on, but i routinely read much worse baseball-related stuff in allegedly reputable sports and news publications.

j.q higgins, Tuesday, 24 April 2007 15:56 (eighteen years ago)

the ethier thing is pretty cute

"The 18-34 year old woman is notably the most loyal fan."

yeah uh i call bullshit on this

"The way the baseball business is run nowadays, with players coming and going, I wonder how this affects the female baseball fan -- the teenager who is a fan because of the player she worships. Or the teenager who grows up watching Lo Duca in blue for six years. How does the way baseball business is run affect the loyal female fan or the potential female fan? And do you think baseball would have more female fans if there were more franchise players signed to longer contracts?

It’s just a theory . . . what do you think?"

what do i think i think lol retard u just pwned urself

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 22:07 (eighteen years ago)

I had the '88 Topps.

David R., Wednesday, 16 May 2007 00:54 (eighteen years ago)

oh jesus that was the ugliest set that i collected all of

jergïns, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 13:42 (eighteen years ago)

Isn't Nipper there an '87? I remember skinny McGwire from that set.

Andy K, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 13:45 (eighteen years ago)

I must have 40 assorted Tom Gordon rookie cards. Get on my level.

Andy K, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 13:47 (eighteen years ago)

I traded a Griffey rookie card for the rookie cards of stalwarts such as Greg Vaughn, Todd Zeilie, & Eric Anthony.

David R., Wednesday, 16 May 2007 13:51 (eighteen years ago)

And I see jergins revived the ILE thread from about 28 years ago where I told that story.

David R., Wednesday, 16 May 2007 13:53 (eighteen years ago)

i sold 3 roger clemens rookies for U2 tickets. dumb

jergïns, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 13:57 (eighteen years ago)

I traded a Griffey rookie card for the rookie cards of stalwarts such as Greg Vaughn, Todd Zeilie, & Eric Anthony.

I have a '90 Fleer rack pack with Vaughn AND Larry Walker (and someone else) on the front. It must be worth AT LEAST $1.29 by now.

Andy K, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 14:08 (eighteen years ago)

Dude, that might be pushing $1.49!

The late 80s / early 90s had some ugly ass sets:

- every single Topps set between 1987 and 1990
- '90 Donruss
- SCORE
- some Fleer set was buttass, too, but I can't recall the year - some godawful yellow/black scheme; the '89 was rather smart, given the alternatives

David R., Wednesday, 16 May 2007 14:20 (eighteen years ago)

i haven't looked at that Donruss 90 in probably 15 years but i can still remember how ugly it is

jergïns, Thursday, 17 May 2007 09:55 (eighteen years ago)

see, this is the messed up trade thread we should have.

all i can say is that dwight gooden rookie cards provided me w/ a multitude of cool, older cards.

which is 90 donruss?

j.q higgins, Thursday, 17 May 2007 13:34 (eighteen years ago)

It's some Pollockian / pigeon-shat white-on-red w/ pseudo-cursive writing fiasco. And, of course, DIAMOND KINGS. And I swear 25% of the cards where miscut. LIKE THIS.

uh, that's terrible.

j.q higgins, Thursday, 17 May 2007 15:05 (eighteen years ago)

Speaking as a designer I can say with 100% certainty that those are the most hideous cards ever produced right there. Even worse than the '91 Fleer set.

The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Thursday, 17 May 2007 15:13 (eighteen years ago)

Totally.

I think it's a push between the two.

David R., Thursday, 17 May 2007 15:26 (eighteen years ago)

ha @ my spelling of Zeile as "Zeilie".

David R., Thursday, 17 May 2007 15:27 (eighteen years ago)

Well they both have hideous bad-idea-time colour and pointless horizontal lines cluttering their respective layouts. But Donrus '90 wins out due to the overly dominant located (and also ugly) logo, inexplicable bits of what appears to be gravel on the sides and that tragic font they have the players names in.

The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Thursday, 17 May 2007 15:33 (eighteen years ago)

1990 wasn't a good year for Topps, either:

David R., Thursday, 17 May 2007 15:35 (eighteen years ago)

The BACK is what really kicks it up a notch.

David R., Thursday, 17 May 2007 15:36 (eighteen years ago)

I don't even REMEMBER the Fleer '91 designs. I didn't recall my divorce from baseball cards being so severe (since I do remember the '90 sets well).

Andy K, Thursday, 17 May 2007 15:45 (eighteen years ago)

Don't mind the yellowed back so much as it adds that classic card feel to it. sorta.

and with the front they at least went throught the trouble of clipping Juan so you can get some inetraction with the team name and the image.
Donruss? - nope too lazy. image stays in it's box. by itself.

one month passes...

I married my best friend on Aug. 15 and I've truly never been happier. He is a beautiful person and I'm blessed to have found him.

He does have one minor, itsy bitsy, flaw though -- he's a diehard Yankees fan. Ah well, no one's perfect. I've chosen to overlook this because he just makes me so damn happy.

I know what your next question will be. I can hear you think it.

"What if the Yankees play the Dodgers in the World Series?" you ask.

I have no freaking clue. I may have to move back in with my parents for a while. Just writing that last sentence made me giggle. We will cross that bridge when we come to it.

Please accept my apologies for not updating my blog in a while. Between my wedding, honeymoon and being in preproduction for "Romantically Challenged", I have had my hands full of excitement. Oh wait, did I tell you that "Romantically Challenged", was picked up for midseason? It was! This has been an overwhelming year. I am blessed

Anyone who grew up in the '80s has a soft spot for Alyssa Milano. The Who's the Boss star and Dodgers fanatic has a new sitcom, Romantically Challenged, that debuts tonight on ABC at 9:30 pm. ET. Milano recently took time out to answer five quick questions for Hot Clicks Nation.

SI.com: Everyone knows you are a huge Dodgers fan. What's your prediction for the team this year? What is your biggest concern about them?

Milano: I never make baseball season predictions. Truly, anything can happen in baseball because the season is so damn long. I appreciate every game and just ride the wave. For the last few years, my concern has been our starting rotation and the fact we haven't had a true "ace" for quite some time. Other than that, I'm concerned with the McCourt's and the circus their divorce has turned into.

SI.com: Your new show is called Romantically Challenged. Romantically challenged athletes have been in the news a lot lately. What advice would you give Tiger and Elin Woods?

Milano: Ha! I would tell Tiger not to begin messages to mistresses with "Hi. This is Tiger." In my experience, not THAT many men's first names are Tiger. All kidding aside, I'm the wrong person to be giving advice to the romantically challenged. I'm happily married now, but my journey to find my happily ever after was filled with crazy amounts of angst and strike outs (pun intended). Ultimately though, I feel that everyone is on their own path and no one really knows the inner workings of a relationship, but the two people that are in it. I wish them both well and hope they are taking the steps to heal and grow.

SI.com: You have a clothing line of sports apparel for women. Which team (besides the Dodgers) do you think has the coolest uniform in sports? Which team has the ugliest?

Milano: I love the Yankees uni's. In football, I love the New York Giants colors. In basketball, I like the Celtics uniforms. Hockey, the New York Rangers. I tend to gravitate toward the classic uniforms that haven't changed much through the years. The ugliest uniform had to have been the late '70s-early '80s Pirates uniform with the striped cap! The '80s were just not a good era for fashion in general.

SI.com: You're a big Tweeter. What do you like most about Twitter? Is there anything you don't like about it?

Milano: I love that Twitter can be anything the user makes it. I love that it makes me feel like I am a member of a community and that it gives me a platform to use my voice to inspire positive change. There really isn't anything I don't like about Twitter as a service, although, there are times that I don't like how a user chooses to use the service. I have seen numerous accounts that seem to be used solely to spread hurtful or ignorant views. Luckily, there is a "block" button.

SI.com: What do you think Samantha Micelli is doing today?

Milano: Samantha Micelli owns a baseball team. Duh.

Markazi: Before you got married last year the old joke was you had dated quite a pitching staff after going out with Brad Penny, Carl Pavano and Barry Zito. Do you think there was something about pitchers you were into or was their position purely a coincidence?

Milano: No, I think they were all very, very different. Going to Dodgers games was my social life and is my social life so I was fortunate enough to meet a lot of the players and since I wasn't meeting men elsewhere I wound up dating a few guys.

Markazi: Does that change how you watch the game at all when you're going out with the player?

Milano: You get an insider's perspective that is cool but also you're much more aware of the struggles the players go through and how hard that job really is after your time in a relationship with them and how stressful their job was. Before that I had this perspective that they're playing a little boy's game. I wish I could play a game for a living and be outside all the time. I couldn't quite wrap my head around how hard the pressure was so I do think I have a different type of appreciation for what they do.

Nope, but that relationship gave me baseball. I think from all my relationships I learn something about myself—and about humanity—and my Love of baseball was one thing that I learned there. And, also, that just because you're 6-foot-5 and 260 pounds, it doesn't mean you're big all over.
