James did something very similar in the first three Baseball Books (the annuals that replaced the Abstracts in the early '90s). It was called The Biographic Encyclopedia of Baseball, and the entries were written by James, Mike Kopf, and Rob Neyer. They got as far as George Baker, who played for the St. Louis Maroons in the 1880s (and did "Little Green Bag" about a hundred years later).
