Predicting Twins, rooting Twins.

In "Bob" There Is No East or West (WmC), Tuesday, 5 October 2010 19:59 (fifteen years ago)

I like the Twins but no Morneau = no bueno. Yankees have stockpiled too many greedy all-stars who despite their countless character flaws, are still able to mash.

NYY in 5.

Fartbritz Sootzveti (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 5 October 2010 20:12 (fifteen years ago)

plz plz plz PLZ Twins

THE CHOMPING DUCK GETS HIS FATTY OUT FOR VADAR (HI DERE), Tuesday, 5 October 2010 20:12 (fifteen years ago)

Obviously the Twins would have a better chance with Morneau, but their run production didn't decrease with his absence.

Andy K, Tuesday, 5 October 2010 20:16 (fifteen years ago)

“I don’t see what you guys are saying about the uncertainty,” Sabathia said when asked if he felt more pressure to perform given the Yankees’ rotation struggles over the last two months. “Andy Pettitte is the best pitcher in the playoffs in the history of baseball. So I think our rotation stacks up pretty good against anybody.”

CC must listen to Karl Ravech a lot.

The Minnesota Twins have chosen right-hander Scott Baker over righty Kevin Slowey for the final spot in the bullpen for the AL Division Series against the New York Yankees.

Ben Lindbergh (6:20:08 PM PT): Wonder how bad Jeter'd have to have been not to hit at the top of the order in a playoff game.

Marc Normandin (6:21:03 PM PT): He would have to be dead, Ben. And even then, if they could prop him up they might still try it.

From friend's Facebook feed: "Why is the pitcher for the Yankees wearing jodphurs????"

Eric H., Thursday, 7 October 2010 02:03 (fifteen years ago)

Steven Goldman:

I can never let go of the fact that the Mets didn't protect Tom Seaver after '83 because they wanted to leave room for Ron Gardenhire on the roster.
If not for that decision, the Mets not only go to the postseason in 1986, but '84 and '85 as well.

kind of shrill and very self-righteous (Dr Morbius), Friday, 8 October 2010 00:57 (fifteen years ago)

Every time these teams meet in the playoffs, the Yanks seem to efficiently go about their business and take advantage of every little opening, and the Twins pretty much choke. At least Joe Nathan isn't around to blow saves this year.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Friday, 8 October 2010 01:05 (fifteen years ago)

Who closes for the twins anyway? Capps? Fuentes?

let's go rangers

truly blunted rhyme fiend (J0rdan S.), Friday, 8 October 2010 01:09 (fifteen years ago)

either way theyre going out like bitches

That seems a bit harsh. It's not like they were favored. They've lost two games by a total of five runs and the Yankees have used Rivera in both of them.

The Rays, however...

Andy K, Friday, 8 October 2010 01:18 (fifteen years ago)

A Rod said that the Yankees are David and the Twins are Goliath, so clearly this is a huge upset.

Fartbritz Sootzveti (Steve Shasta), Friday, 8 October 2010 04:38 (fifteen years ago)

The Berkman pitch was one of 31 wrong calls from Wendelstedt. Thirteen other times he called a ball on a pitch inside the strike zone, one of them on a cutter to Derek Jeter(notes) that literally was in the center of the strike zone, at the belt, halving the plate. And 17 times – most of them actually benefitting Pavano – Wendelstedt called a strike on a pitch outside the zone.

because the playoffs are completely random

call all destroyer, Sunday, 10 October 2010 05:41 (fifteen years ago)

It's not completely random that every time these teams face off, the Twins get exposed as a team without a true ace pitcher, a deep power threat for scoring runs in bunches, or a closer that can do his job properly. The Yanks' run differential was also 50 runs better than the Twins' even though they were separated by just a game in overall W-L record. And the Twins put together their 2nd half run mainly at the expense of crappy Central Division teams (47-25 vs the Central), but were just 15-21 vs the East. The Yankees were 23-13 vs the Central and 38-34 vs the East. (even the Orioles nearly had a better record vs the Central than any Central team had vs the East)

NoTimeBeforeTime, Sunday, 10 October 2010 06:56 (fifteen years ago)

in none of these years have the Twins had the better team.

kind of shrill and very self-righteous (Dr Morbius), Sunday, 10 October 2010 09:44 (fifteen years ago)

I had talked myself into thinking that the Yankees' rotation was falling apart and that their record over the past couple of months was more indicative of their talent level heading into the series than their overall record. But in the end all their starters pitched well.

The 2004 Twins weren't better than the 2004 Yankees, but they definitely had a better front three and that's most of what you need to win a best-of-five series. The Red Sox showed that year that it doesn't matter if the Yanks spend 200M on hitters if you can stretch out the series and make them rely on the likes of Javy Vasquez (deja vu!!) and a washed-up Kevin Brown to pitch them through trouble.
